PSA: INSTALL ALL YOUR APPS RIGHT AWAY!

PSA TLDR: Make sure you install ALL apps you want on the stick right away!!!I only installed Hulu, ESPN, Disney+, and Sling. Everything was fine. Until I decided I wanted to install another app a few weeks later. Full storage. What?!? I barely put anything on it…In less than a month, the stick filled up so much storage space (I’m assuming ads, movie/tv trailers) that I couldn’t install crunchyroll. Not enough room for 5 whole streaming apps (132MB being the largest) that did not come native to the stick.Only way to fix was toA: Uninstall what apps I had to make room (which I originally did. Also used ES at this time to check/clear anything in storage i could. You cant. Its inaccessible)B: Factory reset the device.I was hoping it would work and sure enough it did. Factory resetting the device gave me 4.13 GB free space. So now I’m going to install all the apps I need AND a few apps I do not want just in case I need the space down the road I can uninstall those apps.To amazon: Could you please look into a button in your system menu that would free up that inaccessible space… or some other option other than having to Factory reset the device? Thanks!

This one is better than the non-4K Sticks

This one is fast moving fire stick. It is much faster than the older versions I had. However, it is almost filled again. I have about 6-7 apps I use regularly and it comes preloaded with all of its stuff that I will never use and it is almost out of storage room. We got a new one cause the old one was crashing all the time. The new one crashes when using the Apple App. which I know – competition but I don’t want to have to buy Apple TV and a Fire stick so I want the Apple app to not crash on the Fire stick. It can be VERY frustrating. The rest of the apps work ok. I wish there were a way to program in the buttons at the bottom to be the apps I wanted – but again – I know they are working on subscriptions not really on making it most sleek. But it works well except for the Apple app which crashes a lot!

Good Device, Impressed this Apple user

Being an all Apple household I have to say this device impressed me quite a bit. I purchased a Firestick Lite over a year ago to take with me for travel but it had a bit of lag and seemed to have network drop outs on hotel WiFi (I know hotel WiFi is less than desired but it was annoying). In December this device was on sale for over half off and I decided to try it out. This was after I had gotten the previous Firestick 4K which was a decent product but I found out it for whatever reason cannot get the latest software (but the “less capable” Firestick Lite can, baffling I know). I purchased this one and sent back the FireStick 4K as the refund on the Firestick 4K covered the cost of this one and then some.Things that impressed me (with caveats):1. Ability to use captive portal internet. Currently the tvOS on the AppleTV does not allow for this unless you go through a process to spoof the MAC address of a device on the captive portal or somehow get a hold of the internet provider’s help desk to have them add the MAC address. A “dance” I successfully completed once but by the time I was complete it was too late to watch anything. Caveat, this will be resolved with the upcoming release of tvOS 15.4 as the beta version has the ability to connect to captive portal internet in hotels.2. Ease of use – plug it into the HDMI port and power via the Micro USB port via the TV or power brick. Then sign into your Amazon account.3. Picture is really good on both 4K TVs and 1080 TVs4. Responsive when going through menus and applications – caveat, if there is enough storage available to make memory and swap cache available. (See below).5. Main screen is customizable and you are able to set your favorite applications there. Especially helpful for use by kids.6. Ability to set multiple profiles. I have two daughters and was able to add the kids profiles that they use on their Amazon Fire Kids tablets. We will not go into the annoyances with the Kids interface. Caveat related to limited storage and having to “download” applications to the Kid’s profile is counts towards the storage limit.Annoyances:1. Amount of storage is only 8GB? It’s 2022 Amazon could afford to add more storage to these devices without adding much to the cost. Even 16GB of flash storage would be better. Having to offload applications in order to make cache available to applications can properly run gets old. Yes, I understand you can attach an external device to this for giving it more storage via a hub for applications but that negates the “throw it in your backpack and go” idea I bought it for.2. Not being able to easily close down applications to make more RAM and storage available (see above). I know this device is more or less running Amazon’s version of Android, but even a quick way to shut down applications from the remote would be convenient.3. The constantly running ads in the main interface and now the ads that pop-up when using live streaming applications like DirectTV Stream. We’ve come accept commercials are annoying enough when watching broadcast TV but an ad that takes over the screen in the middle of the program is a bit too far.4. No geo-location ability. This means applications that have the ability to “know” where it is based on the IP address of the internet will automatically know which channels to load (or allow you to “spoof” your location with a VPN). If this is not present services like DirectTV Stream default to the billing zip code and you are locked to the channels for your billing zip code.5. Kid’s Profile cannot be sorted and customized in the same way the regular profile can. Unlike the AppleTV, it is not a profile set with age restrictions and purchase restrictions and it being there same interface as the adult profiles. It might be cute to have a kids interface but it’s annoying for kids who already know how to navigate the regular interface. It is the same type of profile that the tablet has and more or less shows what “Amazon thinks they would like” based on habits. Applications cannot be pinned and in addition to this they have to be re-downloaded after being added to their profile instead of just appearing on the profile. This counts towards the used storage. Amazon needs to fix this across all of their devices and do what iOS and tvOS does and have a data partition for a user with applications be available to all users so you do not have to re-download applications. The above said, I’ve deleted the kids profiles. My kids only go to the pinned applications and access their profiles continued in those applications.6. All of the privacy settings are automatically set to “allow” – location, watching history, targeted ads, application downloads etc. You have to go into every application as well as the settings for the device and the application setting on the device to turn all of this off. Unless you really “dig” the settings are kinda hidden which is the point as Amazon makes a ton of money off of selling the data provided by the device and applications to 3rd parties.7. Updates are a PITA. Update notifications are given but not for how many or what they are for. Usually it takes several attempts to check for and run all of the updates. Several times I have thought I bricked the device as it seems to hang when “installing”. Backing out of the update, restarting the device and running the scan for updates then shows the update completed and another update is showing. This is a common theme with all Android based devices. Conclusion:If you are an Apple user and looking for something that give you access to your streaming services (Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, DirectTV Stream, PBS etc) on the as well as AppleTV+ this device will do the job. If you are like me this will more than likely be your travel and secondary device that gets tossed in or stays in a bag. DO your due dillgence and turn on all of the privacy settings to “off” or “do not allow” for the FireOS and each application, this usually stops the ads during live TV streams.

    Extremely susceptable to interference!

I have an IT background, so installing this thing should have been extremely easy. However, I had issues with Wi-Fi connectivity. We had an ok signal, given that the router is a bit far from the room we use this in. However, the speeds were incredibly slow. The device would also lose connection to the remote and render the thing useless. The only thing that would work would be to disconnect the power, and it would still buffer and eventually lose the remote again. After quite a bit of troubleshooting, I determined that the signal to noise ratio was very poor. Something was interfering with it. That something turned out to be my TV. Power cables will have the same interference. Now I have solved it. The device is FARTHER away from the router now, but it is removed from the source of the interference, so it now functions as expected. Your mileage may vary, but if you have trouble with it try getting an HDMI cable and a female-female coupler so you can move the device far enough away from other electronics. Walmart was out of stock of the coupler so instead of a $5 coupler I spent $35 on a 4 way HDMI switch, but I figure I’ll use the extra functionality anyway. This product lost 1 star because of the incredible hassle required to set it up. Also, it has support for Wi-Fi v6, and my router is not v6 capable. As with any standard, the device is backward compatible. I only mention it because you may have much more success if you have a newer router, I can’t say. I wish the fire stick could let me force the choice between 2.4ghz or 5ghz because there was no interference on the 2.4ghz spectrum. I was simply not going to reconfigure my router for one device.

Fixed sound glitch problems we had with previous Lite version

We had constant Dolby sound glitching problems with the Fire TV Stick Lite when watching 4k shows/movies that have Dolby Vision/Sound, so we upgraded to this Fire TV Stick 4k Max, and the sound drop-outs stopped. We like almost everything about this – more control with the additional buttons such as volume, but there are a couple of issues with it.One minor issue – the volume control changes the volume very slowly. This might just be with our particular TV, or this might be an issue for others at all. Some people might even like that it adjusts the volume very slowly. The big issue – for me anyway – is that the battery cover is loose (brand new, right out of the box) and slides off easily while just trying to use the remote. You’ll find several other user reviews that have the same issue. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t open the box and start using this until after the return window. (We’ve had a few Fire TV Sticks over the years and never had that issue, so I didn’t expect to run into that). It’s extremely annoying to feel the battery cover sliding off in your palm when just using the controls.Otherwise, I would have given this 4k Max 5 stars.I would still recommend this unit, but just make sure you open the box and check the battery cover within the return period so that if you received a loose one you can exchange it.

    Worth upgrading?

I thought the original Firestick TV 4K was a pretty good budget media player and so when I found out they were releasing a new model I couldn’t help but see if things really improved and if the benefits of the added wi-fi 6 would also play a big factor in its improvement.I conducted all my testing on the 5ghz signal about 20 feet away from my wifi 6 supported router. First, I tested basic streaming apps like netflix, hulu, and youtube. Not once did I notice a drop in quality and the connection never failed so I saw this as a good sign.I also tested some live tv on my hd home run ota device via Kodi’s plug-in and while it wasn’t a very long test things seemed to be running fine. I also tried out the new live tv feature which lets you sync live tv apps like sling tv into the main menu so you don’t have to open the app to start surfing for channels. It’s a really neat feature. It doesn’t support the hd home run app but hopefully it will at some point.Like my last test with the previous fire stick, I had to test out my personal media and the results were certainly interesting. I started with a DVD iso using the mpeg-2 codec and found that it loaded almost instantly if not in just seconds. The previous firestick had very long loading times so this was definitely a surprise. Unfortunately, blu-ray rips with the vc-1 codec still stutter with playback so you may want to consider going with the firecube tv 2nd generation but there is a workaround I’ll talk about later in the review. The big test was with Ultra Hd rips that use the H265 codec and it’s working..but not to my surprise. Kodi unfortunately was not handling playback very well even after I updated to a newer version that released the same day I started testing. I had to use MrMC($2.99 on the app store) for playback and had no hiccups and that is surprising given this app is a fork of Kodi.I also tested on Plex and found the vc-1 transcode to h264 was working as well as the h265 which used direct play. Bear in mind that when you transcode with Plex the PC you run the server software on has to have a good CPU(at least 3ghz or above in my opinion) and additional users on Plex can contribute to playback issues so also keep this in mind.I also tried some games on the new fire stick as well. Amazon now supports RetroArch on the market place and so I took some time to see how well games were running on the emulation cores. I was only able to get one NES core to run which is messen and the firestick struggled to reach the proper frame rate on the games I tested.SNES was better. I used the latest snes9x core and found that games were running at the original frame rate and I could even use the run-ahead feature to lower the input latency. Next, I tested PSX games on the PSXRearmed core and things seemed to run well. I was able to do some enhancements like upscaling to what I believe was 480p and even did overclocking but found that it couldn’t push certain games to run at a consistent 60fps. It was really too much to expect from the CPU and I’m surprised it didn’t tank the performance when I tried. Finally I tested a Dreamcast game using the Flycast emulator and from the initial test I knew 3d accelerated games that ran at 60fps were just not going to make it lol…so I gave up.So is the Firestick TV 4k Max worth the upgrade? To be honest, I’m not quite convinced it is. I tried using the original Firestick TV 4k before the max arrived and was shocked to find out that it ran the H265 codec just like the new stick! I swear it was not working before! It had been a while since I ran any personal media on the older model and so I guess improvements were made?I do think the wifi 6 feature can make a small argument for the upgrade especially if you have a house full of users streaming content but it’s hard to give a definitive yes to the upgrade.

    Excellent but

I’ve used almost everything Roku, shield tv all generation of fire stick, apple tv. This 4k max is pretty much the best all around in my opinion. If you have a 4k tv that support Dolby vision and you want access to apps this is for you. Remote great, some people don’t like the menu I think it’s good. Android TV menus is dull in comparison. Everything with this stick even the home menu support Dolby vision ,unlike the shield tv ,which makes for great picture quality. Interface fast and responsive tested on live streaming apps which are the most demanding no issues. The fire stick could use a little better graphics processor for upscaling older content but that’s the only real downside. Tons of free apps for those that are serious about cutting the cable bill in half. It’s only competition is the shield tv which doesn’t support Dolby vision in as many apps it’s starting to show its age. The shield tv almost upscales to the point of over shoot and it’s 3x the price. Bottom line if you have a 4k tv with Dolby vision support or just love more apps go with fire stick but if you have a 1080p tv then it would probably really benefit from the shield tv upscaling technology 4.5 Stars. I bought this for my mother and will probably buy one for myself

    Samsung TV volume glitch?

I would have given this a 5 star but loses volume for a second or two, then reconnects every so often. I have 4 Samsung smart TVs, purchase 5 firesticks, 2 were 4k for 65” and 75”. The three other TVs, 2 smart Samsung, work perfect. The two with the 4k firesticks periodically lose volume for a second or two then are fine. Found others reviews online with same issue.Have reset both sticks, changed hdmi ports checked settings and still happens. Called Samsung, both TVs are newer and tested perfectly. Was told by Samsung they do not support firesticks and to use apps. Firesticks are updated faster than Sansung updates hence the purchase. Called Amazon customer service where they offered to exchange firesticks. My thoughts are there is a hardware glitch so I’ll wait it out a bit before replacing devices and logging into all my apps. Maybe it will get resolved.

Efficient and Enjoyable … Remote Design is AWFUL.

The Firestick works so well that I use and enjoy it every day while sorta hating myself for buying it. It has replaced all my other streaming devices in a way that kinda makes me sick, but it’s just so darn good at what it does. Congratulations, Amazon. It adapts well to our old sound system and even to an older (pre-HD flat screen) TV. Takes some configuring, but generally recognizes components like magic.I hate the remote. I absolutely hate it and I came here to scream into the void about it.I get it, Amazon. You went with small, sleek, and “modern.” Here are the reasons old remotes were not made this way, and why it frequently leads to screaming and swearing:SIZEOld remotes were chunky for a reason. This one is tiny and smooth. It slips from unsure hands. It slides away between couch cushions. In the middle of a movie my dog jumped on the couch and it slipped into the tiniest cracks in the cushions and was nearly lost in a gap in the frame. It vanishes into the house as soon as you take your eyes off of it. Making popcorn and you set it down? It’s gone. Opened a couple of beers? Good luck. Kids are screaming? Dog is barking? You need to pause your program for any reason? Either you lost the remote and can’t pause it, or you’ve paused it and now the remote is gone. Its design is more than ableist (which I accuse it of frequently), it’s just garbage. Yes, I know there are products to compensate for this spectacular failure, but they shouldn’t be necessary. Just make a TV remote for human hands for TV purposes.THE STUPID BUTTONSSpeaking of ablism, old remotes had large buttons with raised surfaces. This design is associated with products for the elderly and disabled, but it also benefitted the able-bodied because those buttons could be found and used in the dark by anyone. Some had a light-up feature. Some glowed in the dark. Large buttons were easy to find. They took more than a slight pressure to push, and the best ones had raised designs so you knew what you were pressing without looking at it, and didn’t have to look away from the TV to hunt for them. The number of times I have pushed “Back” or “Home” instead of RWD or Pause is utterly infuriating. There’s a tiny little dot where the Home button is. Easily missed. Placed by someone who has never used a remote before. Who never thought about how much someone will hate their product every time they got to press Pause and find themselves on the home screen. I often think about what this would be like with kids. They’d be screaming. I’m already screaming. It’d be a mess.Sometimes the buttons get pressed when the remote slides away into the cushions. At least in the old days it took a little more effort to push them by accident. Now all it takes is the slightest touch.IT’S STUPIDThe whole remote is designed by people who have never used a remote before.NO TETHER – NOR PLACE TO ATTACH ONEThere’s not even a tether. At least in the old days if you were going to design a tiny terrible product you would at least have an attachable wrist tether and hope it would compensate for something. I would attach it to a larger lanyard – preferably one that glows in the dark and/or has an internal LED.THERE’S ONLY ONEJust throwing this out there: Old TVS used to come with a PAIR of remotes. If you’re going to design a remote slightly larger than the one for my old CD player (which, interestingly, was never lost and had none of these problems because it was designed by someone who knew what a remote was for), and slightly smaller than a Wii remote, at least sell the product with 2 of them. Don’t charge extra. Just sell 2. One of them can be the standard version without Alexa. I don’t care as long as a 2nd remote can theoretically be found when the first one disappears in plain sight.Screw this remote. …Now back to my show.

    Remote malfunctioning

The first set I purchased had an issue with the remote. I had to change the batteries everyday. Also pressing the prime video button on the remote would switch hdmi channel on my TV. Returned. With The second set I decided to turn off the fire stick every night thinking that the constant on situation made the remote battery drain too quickly. It has worked fine so far.
