Solid Home Assistant
This Echo Dot gets the job done. I have this and other Alexa devices in my home in order to control the smart technology I’ve installed, specifically smart lighting. It recognizes my voice most of the time and processes my requests quickly. This is the Echo for my bedroom, so I appreciate the easy to see and read clock. I don’t love all of the notification settings that it has as the default and I’m still figuring out how to make it stop suggesting things to me, but overall it is a must have for smart home control!

A Smart Clock that gets hard of hearing with age
I have had this Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) with clock for about a year and a half. I like that the clock numbers adjust the brightness depending on the light in the bedroom. It recognizes my voice very well and has a great clear sound. However, just recently voice recognition has become intermittent. Turning off power and reapplying it usually fixes this but it is only temporary.

Do Not Buy……Edit:July 21, 2024
I purchased my Echo 5th Generation with Clock to replace the 4th Generation that wouldn’t remain connected to my internet. I purchased this Echo device on December 27, 2023. Less then 7 months (July 8, 2024) this device suddenly started doing the exact same thing. I have tried doing a complete factory reset and it stays connected for a few hours only to be completely unresponsive. I am done buying Amazon’s Echo products. I still have three other, much older, models that are still working after many years. But the last two generations have been a complete waste of my hard earned money. Never AgainEdit: I have changed the 1 Star Review to a 3 Star Review. As suddenly as this device started malfunctioning it, surprisingly, started working properly. After leaving it unplugged for over 24 hours, I powered it back up. I then performed another hard reset and asked Alexa if there were any new updates. After about 20 seconds of spinning, blue light activity she responded that there were no new updates. This was about two weeks ago and, so far, there have been no issues…so maybe there was an update that wasn’t acknowledged. I still don’t trust it. I have reconnected my old analog radio/alarm clock and set it for those occasions when I absolutely have to get up. I’m still disappointed in this product and will likely not replace this with another Echo device.

I always had an old school alarm clock and was not happy with the last one I had. I already had two echo dots (one in my kitchen and one in my office) and decided to give this a try in my bedroom. I love how it is not bright all the time. I programmed my alarm to my favorite music and love it!

Replaced my 20 year old alarm clock
Ok it actually replaces the alarm clock my husband already owned 21 years ago, which was a gift to himself – a bose with a cd player. Over the years we gave up on choosing cds so its been teh same cd for the alarm for a decade, which he complained about but was not willing to choose a cd. Meanwhile it got harder and harder to see the time – not sure if my eyes got older or if the leds started to die. but it got to the point where this thing takes up SO much space on my bedside table and is regularly annoying me.I dont have any other amazon alexa items. I just was getting used to google assistant on my pixel. But this little speaker was super easy to set up. I only have the free amazon prime music with my prime account, but I was able to tell the dot to set an alarm for 7 am and play a song by (one of my husband’s favorite artists), and then go into my phone and make it repeat for weekdays. So, i wont have to remember to turn it on and off every friday/sunday. Woot!He didnt seem to appreciate it (grumpy old man) tho he did admit it was easier to wake up to a song he actually likes. and i realized I can listen to NPR while i do any cleaning in my room.We all dont really like noise – we rarely watch a show together and all of us use headphones in public spaces. So i cant imagine getting more of these. But as a replacement for a 21 year old Bose CD alarm clock? I think its a HUGE upgrade! Easier to read by a huge margin, too.Oh and it glowed yellow and i was panicking – that was too bright for sleeping – but all good, it was just telling me my amazon packages were delivered.Now I need to go check out some sleep activities!

We have several Echos & Echo Dots throughout the house, and have given some as gifts.The functionality is as good as any other device by Amazon. I absolutely love the addition of the clock on this device.The sound is on par with the original Echo Dot and the 2nd Generation Dot. There is no comparison regarding the sound to the original Echo, the Echo Plus, or the 4th Generation Echo; just none.I like using the Dots as indoor surround sound in places where it’s nice to have sound, but you don’t need to throw big noise like you can with the fuller sounding Echos with a battery base. (The fact you can group them helps tremendously here for a family gathering or BBQ.)Overall, I am waiting for the clock version to become available again so I can order another one (or two).If the sound was better quality this would be 5 stars for sure!

Super Impressed by the Echo Dot 5
The biggest feature is the smart home assistant feature which I feel was not mentioned properly when considering buying this product. It does everything! I am 66 and needed help turning on and off things because I have about twenty remotes and things got messy and confusing. So I turned to Kasa smart plugs for each device and outlet which are excellent and purchased the Echo Dot 5 so that I could to tell the assistant what to turn off and on. I was able to change her wake up name to Echo which was a huge plus. The other alternative was Amazon, and of course Alexa but for me the name Echo was perfect. I have it tell me the weather or if there are any Amazon deliveries scheduled, turn on the news, tell me a joke, play music, sing to me or just about anything you could ask. When I am waking up in bed, I tell Echo to make coffee, turns on the coffee pot for 8 minutes and then shuts it off automatically and say’s “Your Coffee is Ready”. I also have it remind me to take out the garbage every Saturday at 4pm. I also have it remind me on the fly. For instance I will say remind me in 5 minutes that I have a chore to do and she says it without programming it in. Although It is easy to set up routines in the settings on your Alexa App on your phone. Best fifty dollar investment ever.

We purchased two Echo Dots – one for each son’s bedroom. I love the simple, modern look. They don’t take up much space at all, which I really like. It was also convenient that different colors are available. We have one white and one blue which makes it easier to tell which device is associated with which room/person.Now that they are up and running and we have been using them for about 6 months, here are my thoughts:- The initial setup was a bit more cumbersome than I expected. It’s not as easy to associate a person/account with a device as I would have hoped.- Once the Dots were set up, I found the devices and the app are pretty easy to use.- Our boys primarily use the Dots as a clock, an alarm, and for checking the weather.- I primarily use the Dots to check/manage their alarms, and to “drop in” when I need to ask a quick question or tell them dinner is ready.My favorite feature is the drop-in, and I will explain why:Our younger son is on the autism spectrum. He has a tablet, but does not have a cell phone. On one particular day, he was home alone for a couple hours (which he is very capable of). I wanted to check in on him so I tried to call him on his tablet. What I did not know is that he had shut off the ringer and was not in the room with it. I was a little worried, so I was going to call our neighbor to check on him. But then I remembered the Dot. Not only was I able to Drop In to his room to call him, but I could also control the volume of the device! 🙂 I turned the Dot up to full volume and called his name and told him I wanted him to call me on his tablet. He heard me, got his tablet, and called me right away!! Having this piece of mind is priceless!!We are happy to have them today, and look forward to trying out new features as time goes on!

Needs reboot everyday
Bought my Echo dot in July 2023. For a year, I would have given it a 5 star review, now it’s a 50 dollar paperweight. There is a software issue with the dot that is referenced in MANY online posts – “Echo dot needs rebooting every day”. Mine disconnects sometimes twice a day. Rebooting makes it functional, but then it disconnects. Shame on Amazon for not addressing this known issue.Edit: I changed my rating from 1 to 5 stars!After an extensive web search and re-reading many, many posts regarding the need to frequently reboot the Echo Dot, I came across this little gem. My Dot updated from software version #10369675140 (old) to#10369675652 (new) and problem is FIXED! It updated automatically! I don’t know if you can update via the Alexa app or online via connected devices, but, updating to the newest software version fixes the problem. Thnx Amazon

Love it!
I love that I can add so many different alarm programs. So easy to do. I use it to control my smart bulbs in the lamps around my house. Love the size, color, shape. My favorite feature is the auto-dim function when the lights are off, so it doesn’t light up my whole room, when I’m trying to sleep.

EDIT: PROPS TO AMAZON FOR CATCHING THE GLITCH AND GETTING THINGS FIXED, AS MANY INDIVIDUALS WERE STRUGGLING TO GET THEIR SPEAKER TO WORK IN LATE JUNE AND EARLY JULY 2024. ITS ALL GOOD AGAIN:)Presently in the dark all of my lights are set up to this Alexa and she’s not listening :/I really enjoyed having this particular echo with Clock display and slowly shifted my home into an Alexa friendly place. Then starting in late June/early July 2024, it just stopped responding. Others have said they can unplug and replug and it’s all good for the next 24 hours, but mine will only respond to the first time. I’ve also tried disconnecting my account and setting it up again. Same results. It’s basically a dud now

Started having issues after 3 months
I’ve had several “Alexas” over the years and never had an issue. I “updated” a small OG Alexa with this one in March. Worked just fine until the last few weeks – loses connection, just stops working intermittently, and I have to reset it. This morning I realized it just completely stopped working about 8:10 AM (apparently) – it was actually 10:35 AM. Hate to think what would have happened if I’d had an alarm set. Reset it once again and, as far as I know, it’s working like it should. I’m tired of not being able to rely on it working correctly.Of course, there is only a 30-day return window. I’ll check to see if there is some kind of warranty — Amazon makes it so difficult to find out that information and/or easily connect with a real live person.

Best Alarm Clock Ever
This is so much more than an alarm clock. From being able to listen to music, control all smart devices in your house and set alarms. This mighty yet little device is awesome! If you have multiple of them you can even use them as an intercom device throughout your house.

nice enough to replace…
I have been pleased with my Dot since I bought it in Oct 2023. The sound is good and it’s handy to have the clock, plus I like seeing the scroll with song info when I play American Top 40 on Sirius (the 70s had MY music!).I am disappointed that my Dot is acting up now, of course after the 6 month warranty has expired. It more and more frequently responds appropriately to my requests but then – silence. No music. Then today its clock was totally wrong. It gets its act together after I unplug and re-plug but I shouldn’t have to do that.I am going to get another one with the hope that this one was the exception, not the rule.

Almost perfect but still room for improvement
I’ve been using my echo-dot for 7 months already. Until 2 weeks ago its functionality was great. Then it started getting “stuck” on yellow-ring mode and Alexa would not respond. Device said there was no wi-fi connection (not true). I had to unplug it (still no resolve) and after several re-starting attempts, the issue got solved for a day. Until it went back to freeze-mode. That’s why I’m only giving it 4 Stars. Other than that it’s a great device to have. Clear music sound, awesome features, good value for money.

Doesn’t know the answer, most times
Also, I’ve owned this particular model for less than 2 years… And now it just doesn’t do anything. I have to unplug it and replug it in every day. When I set the alarm she takes the instruction, the display dot for alarm shows, but I never get notification of the alarm.This morning, I awoke 1 hour late and the blue light was spinning, nothing else going on. When I gave the command to stop, nothing. I had to unplug it again.Doesn’t bode well for getting another. More than likely I’ll go to Google home devices.

Great for programming things around the house! But a few adjustments would be nice.
I have several Amazon Alexas. This one was a need for the new house, so that I had a speaker in one of the new rooms. I use the The echo for things like: Turning on or off the lights, playing music, weather, and the clock face on the front. The devices is a helpful little thing to have around. it can run routine (So It can turn of lights after you’ve left your house, start or stop music for kids or pets, all on a timer. And can make simple tasks simpler. It does have a mute button as well (So it stops listening to you) Which is nice, too.The only complaints I have about the alexa device is:-It’s biased. I don’t know what I was expecting from an amazon product. If I needed to know where I can watch a specific movie, the alexa will tell me “For rent on Amazon for 3.99 or purchase for 14.99” When What I wanted was a list of places. I ask google the same question and id get a much less biased response. “Disney plus, Youtube, Vudu, Amazon prime, Google play movies” Etc. That’s what I wanted to know.-Alexa pops in on convos: These devices are a little tricky and only let you name them of a select few options. So if you talk about Computers a lot and you name your device computer, it will pick up on it. Same with Alexa, and echo. Sometimes, the device recognizes the conversation was not for it and will simply disregard the command. and sometimes it will pick up on what you said and assume you asked something. In which your conversation will be interrupted by “Bob ross was born on October 29th, 1942 -” (We weren’t even talking about bob ross which was pretty funny XD) Not gonna lie, it can be fun. but it can also be inconvenient.-Echo does not call 911.Which I thought would be kind of a cool option incase you got in some issue and needed help, where you couldn’t reach a phone yourself. (Im not elderly and struggle some with this issue, but I thought it was kinda sucky that it couldn’t do that.) It can call contacts and your own phone though! So if you need to find your phone and you have it programmed to, you can say “Alexa, find my phone” And it’ll call you.

Update 3/10/2024 – Item is being returned even after doing a factory reset it would not continue to play Amazon Music without constant interruptions. However, I do want to call out the Tech Support person Vijay who spent quite a bit of time assisting via a chat. Very patient and helpful. Thank you!Update 3/8/2024 – I would not purchase this item again nor any of the Amazon devices based on the issues with this item and the poor technical support I’ve received thus far. I’ve moved it to 4 different places in my home, rebooted it & my home network. It continues to randomly turn off when playing Amazon Music. I’m not having issues with any other device and do not have many devices running. I’ve asked for it to turn off after a certain number of hours and also, as tech support suggested, even asked to play in an endless loop (which as I told them made no sense). Also ensured my Alexa software is updated. Seems this is a known issue with this item. I’m going to do a factory reset which is all that’s left other than returning it…..which will be the first time I’ve had to return anything I’ve ordered. I hope the return process is easier than this has been.Update 2/11 – This Echo still does not continue playing music as expected. I can give a turn off command of a XX hours and it will turn off way before then. I’ve restarted it, moved it, etc and still continues to be problematic. It can not be my network as this is the only device I have an issue with.This is the first Echo product I’ve purchased. and I must admit the sound from this is very nice. My primary use of it is to play music and it sounds excellent. I am having a problem with the music shutting off. No rhyme nor reason nor specific amount of time. I’ve just tested it to see if i can give a turn off time “Alexa turn music off at XXXX time” so see if that helps. I have no issues with my WiFi and have very few devices running so can’t be the issue. Lastly and most importantly, my dog is afraid of the Alexa voice coming from the Echo. I’ve tried to acclimate her slowly and introduce her to the sound of it (with the music) without her hearing Alexa voice. She does ok until she hears Alexa voice and she’s still afraid of it. I have to be cognizant of her whereabouts when using it. I’ve read about other dogs being afraid – not sure if it’s frequency or Alexa voice.

I bought this Alexa dot for my daughter as a Christmas gift. It worked fine for about 2 months and then it randomly stopped working. We have tried resetting it multiple times. We have tried doing updates to it but there are none. Once we get it resetted it it will work for about 5 to 10 minutes and then it goes on froze again. I would like to have this item replaced or I would like a total refund. I have no problem sending the product back so you can see exactly what it’s going on with it. I hope to be hearing from someone soon because I have one upset daughter.

LOVE this ALEXA-Great for Kids
So I bought my one son this ALEXA because he wanted a clock in his room, but he also needed a new Alexa. So this killed two birds with one stone! It is a great speaker and picks up your voice with ease! It takes up hardly any room and the clock is very visible anywhere in his room you are standing. He loves it. Soooo my other son also loved it so much that he talked me into buying him one too! Now we are the proud owners of two! Highly recommend!

Great until it’s not
Bought this at the very end of November 2023. 5th gen. Needed the clock so as a present for hubby bought it for him as surprise. Even though it was preset to our system (Eero router, etc., Echo Show, plus security system), it hooked up and then immediately unhooked. Couldn’t get it to rehook to the system, nor would it change time zones. One problem after another. Starting after the first of the year, starting having all kinds of problems with it. I’m told my warranty – remember I ordered and received it 11/30/23 – expired March 4, 2024. That’s your warranty. I started in April trying to get it to continue being what it said it was – a WiFi extender – to work again. Nope, it would not. 45 days later, after many, many emails with tech support, many, many calls to Amazon, they decided to “make an exception” and send me a replacement which was refurbished. One rep told me I was getting a refurbished device because it wasn’t coming from the warehouse and he was positive of that. I not only received a refurbished device but it was the 4th generation, not the 5th generation that I had. It did the same issues as my original one but wouldn’t even stay connected to my system. I was told to keep that unit and reorder another device and send it back (my original one) and they would credit me. The device I had bought when they had their Thanksgiving sale so this device is $20.00 more -lugs the one to keep the 4th gen that wouldn’t work, of course was shipped without a cord and I still had the problem of Amazon charging me if I didn’t send my original back within 30 days because they had sent me a non-working device that wasn’t even equivalent to what I had. So now I’m out $59.00, more dollars, have two defective units, one completely unworkable, even tech support could not get it to work – the original – so if you want a device that has a 60 day warranty and a hope that it continues to work, then by all means purchase this unit. There is a reason, Amazon had only refurbished units for sale for a while. Plus CSR only offered a 15% discount for a new one, and the website had a 20% trade in, that I tried to use when I broke down and ordered a new one, but when I selected that offer/option, it only pulled up a blank screen and went no further. All my other devices were working fine. This one never did. One of the most disappointing and frustrating experiences I have ever had with Amazon, and I have spent thousands of dollars with them and have their credit card to be treated the way they have with this device. So buyer beware. Let’s hope yours works. By the way, I purchased the extended warranty this time, for what good it will get me. Good luck! Works til it doesn’t.Update – ordered another new Echo Dot with clock. Also ordered another WiFi extender from Ring that matches my mesh system. Before I installed the new extender, (because it was suggested), Brian with Tech Support called as promised and got all of it back up to running. It seems my system between the two different platforms (needed) had some “garbage” in my connection that needed to be resolved. Simple restart was required and all was as it should be. After installing the new extender near the new Echo Dot with clock, the internet extender function on my new Dot was no longer needed so the larger extender disabled automatically the WiFi extender on the Dot. It also sent and posted the reason why it had disabled the WiFi extender capabilities and if I moved it further away the capabilities of WiFi extender would/could be enabled again. All in all, both of my Echo Dots with Clock are back up and working correctly and seamlessly again. Love it all over again.

Nifty Gizmo, Tricky Set-up, but Still a Bug
I am a longtime internet radio listener. Suddenly, and without warning (for me), Logitech recently pulled the plug on their servers after 10 years and instantly obsoleted the three internet radios I had around the house. I decided on Echo Dots as probably being the best solution to replace the radios.And indeed that is the case. Like my radios, with TuneIn on the Dots I can access just about any genre of audio format programming from around the world with a simple “Alexa play…”Sonically, these little guys are quite impressive given their size. They’re not going to fill a room with concert-hall-quality sound but that’s not what they’re primarily designed to do.As for Alexa integration and set up, I did not find that to be as easy as Amazon suggests. The Dots come with minimalist setup instructions that basically say download the app, plug in the Dot, and follow the prompts. However, my router is partitioned into Primary, Internet of Things, and Guest. I wanted to install the Dots on my IoT. But an option was never given to select the partition I wanted. Apparently the Dots were going to install on whatever network the tablet was on that I was using for setup. It took me a while to work through what to do in order to get them installed as I wanted.There were also other problems that needed to be solved through trial and error that required some googling to figure out. Eventually the first Dot sprung to life but I still don’t really have a good grip on what I did to make that happen. Luckily, once the first Dot was installed, the other two were essentially PnP. But the whole process took hours, not minutes, along with a fair amount of anxiety and uncertainty about what I was doing. NOT.SO.SIMPLE.I also don’t find the Alexa app to be very user friendly. It’s not at all intuitive and takes a fair amount of internet searching just to find out what you can do with the Dots let alone make it happen.Finally, no one should ever forget that in days of yore, government agents would either have to sneak into your home or get court orders to place a bug. The old East German Stasi would never have believed that people would willingly bug themselves like this. These smart speakers are listening devices you are voluntarily putting in your home or office that listen to everything you say, presumably just waiting for the magic word “Alexa” before they start processing the information you provide. As paranoid as it may sound, it doesn’t take too much imagination for how these devices could be employed or hacked to violate someone’s personal privacy in some places around the world now or in the future.Fortunately, the Dots have a prominent button to turn off the microphone so you can lower the Cone of Silence when necessary (assuming you really want to believe that the mic couldn’t be turned back on by a determined foe). The problem, however, is that these Dots are so small and unobtrusive that they just fade into the background, out of sight and out of mind. You forget they’re there and listening!
