Great machine – if you know its limit
If you know the difference between an x64 machine and ARM64 machine, and what your work flow focuses in Microsoft Office, web based programs or some non-resources intensive programs, Surface Pro X is an excellent choice: Great screen, lightweight (even with keyboard covers on), good typing experience, and LTE always-on connectivity

Not all windows applications will work on this PC
Guess I should have read the fine print! You would think that a product from Microsoft, running Windows 10, would run any windows application that can run on Windows 10. This NOT the case. I can’t print to my office printers and there are several applications that will not install because they are not compatible with the Microsoft SQ1 ARM based processor in the Surface Pro X. Other than that I like the portability and other features but not being able to run the applications I need is a fatal flaw. I would have done more research but this is a top dollar computer from Microsoft not some vendor that you have never seen before.

Product crashed after very little use
I bought this for my wife after I thought the surface had gotten over its earlier years of product failures but this one crashed in about 45 days with little use. I have tracked the refund back to Kentucky facility on Thursday June 25th and I am awaiting my refund. Piece of junk cost me $180. Due to its failure and was charged restocking fee of $180 for a piece of junk that crashed. Will stick to Apple products from now on and restrict what I buy from Amazon from now on. Manufacturer’s warranty should have covered it. Typical Microsoft blue screen of death!

Impractical and incompatible. Only Surface I ever returned.
I’ve used Surface computers for a long time and this is the only one I ever disliked and ever returned. I do not recommend this computer and suggest you buy the Surface Pro 7 instead. This computer is basically a $1,300 Chrombook. It has “Pro” in the name but there’s nothing professional about this computer. You can’t use any of your peripherals with it, and you probably can’t run all of your software on it. The only things you can do with this machine for sure are browse the web and office, and you’ll do it all slower than if you bought a Surface Pro. Beyond that everything is a crapshoot. None – literally none – of the software I use will work on this machine. I contacted the developers of a bunch of the software I use and they all said they have no plans to support it. Only a subset of Windows software will run on this computer, and only a subset of that subset will run at full speed. Most things you’ll use – including Office to a degree – use an emulation layer that runs about 2x as slow and increases battery usage. The software problems are bad enough but the design of this machine is also terrible. The bezels are phone sized instead of tablet sized so you will always have your hand covering part of the screen. It will also sometimes get confused and sense your hands holding the screen and click things you didn’t want to click. The design is almost unusable as a tablet. The Signature Type Cover with the pen holder has a super thick bulge, so this “super thin” tablet is actually more thick than a Surface Pro when you count the case. You can’t plug in headphones – so if you like lossless audio or are a musician you are out of luck. You can’t use regular USB devices so hopefully you don’t want to hook anything up. Both of those can be accomplished with dongles, which are sold separately, and you’ll lose, and are goofy as heck and not “pro.” The problems go on.If I had to sum it all up I’d describe this machine as one that sabotages itself. Every single thing this machine claims is a feature it negated by a problem. Its a tablet you can’t hold. Its a laptop you can’t run your software on. Its a “pro” machine you can’t hook anything up to or install any pro software on. Its got amazing performance and battery life except when it runs any apps and then it is slower and uses more battery. If you are considering this machine think very carefully. Make sure your software will work. Only buy this PC if your usage is limited to what comes with Win 10 and browsing. And if you only want to use it as a laptop. But, then you’d have to ask – why spend so much money on this machine when you could browse the web and use email on any laptop? And if you want to do any real work or creating on this PC – what the Surface line was built for and what Pro in the name implies – this machine wont work for you. In closing, this is a machine with all of the drawbacks of the iPad (too thin, no thumb sized bezels, no desktop software, no ports) but with none of its up sides – you wont find a store filled with millions of apps that do what you want.

surface pro x
it’s not a 64 bit machine, so this will be a big issue, can’t run Photoshop, its not worth the money. It will need to come with all the attachments, keyboard, pen, and whatever needed to use with the USB port other wise you will be nickeled to death for the cost in accessories. The only attraction is the LTE 4G, otherwise it’s another RT computer. We will have to wait a year or two for software to ketch up.

It Works Well for Me, and Probably a Few Other People Too
—October 2022 Update—I’m still using the Surface Pro X as my primary computer. Using it all this time has clarified to me both the OKness of this device and it’s mediocrity. First it’s OKness. Windows 11 was a huge leap over Windows 10 in this computer’s usability, and has new Windows updates have rolled in, it’s only become better and operates smoother. Most of the freezing on login, fits of sudden death, and other random errors have gone away. It’s really quite OK and gets work done.Regarding it’s mediocrity, it’s not particularly great at anything except being thin. Graphical elements such as the taskbar often glitch with all the buttons being shifted over to the right side, and Microsoft Word has a weird case of flashing and vibrating when I open the app. Facial recognition login is still slow, and Adobe Creative Cloud apps still haven’t come to Windows on ARM.I expected to be able to use the Surface Pro X as my iPad replacement, using it primarily through touch, reading ebooks, long battery life, etc.. However, as that hasn’t happened (windows still doesn’t feel like it’s made to be used through touch, there’s no Kindle app, and the battery life isn’t very good), I wonder what place for a device like this is. Since I use the Surface Pro X only as a computer, I think a regular old laptop would have served me better. Especially now that numerous 11th and 12th generation Intel i5 laptops have cellular (one of my requirements), the Surface Pro X feels underwhelming. I still have high hopes for Windows on ARM and plan to keep using my Surface Pro X until the day it dies, but next time I buy a computer, I will probably opt for a Intel laptop with traditional form factor. SQ 1/2/3 isn’t more than OK, and Windows still isn’t made for tablets.—October 2021 Update—The Surface Pro X died. It suddenly had some sort of file system error that totally debilitated the device. Customer support was responsive and wanted me to do a restore that involved UEFI. This process required another computer. Since I didn’t have another computer to complete Customer Support’s instructions, they quickly replaced the Surface Pro X at no cost to me minus time spent trying to resolve the problem. Apparently the device is subject to failure, but Microsoft has good service and warranties.By this point, it’s somewhat painful to switch back and forth between my iPad Pro and Surface Pro X. The iPad operates much, much more smoothly. If the Macbook air had LTE/5G or the iPad could run desktop apps and allowed for dual monitors, I’d switch in a heartbeat.—August 2021 Update—After using the Surface Pro X for two months, my initial review stands, but I’m slightly more optimistic. While it’s still not a perfect laptop or desktop replacement for some people, Windows 11 has given us a better look at the potential of ARM. Windows 11 beautifully emulates 64 bit apps. For me, this means that I can now perfectly run Presonus Studio One, allowing me to record and edit podcasts. This was impossible with Windows 10 for ARM.The Surface Pro X is still glitchy and imperfect, but I still have no regrets for buying it, and software updates are only making it better.—June 2021—Two reference points shape my perspective on the Surface Pro X:1) For work and my personal use, I have Windows 10 desktop computers.2) I own and use an iPad Pro.After using the Surface Pro X for about two months, I can confidently say that, though it is Windows, it lacks as a desktop computer, and, as a tablet, it lacks as a tablet. However, it creates a peculiar intersection between desktop computer and tablet and offers a unique set of functionality that, for my purposes, makes this a decent device, and I have no regrets for buying it.Pros:- Aesthetics: It is slimmer than my iPad with a back cover and a smart keyboard.- Speed: When opening apps such as Microsoft Office and Excel, it acts quickly. When using it as I do, the device doesn’t lag.- Desktop: Being Windows, this device is file centric rather than app centric. I can access all my OneDrive files through File Explorer.Cons:- It doesn’t perfectly emulate all legacy apps.- It doesn’t run most of Adobe Creative Cloud apps such as InDesign and Illustrator.- The processing power is less than that of most of its competitors: Apple M1, Intel, and AMD.- The price per processing power is terrible. For most people a Surface Pro 7, iPad Pro, MacBook Air, or some other Windows laptop will offer better performance for money spent.- As a tablet, navigation is clumsy. Windows 10 isn’t made for touchscreens, at least not in the iPad sense. I usually end up using the Surface Pro X with a mouse and keyboard.Pleasant Surprises:- Emulation of some legacy apps works quite well. Zotero, a 32 bit citation manager, runs beautifully. Log Me In remote desktop software, also 32 bit legacy app, works perfectly, allowing me to access my computer at work from home.- For normal use, the Surface Pro X feels no more sluggish than my specced out workstation.Honestly, if cellular connectivity was not important to me, I would have bought something other than the Surface Pro X. I don’t have cable internet where I live, so I rely upon T-Mobile’s tablet plan. The Surface Pro X is one of the few computers that has both a full, windowed desktop (unlike iPad), and cellular connectivity (unlike most windows laptops). For an additional $15 on my cell phone plan, I get unlimited internet beamed directly to my Surface with speeds at about 45 mbps. This is a must have for me.If the MacBook air had cellular connectivity, I likely would have bought that instead. If a Windows laptop with a late version processor had cellular connectivity and cost less than a fortune, I likely would have bought that instead. As it is, the Surface Pro X has a unique set of connectivity and functionality that makes it work for me while also being an aesthetically pleasing device. For most people, this probably isn’t the device you want. However, in some applications, this is precisely the device one needs.

Stunning design and battery life, kills iPad pro in all aspects
I got my Surface Pro X from Windows Store and I am beyond imoressed. It’s always on so it starts the second I open it. The battery life is insane it just keeps on going for two days without a problem. Comparing it to my surface pro 6 with Intel i5 this thing is super faster. Some apps are not working but emulation is on point. It’s super cool to be able to connect two 4k monitors without noticing a difference in performance. I just read that Microsoft is working on 64bit app emulation which should close the gap completely. I am in love with the new firm factor. Can’t wait for more from Surface. My kids each one just like mine. I’ll be broke for Christmas 😭

This thing is not compatible with many programs. Dropbox, Techsmith, Brother printer, RingCentral, etc. We’ve had to change how we utilize our everyday programs because of these computers. I was really disappointed and surprised at that because of this being a Microsoft product.

Nice battery life and east to use once you get used to it.
Great computer, but takes some getting use to the dual interface between tablet and pc. Doesnt come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, nor do the attachments unless you purchase the single attachment specifically for the 3.5mm jack.

Beautifully designed, not very practical
Good looking hardware, competent internals but the software compatibility is an issue.I planned to use as a travel/work laptop but SO MANY programs are not compatible with the mobile chip. Excellent IF fills your needs for a convertible
Before anything, I must state that if you are looking for a laptop with full PC functionality, better look elsewhere. This thing is for portability, always connected and for being used as a tablet if you need a tablet on a regular basis.I won’t got into ARM processor and such, since I am not a hardware/software techie and there is a lot of info on the internet about it, I am reviewing this strictly under a user perspective and under my specific needs. I also won’t go into comparing it with Apple products since I prefer Windows (just in case, I am not implying that Windows is better than iOS). I will indeed compare it somehow with the Surface Pro 7 which I owned.Since I NEED a convertible because I need a tablet also, and I don’t do photo editing or play games, but instead I use it for MS Office tasks, internet browsing, JW apps, Zoom meetings and playing videos, I consider this a pretty good machine to own.Yes, it is expensive (although I bought it while Microsoft threw a discount on it) for what it sounds like, but I still find reasons to buy it again if this one gets lost or damaged. As a tablet is so much comfortable to handle than the Pro 7 because it doesn’t have the 7’s rough edges, this one is rounder and even though they both weight almost the same, the X is a lot more comfortable to handle, specially in portrait mode with one hand.It is really blazing fast on what it can do. It even seems to be faster than the Pro 7 while using the Microsoft Edge browser, and it seems as fast when using Office and others. Speaking about the new Edge browser it is very good now that has adopted a Chrome like using experience. I was a Chrome user and switched happily to Edge with no issues, maybe there could be something that I may be missing (perhaps on a more deep and technical analysis but as I said, I am not a tech guy in those aspects) but I am very happy with the new Edge and how fast it works with the Pro XSure there are a lot more of apps that it can not run but there are a few internet websites that can guide you with that.As far as battery life, while it obviously depends on usage and screen brightness, I think it easily doubles the Pro 7’s (which is by the way very bad), it can stand almost 8 hours of Zoom use before going out of juice. Charging is pretty fast, just 20 min of charging can get you an additional couple hours of battery life. The new pen works excellent, it is more comfortable than the previous one, and the ability to have it store within the keyboard while it also charges is an excellent plus.Keyboard is otherwise similar than the previous Surface line but I do find that the touchpad clicking sound of the X is notably louder and prefer the previous one on this regard.Screen is absolutely beautiful, it can get very bright if need to be used outside in the sun, and the touch is very responsiveThe only thing I need that this machine doesn’t have up to today, is compatibility with a good VPN app such as NordVPN or some of the sort but in the end to me it isn’t a deal breaker. I would have substracted half a star if possible because of this.Maybe it shouldn’t bare the name “Pro” as it may imply that can do tasks that “Pro” machines can do like photo editing, gaming and so, but like I said, if it fills the need you have for portability, it will surely make you happy. If many find “Surface Pro X” as misleading, think of it as “Surface X”.As for the price, as it works on many things like clothes, cars, etc, it will always depend on everyone’s budget but I didn’t find a SIMILAR machine I like with a Windows OS that was cheaper than this one.Being September and that it is almost likely that MS will bring a new line within the next weeks or just a few months, it could be wise to wait if you can until those arrive. It can even mean that you can get a good discount on this one if, again, it fills your needs.Hope this review helps anyone to decide to buy or to pass on this machine

The computer was very easy to set up and I was able to portal my Google Chrome accounts over.
I use the computer for both personal and business use. The ease of being able to set it up was terrific. Installing MS-365 and Quicken was what was most important for me and I had no problems getting those programs installed and operating and importing files over. The only problem I had was installing drivers for a Canon printer, fax, copier and scanner. Since it was an older printer, I had to contact Canon’s customer support to install the printer drivers. Also since this computer has AMR technology, I cannot use the scanner function but I had Canon support help me to set the scanner up to scan to e-mail.

This surface pro x isn’t just an upgraded version of the older surface pros. Make sure you can go without the INTEL processors that have always been in these surface products. :(My employees can’t use dropbox except in the browser. That is 1 of the 3 apps I need to use, we dont need anything fancy, but this product is too basic. No wonder the discounted price. I have to return these and get older version with Intel processors.

Laptop in a Very Premium Tablet Package but Pen and Windows Hello Needs Improvement (A lot)
Overall, I like the product very much (thus 4 stars) but I have to note that along with losing the ARM CPU power game to Apple, Microsoft seems to be way behind in pen and windows hello experience as well.On the positive sides, I’m impressed by the design, thin bezels, screen, the hinge, the feeling of the case, etc. all feels extremely premium nothing short of Ipad Pro.I am happy with the overall performance (despite the noted issues around app compatibility) yet I’m a light user thus probably not the best person to opine. But I can say that when it runs natively, it runs apps smoothly. On things for Microsoft to consider for further improvements are pencil and windows hello. These are quite critical in my daily use of laptop/ tablet and immensely improves my experience wit the product. I appreciate that at the price of an ipad pro (a tablet), Microsoft delivers a laptop but I would at least expect options (even if it comes with a higher price) to be able to match these pen/ face id experience in a windows environment.I think the pen is still way behind apple pencil which feels much more natural to jot down notes. I don’t know whether it’s a technicality or a preference, but auto-correction-like rounding gestures to your notes makes the use of pen unnatural. It might be convenient in creating art but definitely not for note taking. I had Surface Pro 4 where I stopped using the pencil and was hopeful that this issue was now over. Yet it still seems to be the case, albeit it’s a better note taking experience to Surface Pro 4, Ipad still remains to be my primary note taking tool (by far).Windows hello: a mixed experience. Let me start with my ipad experience. Face ID works fluently, to the extent you forget it exists. It just works, no hiccups, no delays, almost immediate, no separate confirmation ask. In Surface, even on this new version not so. Once it confirms your face, it still pops up another confirmation screen whether you would like to use hello to log in to that app. Not that convenient at all.

A great replacement if you’ve damaged your previous device
After seeing the previous review saying they had received a used device I was a little skeptical at this price point, but I can say that I’ve received what appears to be a new device with no scratches, in the original shrink wrap and packaging. Maybe that person received a used version by mistake.HOWEVER: The device seems to have shipped with Windows 11 installed, but I’m not sure if that’s because that’s how Microsoft ships them now, or if somebody had opened the box, upgraded the software, and then re-shrink-wrapped it. The charger also has the new Windows 11 sticker on it. AND When I registered the device for the warranty, it’s set to expire next February rather than next March, so take that as you may.Regardless, it beats paying $500 and waiting for Microsoft to send a refurbished version or paying an extra $1k to get a new Pro 9, which is a little too much for my use case of using office and web browsing. Overall, it seems like the device is brand new, and every where else is still retailing it for $800. If the 8gb Pro X still fits your use case, this is the best way to buy a new one.

Pleasently Surprised (Positive)
This tablet is probably going to be best suited for someone who is patient, isn’t going to be utilizing graphics heavy programs such as adobe photoshop or any other graphic intense program, and is not performance based. Overall, this tablet is actually pretty awesome. The performance is not nearly as fast as the iPod Pro, but with this product you get a more advanced keyboard with a hidden slot for your pen, a PC-like tablet with a desktop and computer functions, and a sizeable screen (13 inches) for the same price as the 11-inch Pro. Functionality wise, it is pretty good. I can take it outside and work without any issues. It’s very light and portability is easy. It’s sleek, elegant, and smooth. The external appearance is lovely. The camera is decent, but I haven’t tried to take any professional photos so I can’t speak for it entirely. If you are looking for a true 2-in-1 tablet that functions as a computer and also has the ability to transform into a tablet then this is for you. You aren’t going to get the same level of performance as you would with the Apple iPad Pro, but you also aren’t going to get a PC-like feel with the Apple Pro either. If that is something you want, then I highly recommend the Surface Pro X.The processing speed time of this tablet is quite fast except when it is required to process big loads- such as loading the phone tab on Sprint.com which hosts many photos of phones, or going from one page to another on a highly congested page like Burlingtoncoatfactory.com. Otherwise, the processing of Word documents, saving files, doing coursework, or surfing the web casually or for research isn’t going to be an issue. If you want to play a graphic intense game, I would suggest getting an Alienware over this. This tablet is much better suited to professionals and students. I also want to add that this model comes pre-loaded with an LTE slot so you can have cellular functions wherever you go without having to pay additional money, as you would with any of the Apple iPad.Is the tablet worth the price? Well, in my opinion yes. This is the only tablet of it’s kind (to function as a PC & tablet) and there really are no other options besides Apple products but they tend to be more expensive anyway. Either way, I do think this is worth the money and as a Single-mom and full-time student, I am always on the go, always working, and always doing homework and so far this tablet has held up very well and kept up with my busy lifestyle.
