Works very well with my Samsung Galaxy A51 phone

I didn’t really need to have a smart watch, this was just a try one and see if I like it purchase. That’s why I decided to go to a used Samsung watch to pair up with my current Samsung A51 that is a little dated but works very well for my needs. The watch I ordered was listed as opened but not used, all original packaged parts included, packaging damaged. The price was higher than the reconditioned watches but lower than new. The watch charged and connected to my phone with no problems. Several updates were made and I began to set it up for my use. The installed apps were mostly easy to understand and I tried to keep it simple. I’ve had watches in the past that bluetoothed to a phone and were supposed to indicate notifications but were not very useful and they ended up not being worn much. This watch is much better, I don’t have to have the phone close to maintain connection, can store information and update when connection is restored, notifications are reliable, I can see and reply to text messages, the list goes on and on that really work with my Samsung phone. After about a week several apps did major updates and functions greatly improved. I like the buttons and rotating ring layout, the touch screen works good even with a screen protector in place. It tracks my sleep and exercise very accurately. I now only remove the watch to charge it or shower. It is becoming one of those “how did I ever live without it” items. I’m very happy with the watch. Try one if you have a Samsung phone.

    Love it!

I vowed never to get a smart watch, but when a guy from work showed me his new Gear S3, I fell in love.I have a Note 4 that I rooted, which in turn made me lose all capability of using Android pay or Samsung Pay. I was a little bummed at first, but resigned myself that to the fact that I would rather have root on my phone, then pay by phone capabilities. When I heard that Samsung Pay worked with the S3 that was a big selling point to me. I used it at Publix tonight for the first time, and it worked like a charm. Just held my watch by the card reader and purchase went right through.Awesome!I bought the Frontier model, which suits me, but the Classic looks really sharp too. Some of the watch faces are absolutely beautiful. There are some free ones and some really nice higher end ones for a couple dollars in the app store. I know people are saying that there aren’t a lot of apps, but there are still plenty to choose from. You can turn on notifications for just about any app on your phone. I’m using Handcent for text messaging on my phone instead of the stock app and it works great. I can receive and send texts directly from the watch. I also use Viber a lot and it works equally as well. I also loaded Uber, Glympse, Find My Phone and a couple other apps. One of the coolest apps I found though, is called Camera Remote. You can set your phone on a tripod or just prop up somewhere and then control it from your watch. You can see the camera view on your phone from your watch and take pictures directly from the watch. You can even set a timer delay, so the watch does a countdown before the phone takes a picture. Great for group photos, without having to run back and forth to the phone. The Tizen OS is buttery smooth with zero lag. I made a couple phone calls from the watch and the people on the other end said they couldn’t tell I wasn’t on my phone. The speaker on the phone was plenty loud and I had it at about half way up. I don’t think I would use the watch as a phone very often, but its nice to have. I haven’t had this watch very long, so I’ll update this later.

Not just a gimmicky toy but one that would be useful and enhance the conveniences of a smart phone

I have been anticipating this watch for a long time. Being a long time user of Samsung Galaxy S phones and a techno-geek, I’ve been waiting for a watch that would seamlessly integrate with the phones functions. One that would be a natural extension of the phones capabilities. Not just a gimmicky toy but one that would be useful and enhance the conveniences of a smart phone. I think Apple did a nice job with their watch, only Apple doesn’t play well with others. Apple phones are not compatible with 90% of the market, Android powered phones. Samsung has filled that void. The Gear S3 is a wonderful piece of technology. It’s rugged, it’s handsome and it integrates beautifully with my Galaxy S7 edge.Every piece of technology has its pros and cons. The Gear S3 is simple to set up, effortlessly integrates with email, messaging, music, weather and so many more phone functions. You can easily configure the watch to present the apps to you in a way that orders them in importance. Check messages, email and so much more without taking out your phone and make calls from your watch effortlessly using voice commands. You can answer calls, return messages and much more from the watch. It’s a pleasure to use and very intuitive.I replaced the rubber strap on my Frontier with a nice metal band from Trimirr (see separate review) and it’s both sporty and dressy at the same time. I downloaded a clock face from Gear O’Clock (Tourbillon) and the watch looks amazing. Adding faces and downloading apps is a breeze both on the phone and the watch. This watch is Easy to learn, easy to use, easy to setup and easy on the eyes. Now for the cons. There really is only one con that is immediately apparent. It’s not small and dainty. I’m a pretty big and brawny male and this watch suits my frame and my appearance perfectly. It’s large and rugged looking. It makes a very clear and definite statement. If you’re more demure this is not the watch for you. It seems that Samsung has staked out robust males as its target market. I hope they design a watch more suited for the general population. Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy this technology.

    Outstanding!

I am a tech guy with a healthy appetite for gadgets. After deicing which phone of mine I should use primarily (Pixel 3XL or Iphone X Max) I decided on the Pixel 3 XL. But….what watch? Finding a replacement that meets the features of the Apple Watch is no easy task. If I could use my apple watch on the pixel, I would! So, I had a older model LG watch which is just ok. The battery life is dismal with minimum use and barely makes it a day. So, I took a chance with the well reviewed Samsung Galaxy S3. I could have waited for the new ones to come up this fall, but they removed the bezel, which to me is a strong selling point.I got my S3 and put it to the test. It’s big, but yet thin. It doesn’t have that Oreo Cooking thickness sitting on my wrist. The colors and clarity are great, and the watch just feels like it was built with quality. So, how does it compare to the Apple Watch? I would say it is just as good, but in a sightly different way. Getting used to a round face vs. square and larger on my wrist won’t be a big deal. The notifications are great. What I like with Samsung is that I can actually change the notification tones on the watch. There are several short tones to choose from that make sure you hear it, but it’s not obnoxious. The Bezel! Best way to navigate a watch. It’s fluid, yet precise, so your not going past the screen you want. THe locations of the notifications are to the left, and the widgets to the right.Battery! Holy Cr@p! 2 day’s of use including monitoring my sleep last night, and it’s only down to 63%. That beats the battery on the Apple Watch.Apps: Not as robust as Apple or Wear OS. There are plenty of apps, but Where is the Dark Sky App?Summary: If you want a watch that lasts a very long time and does the job, this is it. It takes a lot to impress me, and this watch did. Check out my picture and watch face. Sorry for my hairy arm. Cheers!

If you like using Samsung pay at ANY card reader, THIS is the watch to get!

My last watch was a Huawei gen 1 and I loved it. (Despite it’s limitations) Read lots of reviews, and did buy another watch before this one, and returned it due to locking up etc. I factory reset that watch 5 times before giving up and sending it back. I’ve had NO problems with this watch, and was reluctant to switch from Wear OS to Tizen which is why I just didn’t buy this one in the first place. Now? I’m very glad I did. Tizen might not have to largest app store, but what’s there works really well. I have no regrets now of dumping Wear OS, despite a few paid apps I lost. The watch itself is very fast, no hesitation, few hiccups with connections or anything else. Also, and one of the best things, is my old “range anxiety” (Like having an electric car) is just nonexistent now. After 12 hours, I typically have 60% or better battery despite running AOD all the time. (Always On Display) If I wear it overnight and turn the brightness down to 2, and turn off the AOD, it will track my sleep and lose only about 3% battery overnight. I use Watchmaker, and two of my designs are pictured. (Search for Ueltzen in the Watchmaker app, my designs are all free) That Watchmaker app is one that kept crashing the other watch I sent back. (Never a problem on my Huawei or Zenwatch) The best thing about this watch is the MST that the new Galaxy (And most other watches) lacks because Samsung decided to remove it from the new version. I can walk up to ANY card reader terminal, even ones at gas station marts in tiny backwoods towns, where the clerk swears “It ain’t gonna work!” and before they can finish the sentence, the reader beeps, and I enter my PIN and out comes a receipt. I even used it at a Walmart where I’d left my wallet in the console of the Jeep, and paid with the watch itself, you do NOT have to be near the phone for the Samsung Pay to work! Few clerks or cashiers have seen it before I use it, so it gets a LOT of comments.

    Don’t hesitate!

Great Smartwatch I always have my doubts to buy a premium Smartwatch but this watch is really awesome specially if you are a tech person who loves technology and gadgets this a great Smartwatch to start.Pros ++Samsung Pay, MTS+Water resistant+Activity tracking+Workout+You can reply messages by voice or text+GPS+Calendar+Yes you can see your whatsapp notifications in your Watch you cannot reply with your WhatsApp app but is obvious you have a friend or familly in your whatsapp you can send a text or a voice message from your watch+Few extra widgetsCons –No Google Pay, but Samsung Pay works like %97 percent everywhere-Battery, I set my watch display always on and I got 24 hours with at least %20 to %24 battery left, so if youplan to have this setting always on I recommend to buy a portable battery and charge your watch inside your bag or briefcase and use a regular watch until is fully charged or buy a extra Gear S3 LOL believe me if I had a better income I buy another Gear S3-Not %100 Water Proof, is >water resistant< the instruction manual warning you do not swim in pools or at beach with your watch LOL-4GB Storage, I have 1.4 GB Free LOL, and I download like 6 watch faces plus adding one of my favorite pic of my crush actress, you can also can customize your face watch with a picture of your preference, and I transfer one song, 1.4GB Free.Since I got this watch when I go to the grocery store, theaters, anything with a debt/credit card reader I use my watch to pay is pretty cool and I love it, like I said I recommend this for tech persons, no idea if the GPS or fitness tracking and all that kind of stuff is decent, so if you a pro fitness person and you take super mega seriously your workout to post your abs and biceps in Instagram I don't know how good is this watch for that area, but this watch have it, I track my weekly Workout plus having a Samsung Smartphone it also help.

    The funny thing is

I really want to give this 5 stars, but there are a few issues:1. The altimeter is not very accurate. I was recently on the Atlantic ocean beach and it said that I was over 20 feet below sea level. Not possible unless I have gills.2. The stair counter is not very accurate. I can climb the stairs to my 2nd floor and it will not count it. I walk at a consistent pace up them and swing my arms naturally, but it won’t count it. However, sometimes I will look down and see that it counted sets of stairs that I haven’t even ascended.3. This runs Tizen OS rather than Android, so there aren’t a lot of apps for it.4. Voice recognition when sending texts has stopped working while using English (North American). If I switch to English (United Kingdom), it seems to work ok. I am from the midwest of the USA and do not have a strong accent. The funny thing is, when I first got it, English (North American) worked fine. Seems like Samsung dropped the ball on one of their updates. English (North American) works fine for the Alexa type thing that it has, interestingly enough. Now for the good:1. Being a tech geek, this is an awesome concept. Getting and sending texts, emails, etc. from my wrist is just awesome.2. Battery life is pretty good, averaging between 2-3 days per charge.3. Wireless charging. Enough said.4. While disconnected from the phone, the watch falls back to wifi and can do some basic stuff (sadly not text), calendar and even internet browsing (with the right app, albeit slow) works fine over wifi only.In summary, even with its shortcomings, I am fairly pleased with my purchase, but would be more pleased if the issues get resolved.

I’ve had it with this watch! Buggy. Overly complicated. Looking for something else.

Update at the end of this review…Highlights:Looks nice.Reasonable selection of appsMany watch face screens availableProblems:Very poor battery life. Less than a day in many cases if you use many watch apps for workouts, GPS, etc.Only one alert tone leaves you wondering what you got an alert for. This is truly awful. All alerts are grouped together with minimal ability to turn them off. This even includes stupid Samsung or carrier ads.Very few useful watch facesThe text is often very small and difficult to read. No easy-to-read options for many apps. No way to enlarge fonts. The watch goes brain dead at least daily for a minute or two. Totally dark. Resumes by itself.Apps are often VERY SLOW. (For example it sometimes takes several seconds for steps to update once you are on that screen. Nearly all screens show old info for at least a second, then update.)The Samsung Health app takes over the watch so you can’t see other alerts or manage other apps while it is running (i.e. using S Health on a treadmill? Sorry, regular heartrate screen not available and SH heartrate too small to read or not updating.)The heartrate monitor is generally pretty awful compared to the others I’ve used. The watch restarts PHONE apps randomly. (i.e. Pandora on the PHONE starts playing by itself in the mddle of the night for no reason because you left the app open on your PHONE and the WATCH told it to start playing.) Read that again. It is really wierd and a known bug. When you are playing music through your phone, your PHONE stops playing music when your WATCH moves out of bluetooth range and does not restart when you return. You have to restart the music on the phone. (This is more annoying than you can imagine.) No way to fix this other than turning off Bluetooth on your watch. Known bug.Is that enough? I can go on.This is my third smartwatch. My first was a Fitbit Surge back in 2015. That watch was a GREAT fitness tracker and had some basic smartwatch features like email/text alerts. What was nice about it was that every function I needed was only a click or two away. Hop on a treadmill, push 2 buttons, tracking starts. I also have an Apple 2 watch, which in hindsight did everything I needed it to, but many functions were more like 4 or 5 swipes/clicks away. That might sound dumb, but when you are 4 or 5 swipes/clicks away from everything you use regularly, it starts to be a pain. This Samsung Gear 3 watch? It is…different. It took months to get used to some of the ways it handles things. Rotating the bezzle is cool but kind of a chore and difficult to do precisely. Swiping only works well if you set up your apps in the order you expect to use them. The standard app menu is awful. And messages? OMG this thing makes noise all the damn time and I can never figure out what kind of message I have gotten because the watch only has ONE ALERT TONE! You swipe or rotate left to see message alerts. You have to manually delete old alerts.OK, I’m just going to stop here. The phone has many good ideas in concept, but it is pretty awful in actual use. The software just doesn’t work well enough for me to recommend it.Update: The watch will no longer hold a charge for a full day, going completely dead by 6:00 pm. I’ve had this watch for a little over a year now and the battery is already fried???? I decided to continue to use this watch until the next generation Apple phone comes out and then I’ll be switching back….if I can last another month.

Amazing watch with a few minor quirks.

This is my first smartwatch and I couldn’t be more pleased with it save for a couple of things that I feel could be improved.I’ll start with the feel of the watch. It feels expensive. My that I mean that it has weight to it. It’s odd that people attribute weight to more value when it comes to products sometimes. The band that came with this watch is a very soft rubber. It’s probably going to be replaced soon though. It’s a comfortable band and looks decent but I personally would like something that looks a little classier.I’m not going to describe every app that is on this device but I do want to talk about one specifically that I don’t care for. It’s not really an app but more of a feature. It’s one of the reasons that caused me to give this watch a slightly lower score.S Voice. Personally, I don’t like it. I’ve tried many times to make it work and use it, but it’s just not good in my opinion. I tried to use it since I wanted to use all the features of the watch, and it just wouldn’t cooperate. When it did respond to various commands, the voice was so bad and computerized that it was nearly impossible to understand. S Voice gives this great watch a knock down. :(The only other knock on the watch is the battery. I charge it to 100% and b y the end of the day it’s at about 50%. So really it could last for 2 days but I’d rather see it last for nearly a week. It’s not horrible but I think they could do a little better.Setup of the watch on my OnePlus 6T phone was easy. You’re walked through every single step. Once it’s up and running you have access to so many different watch faces (which I can’t seem to get enough of) and a wide variety of apps. All in all, it’s a great watch that has a couple of things I don’t care for. If you’re in the market for a new watch I recommend the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier.

Descent looking watch. Heart Rate Sensor = So so

I was pretty excited to receive this watch. After about a month, the first one I did receive was actually an international version even though the headlines said “guaranteed to be US version). First clue it was not was the 2 UPC stickers on top of the original. Opened the box, looked at the manual and nothing was in English. The plug was European style. I pressed and held the button to get the Samsung pay as suggested in earlier reviews, and nothing. I reached out to Amazon. The tech was great. They got me in touch with Samsung directly. Samsung recommended to have it sent in. The Amazon tech basically said “Screw that! I’m sending you a new one” Had the new and correct one in 2 days. Hats off to Amazon customer service, nothing has beat them yet. Keep it up!!!Okay, off to my review on this smart watch.Battery life: I do need to recharge this daily. I do use it with the watch face always on, heart rate sensor always on and location on when needed.Fit: This is comfortable on my wrist, often not realizing it is there (after I got used to it)Watch Faces: The app could use a little tweaking to making watch faces much easier to find (Thinking Filters) There are plenty of watch faces to choose from and if you don’t like any of them, you can design your own with additional Samsung software.Size: The watch is big. I am coming from and Amazfit bip watch and this is a bit larger.Heart Rate Sensor: If I am sitting doing not much, the sensor is spot on. However, if I go walking, treadmill, jogging or elliptical, the heart rate sensor is seldom correct. It is putting me at over 180 beats per minute. Me being over 50, that puts me in the dead category. Comparing the 180 BPM to the treadmill or elliptical, those tend to read about 110 to 130. Doing a pulse check confirms this. This is the reason I am docking a couple stars. For me, this is critical.Notifications: Love the fact you can get notifications on the watch. You can even reply on your watch directly either through typing or talking.Phone calls: you can in deed make and receive calls directly through your watch. Note, your phone does need to be nearby.Sleep: I have not tried. All in all, been pretty happy with the watch, just wish the heart rate sensor would behave correctly.

This Watch Luddite has been won over

I always have thought that the watch is the one classic accessory that wouldn’t be replaced by a computing device. I’ve avoided digital watches in favor of quartz and automatic watches with good old analog time-telling capabilities. “I’ve no need to digitize my life any further,” said the man. And I have turned down the Apple watch. But this old man still can learn new tricks, and this watch really surprised me with its versatility.Let’s be honest: I got this watch because 1) I am an android user, 2) I was taking a 2-week European vacation, 3) it was available on Warehouse Deals for cheap, and 4) I wanted to have the convenience and security benefits of paying with NFC without pulling out my phone. I really couldn’t have cared less about any of the other features.Suffice it to say that for my intended purpose, the watch worked admirably. But on the trip, it also gave me information about my steps and actvity which was great. I could check for messages from my travel mates without pulling out my phone. The S3 was able to read out my GPS directions so it was less awkward to follow directions while walking. And I discovered that I could change watch faces at a whim. Way more than I expected. And I loved using the rotating bezel as a control. Now nothing is perfect and that’s true with this watch. To be fair, I gave it the highest rating because it far exceeded my expectations and made me a believer in the usefulness of smart watches. However, it is important to know theseFirst, although the stated battery life is 2 days, when you are traveling and using it a lot it’s safer to assume 1 day. There was one day where my charger came apart from the wall and the watch did not charge overnight, so it died half-way though the day. I feel that there should have been some low battery warnings before it shut off, but I didn’t get any. So that’s why I gave only 4 stars on battery life.Second, the main button of the watch stopped functioning. However, I made it through the trip and shipped it to Samsung and they repaired it at no charge. So while it was good that I could function without the main button, it was disconcerting that it broke during the trip. At any rate, all fixed and all good now, so still a good deal.Third, you need to note that with your phone constantly in connection with your watch, it is likely that you will see reduced battery life on your phone. This hit hardest while traveling, and probably was exacerbated by the different networks we were using, but the upshot is that you can put the watch into Airplane mode and make up to 5 purchases before it needs to sync with your phone again. So unless you are constantly using the watch, then you can do that. However, then you won’t get any notifications. This shouldn’t count against the S3 specifically but I gather will be true of all smartwatches.Fourth, it may interfere with bluetooth connectivity to your car stereo. I have had some issues and have found that putting the watch in Airplane mode solves most of them. I mean, you don’t want to check messages or get phone calls on your watch, do you? Still, a minor inconvenience.Fifth, although this smartwatch supposedly allows you to use dictation similar to a limited Siri or Google agent, it is way worse with word recognition than the phones themselves. Almost unusable, IMO.Again, these shortcomings do not affect my current usage of the watch, but may well prevent adoption of newer features. In my book, this watch is a home run for Samsung and has changed my mind about smartwatches.

Great watch has proven itself over ~6 years

I bought this watch 5 years and 10 months ago. It has proven itself worth the price in all that time. There have been only two issues. The first is the battery needed to be replaced about 2 years ago. The cost of replacement was not prohibitive and I am glad I had the battery replaced and didn’t abandon this watch for something else. The second is a problem that has plagued the watch since the beginning. And it’s not a physical problem with the watch it is in my opinion a shortcoming of the software and to be truthful it is minor and very limited in how it affects the watch but it’s there none the less. The issue is the watch does not record when you ascend a flight of stairs. At least here in the USA where the normal height between floors is 9 feet. Our floors in most residential and light commercial spaces as most know are 8 feet from floor to ceiling then another 12 inches for the floor itself which results in ~9 feet from one finish floor to the next. However the watch does not register this 9 feet as a ‘floor’. If I go up and down stairs normally with my arm at my side or on the handrail the watch will not record that I have ascended a floor. This is consistent behavior for the watch over 6 years and many software updates. But just as consistently if I raise my arm up to shoulder height as I reach the top of the stairs then the watch will record that I have ascended one floor. It needs that additional two feet to ‘see’ my climb as one floor. Every time I raise my wrist and the watch up to my shoulder the watch will record a floor. If I do nothing the watch also does nothing. This is what I have observed over years of use. I emailed this to Samsung years ago but never got a response. All this would take is adding the ability for the user to define the distance between floors and everything would be working as expected.Other than that if my watch died today I would not hesitate to buy another new on of the same model. But 6 years later I would buy a newer version of what I have now no doubt. Still, there is nothing limiting that I see in this watch even 6 years after it’s initial release. It is still supported by Samsung and loads of software is still available from Samsung and third parties on the Galaxy Store. I have not loaded any software other than what is available from through the Galaxy Store.

Stop asking yourself “Do I need it?” or “Would they like it?” and just get it already!

Style: Rugged but sophisticated. It’s the perfect watch for someone who may want their watch to look classy at work but not too flashy off the clock. It’s universal, it works well with any style. Whether you’re roughing the outdoors in feet of snow or coming into an important business meeting, it makes a statement.Practicality: “Do I need this?” I asked myself every time I passed one at a store, saw an ad, or it happened to pop up on Amazon. The answer; yes I do. This has been a game-changer at work and home. As a teacher, my phone is always going off from group texts with other teachers, administrators, parents, advisory members, and more. This allows me to keep in the loop without whipping my phone out in front of my students. I can also use the bevel to quickly contact teachers during plan periods across the building or out of the building to save myself both the walk and the time. It’s perfect in all weather conditions. Is it below zero outside and you’re bundled up and have a thick pair of gloves on? That’s fine, just use the dial or go into your settings and adjust the sensitivity. Is it raining? Still works, and it’s water resistant. Two of the biggest features: Find My Phone; for those of you who forget where it is or perhaps it slipped in between the couch cushions and you’ve looked everywhere else. Second; The silent alarm. You can set alarms that vibrate only so if you want to catch a quick siesta and not oversleep, it’s perfect. Not to mention if you have a busy schedule but don’t want to have a ringtone going off or to wiggle your phone out of your pocket in the middle of talking to someone, it delivers a discreet vibration that with a simple swipe can be dismissed.Battery: I haven’t charged my watch in almost 3 days and it’s at 50% now. The charging dock is wireless, and it can only be charged wirelessly so it’s more water resistant. Aside from how fast the watch charges, the dock works as a bedside clock if you don’t wear it to bed.Health: I walk a lot, more than I thought I already did. This watch has surprisingly encouraged me to walk more by syncing it up to my Samsung Health app and competing with friends and in global challenges. The heart rate monitor is also a wonderful feature. Whenever I measured it on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge I felt like I should see a doctor about having a heart condition because it was always 90-100 when I read it. However it turns out my heart rate is 50-70 resting and 80-100 when I’m busy at work.Other hidden features: I added a dog toy squeak sound as a widget on my phone. Why? Because my dog doesn’t always come when I call his name. So I just twist the bevel, tap the play button, and he comes running up to me every time. The uses for the Gear S3 are only limited by your imagination.Customization: The number of free watch faces seems unlimited. I spent 3 days looking through watch faces trying to decide which one I liked most. The wrist band is interchangeable and Amazon carries all kinds from plastic to leather to metal. It’s easy to change and they’re very secure. Is it really water resistant?: YES! You can dip your hand into a kitchen sink filled with water and there will be no effect done to the watch. Gone are the days of burying electronics in rice.My only con: I wish there were more compatible apps, however, it seems like each day there are a treasure trove of new apps I see that can work with the Gear S3, for now it has everything I need. Though teaching app design to my students, I am a person who loves to go through and test out every app I can.

    Highly recommended

I’ve been using this watch for about 4 weeks now, and am truly impressed. I call out more Cons than Pros, but I really do enjoy the watch. A lot of my Cons are trivial, and potentially resolvable with future app upgrades. The watch has been used from daily wear through a multi-day whitewater rafting trip in extreme conditions (water, sweat, dirt, 105 degree temp). I’ve been using it with an Android phone.Pros:- Battery life is great, even with Bluetooth pairing with a speaker and playing music all day. Easily 3 or more days on a single charge with standard use with BT pairing to a phone. Charging is through induction, no plugs to break over the life of the watch.- Music storage on the watch, while limited, allowed me to store 130 songs. Was able to transfer songs from Google Play to the watch (see Cons below). Was able to play music entirely from the watch without the phone (one of the main reasons I purchased the phone) – heavily tested on my trip so I would not need to access or drain my phone to play music from while in wet conditions.- Watch face catalog is extensive and high quality.- Application catalog is extensive.- Gear app on Android is pretty solid and informative. The app doesn’t crash or have clunky user experience. It seems well thought out and implemented.- Definitely rugged. No scratches or cracks so far.- Do Not Disturb is a nice feature addition and helpful.- Find My Phone/Watch feature. I didn’t think I’d use this, but have used it several times already.- Connection via Bluetooth and the Watch works very well and reconnects seamlessly when in range.- Bluetooth range is surprisingly great. When paired with speakers, I could be 30 feet away and it would still be connected.Cons:- S Voice dictation for messages is not great. It rarely knows when I’ve stopped speaking, and there’s no way I’ve found to force it to stop listening.- Sending text messages can fail, and when it does you lose the message and have to start over again. Doesn’t allow you to resend.- Music management is not good and transfer is slow. You have to install a non-free application to pull music from Google Play, but it is possible. I was not able to figure out how to build playlists, so I was stuck with Shuffle.- Music Shuffle does not seem to be truly random. A lot of the same songs would play. I have a feeling there is a single reused seed- Storage (4GB) is incredibly small and not extendable (which would arguably impact it’s IP68 rating). The watch comes preloaded to about 2.5GB used, so you’re extremely constrained. This is the biggest limitation for a watch that touts being able to store music.- Playing music from the watch might have a memory leak. After a while Bluetooth connection would fail and require a full watch reboot to resolve. I’ve only ever had this happen when playing music from it for a significant period of time.- Altimeter seems a bit wonky with auto calibration. At sea level it thought I was underwater.- Notifications can be obnoxious and based upon your phone’s notifications. In some cases (meeting reminders) it will buzz every 60 seconds or so to remind me until I dismiss it. There’s no option to snooze. Trivial but the only way to change is to change your phone’s notification preferences.- No configurable day/night mode. It’s trivial, but I’d love a way to change some settings, including watch face between day and night, or backlight intensity, automatically (regular face @ 100% during day mode, red face @ 50% during night mode, for example).- No sensitivity control or calibration to adjust when the watch face lights up. Trivial, but there are times I look at the watch and it doesn’t light up, other times I’m not looking at it lights up.- No LTE/Cell. I knew this wasn’t an option when I bought the watch, but I would LOVE it if I could.- Google Maps is not natively available on the watch… all options require purchase.Misc:- Clean the watch with soapy water regularly. The bezel can get gummy after awhile and rinsing with some soapy water cleans it up.

yours all look like calculator watches to me)

I’m a big fan of le Galaxy Gear for its ease of use and effectiveness at keeping me in touch with the everyday goings on of my smartphone. As far as smartwatches go, it’s among the classiest (sorry Apple Watch users, yours all look like calculator watches to me). My previous S2 Classic had an air of dignity about it… a sort of unassuming presence that promised to remain so long as you respected it, appreciated it, and met its expectations… Indeed, the S2 was an ideal companion for the most respectable of gentlemen and women…Not this guy. This S3’s a BEAST.I chose the frontier because I had a tendency to, you know, do things with my arms that occasionally ran them into solid objects. These interactions would always terrify me. While the S2 had enough durability to withstand even my most wild gesticulations, I always worried that I’d end up killing it through some negligence then spend the next several days in deep regret. Not the Frontier. This thing is about as rugged as you could want in a smartwatch. It’s got all the friendly usefulness of the Gear line, with asolid rubber strap, sturdy steel frame, and the famous rotating bezel has those cool compass markings for when you get lost without cell service… And if you’re the type of person who actually needs such a tough timepiece for whatever adventures you’re on, you may actually find this feature useful. The battery life is a step up from the previous generation: It takes longer to charge and has a tendency to get hot, which halts the charging process. Actually, this would be the watches biggest downside if the battery life on my watch said anything less than 30% right now… but it says 60% and I haven’t charged it in two days so I’m fine with waiting a little longer for a full charge. This particular model is noticeable. It doesn’t have the finesse of the Classic line, but it’s still got all the class and flash worthy of the Galaxy name. The design is as pretty as ever and the notifications are an excellent excuse to keep looking at it. I’ve never been much one for Smartwatch Apps, and likely won’t get into them so I’m not concerned with whether or not Samsung has developed any. The speaker and microphone functions give the watch more accessibility, and I can now voice record and possibly even talk over the phone, but likely won’t since I still have an actual cell phone to fret over. I’m sure one day there will be an all in one of some sort. So, I suppose the most effective overview I could give is this: The Frontier is the Gear model for those who want to do stuff outdoors. It now tracks altitudes as well as distance, has a strong and noticeable speaker for those quiet mornings without a headset, and looks as beautiful as ever on your wrist. As for downsides, the long charging time and tendency to heat up during charging are self-fixing, with the improved battery life and the average persons tendency not to wear a watch to bed with them (although you totally could and it would track your sleep for you). I’ll post an update if this ever becomes an actual issue for me, but if it ever does I suspect enough time will have passed that the newest model will have already have a fix.PSA – if at first your Gear does not charge, reset the watch. I know this seems counter intuitive, but wireless charging actually has a software aspect to it which is much more likely to be the source of the problem than the hardware. It’s an easy fix and it worked immediately for me, which is why I didn’t see it as a ‘con’ so much as an added step towards functionality. Only lazy people would complain about it, and I ain’t lazy.

4 killer apps – and some other nice features

Since they were first announced, I stayed away from smart watches. They seemed like toys, with very little real use. I had a little extra funds this Christmas and decided to take the plunge. Here’s what I found…There are a few reasons why I really like this watch…what I’d consider the “killer” apps:1. Watch faces. OK, it’s a watch and should tell time. But the range of faces available is large enough to meet most peoples’ tastes. I prefer the interactive faces that allow me to click an area of the watch and pull up key information I view frequently, like the weather, my emails, the calendar and text messages.2. Hands free, voice texting in the car. I already have my wrist close to my mouth when my hand is on the steering wheel. I can use S Voice to call up the text messaging, compose the text message by voice, it reads the text back to me, and I tell it to send. All this without taking my eye off the road. I don’t text on my phone when I’m driving, but my car can read texts to me. When something important comes in, I prefer to respond without having to pull over. This watch makes it easy.3. MST pay. I’ve used the watch to pay at almost every store I use…Panera, grocery store, hardware store, etc. Even if the store doesn’t have Android Pay, the MST pay feature allows me to use the watch to pay. I’ve tried the same with my phone (Samsung Edge S7) and it works only sometimes and is just about the same as pulling out my wallet. This is easy…works all the time.4. Speaker phone. Yeah, I have a phone nearby with a speaker. But I find that I fumble the phone many times and lose a call. So I tried taking a call with my watch. The speaker is loud enough to hear without holding it to my ear. And the microphone must be good enough because those on the other end of the line never complain about not hearing me. The speaker (not available on the S2) also allows the watch to interact much better through S-Voice.I’d say those four capabilities make the watch worth the money (it’s a tech luxury, but worth it). The other things I like about the watch include:- Easy to read screen. It’s a big watch but no bigger than the high end mechanical watch I had been using before. The big screen is crystal clear and, even with my aging eyes, I can see it perfectly well.- Looks great. The watch looks very high end, especially with some of the nicer watch faces installed (see 3 of my favorite watch faces, attached photos).- Buttons and bezel. The mechanical elements (turning bezel and side buttons) have a nice feel to them…don’t feel cheap. And they always work.- Battery life. I use my watch constantly as I have lots of messages every day. I still get a solid two days on a charge from it. I’ve worn it to sleep to have the watch monitor my sleep cycle, but that feels gimmicky to me…so I end up taking it off and charging it every night. Not even close to running out of battery in a day. Normally, I go to bed with the watch at 75% battery left.- Heartbeat monitor. I like that I can see my beats/min over time. It’s not a killer app and doesn’t impact my existence. But it’s a cool bio-thing to monitor.- Exercise monitor. The watch is accurate at picking up my activities and stores it through my Samsung S-Health account. Again, not life changing, but it keeps me thinking about moving and exercising more often…probably not a bad thing. So, I give this 5 stars after a month of use. I’d recommend it to any technophile. It’s not a toy like Apple watch. It feels like the kind of thing a business person would use. If you’re one of those people that never stops looking at their phone (I’m not), you don’t need a smart watch. Save your money. But, if you’re like me, and hate pulling out your phone and prefer to leave it in your pocket or bag…this is worth considering.

An overall useful gadget to go with your smartphone.

This is the first smartwatch I’ve purchased for myself and overall I am impressed. While many of the reviews I’ve read complained about how big it is, it looks comparable to those Suunto Sport watches. I have very small wrists for a male, but I don’t think the device looks over the top. For a woman, I might recommend the S2 as that is the one I bought for my wife and it fits her perfectly. The overall function experience is pleasant to use and takes very little time to get acquainted to. Nearly every feature of the watch can be customized from the watch faces to the order of your apps. Reordering apps can be a little clunky on the watch face if you have big fingers but can also be accomplished from your smartphone. Many of the watch faces can be customized by color but also what information you want displayed. From a glance you can see the time in a different zone, your heart rate, a step count, weather, battery information, and a few other options.Pairing the watch was seamless but took a couple of tries for system and app updates to go from my phone to the watch. Eventually it worked its self out. Notifications are viewed by rotating the bezel counter-clockwise and take about 1-2 seconds to transfer from your phone. I received messages via text and also whatsapp and was able to respond to both from the watch. Responses can either by voice dictation, voice message, hand writing, or old school predictive text. The voice dictation appeared to be fairly accurate and was by far the easiest. Hand writing was mostly accurate but very slow. The predictive typing can be tricky since the buttons are so small.I have not taken or received voice calls through the watch but I listened to the devices speakers with music and it was a bit tinny. I probably won’t take calls with this device unless I’m alone because I think it might look a bit silly.I’m not much of an athlete so the S health features probably won’t be used much. However the heart rate monitor appears to be accurate and the occasional reminder for you to get off your butt and move around a bit is a welcome addition. Playing around with the S health features does present me with a minor annoyance. Specific exercises are kinda buried in the app so if you want to set up a sit-up exercise, you’re going to have to click through quite a bit.The display is very sharp and brilliant. I can only partially make out individual pixels when I bring the watch close to my eye. I keep the display always on and it partially dims when my wrist is turned away. When I turn the face towards me, the display will increase illumination. I’ve never had to flick my wrist back and forth to get the display going so this feature is flawless. The side buttons have a good tactile feel with the lower being “home” and the upper being “back”. Holding the back button will launch Samsung pay and double clicking the home button will launch an app of your choice. The only reason I gave this device four stars instead of five is due to the quality of the bezel. It feels a little sloppy and doesn’t give a satisfying click when rotating. Also tapping on it makes a clicky noise. It just feels like it could’ve been tightened up a bit.Whether you pay full price for the device or if you got the discount, I think the price is fair for what you get. I haven’t done as much research into other android smartwatches but the Gear S3 seems to be about as full featured as you can get.

    Love my Gear S3 Frontier.

I switched late 2016 from a HTC One M8 to Samsung Galxy S7 based on the S7’s highly rated camera image quality, among some other features. I really liked the Samsung Health app from my first use but felt the utility was really limited by using the phone as the sensor: I had to carry it with me to track steps and it wouldnt effectively track my sleep, both things I became interested in monitoring. I was very resistant to the idea of paying for a peripheral (wearable) branded Samsung because, well, they have programmed the Samsung health app to only work with Samsung wearables. You can use a Fitbit or other device with the S7, but not with the Samsung Health app. I finally broke down as they counted on me doing no doubt, and got the S3 Frontier about two months ago. I absolutely love the automatic tracking of my exercise (be it walking, cycling, hiking, heavy “dynamic” yard work, etc.) and has always accurately identified my activity type. I love that it tracks how many minutes I sleep and how many of those are motionless vs light and I can rate my sleep and add to it manually if for example the battery runs low and I have to recharge at night, though I avoid this. It measurs my heart rate without me knowing and graphs it all for me in the phone app. I can add my weight each morning, blood pressure, blood glucose and add notes and categorize the data in different ways (pre-meal for glucose for example). There are many peripheral products that measure weight, etc and will auto sync with the app if you want to spnd the money. This has been a good tool to help motivate me to track and improve my health. It started with steps, but counting steps doesnt make you healthier (it may indicate you are healthier, according to recent studes), but I started jogging and it will either auto track my time or I can tell it to stopwatch for a set minimum minutes and it tells me my heartrate continuously. I ran a 5k the other day and pre programmed it for 3 miles so I knew how much distance was left and where in my target heartrate I was so I could slow down near the upper limit. The phone app then synced and gave a graph of exact times at different heartrate ranges, elevations, speeds, and other data along corrlated to portions of my route. I love it and love it is waterproof. The rubber band is great for being active too. I got a 3rd party metal decorative band and used it once but prefer the OEM band. The data seems to be accurate. Last night for the first time it did not register my sleep, but maybe because the battery ran very low. It is a very useful tool. I love that I can change watch faces easily and there are 3 or so I rotate between. The biggest downside would be when using GPS the battery needs to be recharged frequently – I top it off while in the shower daily, and then need to let it charge for two hours or so every second or third day. It has lots of other features as well but I mainly love the watch, message notification and health data tracking. I think it is well worth the price for these features.

Great watch, great battery life for a smartwatch.

One week ago, I would have rated this with 5-stars. However, for some unknown reason, the battery life, which was 3+ days, has gone down to about 8 hours. I haven’t downloaded any apps or changed the settings I have been using for the past month; the only change has been some sort of software update.I’m giving a temporary 3-stars in hopes that I can figure out a solution. If I can, I’ll bring this up to 5-stars. If I can’t, I’ll lower this to 1-star and return it. Either way, once I figure out what I’m going to do, I’ll provide better feedback with what I like and dislike, etc….====Update: So, after the watch completely discharged its battery, and I let it fully charge again, I’m back to a full 3 days of use. The only setting I changed after it charged was turning the ‘connections -> wifi’ from ‘auto’ to ‘off’. I figure I almost always have my phone, and if I don’t, I’m probably not near an open access point WITHOUT a captive portal (requiring browser-based login). That doesn’t necessarily explain the battery drain because this was how I had the setting previously. This is a great watch, based on what I was looking for. I previously had an LG G watch, one of those goofy-ass rectangular smartwatches, and other than the style, i really liked the functionality. I like the style of many new round smartwatches, but they were either prohibitively expensive (Tag Heuer), or the battery life was crap (most smartwatches), or, in the case of the LG Watch Sport and Style, you either got more than you wanted and paid for it, or not enough. My criteria:Looks (subjective, but essentially, a round smartwatch that wasn’t too bulky, but with a screen big enough to use)Functionality (had to work with a non-Samsung Android smartwatch, show notifications from hangouts, SMS, calendar, etc)Battery Life (had to very easily make it through 24 hours)Non-LTE versionI think the watch looks great. I’m a bigger dude, so the watch doesn’t look out of place and huge on my wrist like some of the other photos I’ve seen. If you have svelte features, maybe the size would be problematic. I’m using the standard band that comes with the watch, which looks good, but I like that I can easily switch bands if I want to.Functionally, the watch is great. I get notifications from SMS and Hangouts, as well as from Google calendar, which I use at work for upcoming meetings. Initially, as I was researching the watch, I wasn’t sure if a non-Samsung watch would pair well with this, since it doesn’t run Android Wear (it runs Samsung’s Tizen OS). The only issue with regard to Tizen is the lack of apps, but I don’t really care about extending the capabilities beyond what it already does (wihch is what I need/want). The watch has decent sensors for ‘exercise’, though I suspect there are superior watches for that. I don’t exercise that much and don’t care about measuring my heart-rate anyway. I can feel my heart about to explode out of my chest when I play hockey, which is a good enough indicator that I’m getting some exercise.Battery life is awesome. I’m currently on my third day since its last charge, and other than the weird drain issue I first wrote about, the watch has been solid. I do currently have wifi off, as well as location, since I usually have my cell phone nearby; the watch gets that info from the phone. Knowing I can turn either of those on, if I needed to, is nice. I also have my watch face set to only turn on when I move my wrist or push a button. I’ve read that keeping the display always-on would reduce battery quite a bit. Good thing I’m not always looking at the watch face.Bonus features!Samsung Pay. I never used Android pay (NFC) for purchases. I was sort of waiting until it was more ubiquitous and expected, as opposed to everyone looking at you like ‘one of those types’. That’s just my own insecurity though. But with this watch, I just press a button, select a card, and then hold the watch near the card-paying-thingie (NFC terminal) at the store. That’s great and all, but what’s really super great is that it doesn’t have to be an NFC terminal. As long as it’s got the magnetic strip, this watch will work! I tried it at a local liquor store and the woman said, “this device is really old and doesn’t have that fancy technology.” I replied, “this watch is magic, check this out!”. We were both pretty impressed.Another feature I really like is how you can reply to messages. There is an old phone style keyboard, with 2-3 letter per number, which is just terrible. There is the ability to speak into the watch, which I don’t use because nothing comes close to Google’s speech recognition, in my option. And the other option is to draw the letters on the screen. I wasn’t sure how well that would work; it works great! Just draw each letter, quickly, if you want, with an underscore for a ‘space’, and then send. Love it.Finally, Dick Tracy, you can answer phone calls through your watch. Just speak into it. I haven’t really used this, and figure I will never use it unless I’m tied to a shark, which is tied to a missile, or maybe if I’m driving (I don’t have Bluetooth in my car). But it’s cool.Anyway, this is a good watch.

Great watch for the 21 Century

I’ve been using my Gear S3 Frontier a.k.a my “Dick Tracy” watch for the past 2 week and I must say it is a pleasure. I’ve made and received calls via the watch just to have the experience of doing it; it is not the idea why to do things but it works great in a pinch. I run the following apps on my watch: Phone, Contacts, Samsung Health, Weather, Samsung Pay, Music Player, Reminders, Alti-Barometer, Scheduler, Alarm, World clock, Gallery and of course find my phone. I’ve also setup two different Calendars to send a notification to the watch too.The phone works great but I don’t want to talk into my wrist all the time, and you can move the call you answered on your watch to your phone, which is what I did one time, it was easy. Contact, there is not much to say about that. Samsung Health is good, it tells you when you have climbed a set of stairs, as long as the stairs are more than 10 feet. It counts your steps, I’m at 4200 today and my goal is 6500, and the goal is easy to change. Heart rate monitor is fine you just need to wear the watch a little tighter than you are likely use to. I found the heart rate to be accurate to my pulseoxygen meter. The weather is as accurate as accuweather is. Samsung Pay works just like apple pay, easy to use and no problem to report. Music Player is best when your watch is paired with a Bluetooth headset. I’ve not missed a meeting since the Scheduler has moved to my wrist. The Alarm, well it is an alarm and if will wake you up. The World clock is helpful since I change time zones when I travel, now I don’t wake the wife by calling when she is asleep. The Gallery is the only one I think is kind of silly, the watch face is small for really viewing a picture. My biggest concern was the battery life; with all these apps doing there thing and the always on watch face turned off I’m getting 4 days of use out of the watch battery. I don’t know what it would be if the watch face was always on but I’ll be trying it soon.I don’t like a cluttered watch face, my current one has the time, date and battery status in percent. I have 9 others watch faces stored on my watch so I’m ready. There are lots of free watch faces available.I’m happy I selected the Samsung Gear S3 watch.By the way my first watch call was to my youngest son, whom has the same watch, I didn’t know that until he told me he answered my call via his S3 watch.I believe you will be happy with this watch.

I LOVE my Gear S3 Frontier!!!

UPDATE: 81219I just wanted to come back and report that my original Gear S3 is still going strong and that I ended up giving it to my Mom who is still using it without any issue. I loved my bluetooth version so much that I purchased another one off of Ebay for a mere $100.00! This was probably 8 or 9 months ago and it is the AT and T version and it was used in like new condition. I do not use the LTE, I continue to use it as a bluetooth device only and it works flawlessly!! Samsung really hit it out of the park with the Gear S3 Frontier. I can still get 2 and a half days out of it and it is running the latest software. I can not no comment on the current versions of these watches but if The Gear S3 Frontier is any indication, I’d say get one if you want a smartwatch!First off, this is my review for my Bluetooth Only model Gear S3 Frontier running Tizen 3.0.0.1 that I purchased here on Amazon from the seller Ocean Reef Electronics.I am using a Nexus 6P running Nougat 7.1.2. Now, on with the review!UPDATE: Had a defect with the used 6P that I purchased so I returned it and am now using a Motorola X Pure Edition and I must say, battery life is even BETTER!! I guess it’s the better radios in Motorola devices, so my watch isn’t working as hard to maintain a connection maybe? I’m not sure but it has greatly improved my battery life. It used to be down to about 55% to 58% when I’d go to charge it the next day, now it’s still at at a good solid 78% charge.*NOTE: Just a suggestion but after having issues with my Fitbit Blaze failing after a year and one month due to the thin layer of film on the back cracking from sweat and causing the battery to overheat and the tracker to die, I decided to put a tempered glass screen protector on the display AND the back panel of my Gear S3 Frontier. Some folks seem to be having the same issue with their S3’s that I had with my Blaze and I’m hoping that the additional protective layer will keep my Gear S3 Frontier from suffering the same fate. You may also want to add one as well if you have not already. Just wanted to throw that in there. Now back to the review! I absolutely LOVE LOVE L-O-V-E LOVE this watch!!! First off, I am one of those people who thought smartwatches were just a gimmick to get people to spend money needlessly. The reason I purchased this watch is because I got mad at Fitbit LOL! Seriously. I bought a Fitbit Blaze a year and a month ago and one silly little flimsy piece wore out (because of poor quality material used) and instead of letting me use my offered 50% discount towards a new model tracker that has addressed the admitted material issue, they told me I could either get a free replacement Blaze Pebble (the tracker without the straps) pay them for a new Blaze or pay them for a model that was inferior to my Blaze. Instead, I went with a free Blaze Pebble, and while I was waiting for it to arrive I came here on Amazon to look at smartwatches. I ended up going with the Gear S3 Frontier and I am SO glad I did!!PROS:I live in the boonies and connection is spotty in my house so what can I do now? I can leave my phone in the living room where I get good signal and walk around the rest of my small house and still receive notifications, text messages, and make and receive phone calls over bluetooth ON MY WATCH!!! I know some folks say the fun of this wears off quickly but because of the poor reception on my phone, it has been an absolute Godsend to be able to leave my phone in a good reception location and still make and receive phone calls and get notifications on my watch. The sound quality is exactly that of my phone on speaker. I use this feature almost exclusively when I’m at home. I don’t have bluetooth in my car so I use an output jack in my car and while I don’t talk on my watch in the car very often, I do use the controls on my watch to answer calls that go to my phone so I do not have to reach down and get my phone to answer calls. It is so much easier to swipe to answer on my wrist while driving.MUSIC I easily figured out how to transfer music from my phone to my watch and I have had no trouble listening to the songs on my watch, both through the built in speaker and by way of bluetooth earbuds without any trouble. I also have no trouble with using the music controls on my watch to control the music player on my phone and I love how quick and easy it is to switch sources right there on the watch screen. Now, I’ve only tested this in the house. The true test will be when I’m outside mowing grass and I have my phone wrapped in a bandana in my pocket. I imagine it will work just fine but I’ve not been out to mow since I’ve gotten my watch. It’s so nice, I’m not even sure I’m going to use it while mowing.UPDATE 10/2/18 I have had many opportunities to use the music controls in and outside the house and they work brilliantly! I am able to use the watch to control the music that I have stored on my watch AND I can also use my watch to control my playlist if I am listening to music that is stored on my phone. Infact you can go back and forth between the two immediately, right there on the watch. I had RF ablations done on the right and left side of my back and both times I went for the procedure, the surgeon and his staff had my play the music on my watch! The first time internet was down and they couldn’t access Pandora and I had left my phone out in the waiting room with family so I volunteered to play music out loud that I have stored on my watch. They were all blown away lol! So much so that when I went back a few weeks later for the procedure to be done on the other side of my back, the surgeon said, where’s that awesome watch, I want you to use it again to play music! I thought that was funny. :-DSOS: I have not had a chance to actually try this out but I do have emergency contacts plugged in and I am happy to know I can use my watch to ring for help if my phone is out of reach.CUSTOMIZATION: I love just how customizable this watch is. Everything is so easy to replace or customize. The bands are easy to replace, the watch faces are easy to change and customize. I use the Gear store as well as the Facer app and while you can pay for your watchfaces, there are so MANY free ones that I can’t see myself ever needing to shell out money for new watchfaces. I even purchased some Awinner brand rubber body guards to not only add a layer of protection to my watch, but also allow me to change up the colors of my watch. I like how I can use one of my songs as a ringtone or notification tone and how it give me an option to start the song from the beginning, or where the song becomes enthusiastic, if that is where I would prefer my ringtone to start.UPDATE 10/2/18 This is an update about the Awinner colored protectors, not the watch watch itself. I mentioned above that I use the Awinner frame covers not only to change the look of my watch, but to protect my watch during periods of high activity but I stopped using them for that purpose because sweat was collecting under the rubber. After 3 or 4 hours of pushmowing the yard, I’d come in and take the frame off and there would be alot of sweat pooled on the inside of the rubber, so much so that I became worried it would cause sweat damage to my watch so now I use the colored frame covers for asthetics only. Right now I’m wearing a gray and black stripped nylon band with the white colored Awinner rubber frame protector and it’s kind of looks like I’m wearing Jack Skellington on my wrist! I get a chuckle everytime I get a glimpse of my watch on my wrist, besides it is October right now as I type this lol.FITNESS FEATURES: Ok let me first start off by saying I am not a super fitnessy person. With that said, I think this watch blows my Fitbit Blaze out of the water with it’s fitness capabilities. While I have had a chance to wear both my Blaze and my Gear S3 Frontier at the same time to try and do a comparison, the comparison could not be perfectly accurate because I had my watch on my right wrist and my fitbit on my left. The first time I tested it, of course the watch logged about 600 more steps than my fitbit blaze did, but I think that’s because I had the watch on my dominant hand and so far as I can tell, there is no way to adjust that setting like you can on a Fitbit. So what I ended up doing is the next day, I wore the watch on my less dominant hand and the fitbit on my more dominant hand and this time the Fitbit was logging more steps, so I have come to the conclusion, that atleast when it comes to the Blaze and the Gear S3 Frontier, the step count is roughly the same and definitely more accurate if you wear it on your non-dominant hand.Another fitness feature I love is the “get up and move” nudges! These are AWESOME because they aren’t just nudges to get up and take some steps, it actually gives you an option to perform one of three preloaded exercises. “Twist”, which is locking your fingers together, pushing your arms straight out in front of you and twisting from left to right. There is “Reach Up” where you do your arms the same but you go up and down instead of side to side. Then there are “squats” where you cross your arms across your chest and push your elbows out and squat down. Or if you don’t want to do those options and you’d rather just get up and walk around you can do that too. The only thing I do wish, is that it would keep counting after I do the initial 5 reps. It is neat how it counts them down four you but it only counts 5 and then the screen goes back to the homescreen even if you keep doing the reps. It would be nice to have a bit of continued on screen encouragement from the watch.UPDATE 10/2/18:I still love the watch for fitness BUT Fitbit really is on to something with their 250 steps an hour goal reminders per hour because while the move reminders are nice what with having onscreen choices for other activities besides walking, I REALLY wish it were more like the 250 steps an hour that Fitbit has going on their trackers. I wish I could customize and hourly goal or even have the same set hourly goal like Fitbit and get reminders and incouragement that keeps you going for more than 5 counts. I NEED that motivation lol! Unfortunately the fitness aspects of the watch are not quite as motivating as I would like for them to be. I still prefer it for the build quality, over anything Fitbit has to offer though but I really do wish they would update their fitness software to better compete with Fitbit’s. I don’t even need the SHealth app to be like the Fitbit community, I just want the tracker software to be more like that of Fitbit’s tracking software with the hourly nudges and onscreen encouragement.HEART RATE SENSOR: The heart rate sensor on my watch performs about as accurate as the one on my Blaze did and both where in a few beats of the heart rate sensor I use on the nursing unit where I work.FIND MY PHONE/GEAR: YEAH!!! It is so nice to finally have a way to find my phone when I’ve set it down somewhere and I can not remember where lol!UPDATE 10/2/18 I use the find my phone/ gear feature ALL THE TIME!! I mean, the frustration I have saved (alone) has made this watch worth it to me lol!BATTERY LIFE: I work at night so I charge my watch before I go to bed during the day so that it can be fully charged by the time I go to bed. This allows me to leave my phone in my living room and still go to bed being able to make and received calls. My battery could probably last me a good two and 1/2 days with the way I have mine set up but I chose to charge it everyday an hour or so before I go to bed. I usually get down to 48 to 53% after a 24 hour period which is quite acceptable to me considering all my watch does. UPDATE: as I stated at the top, I switched to a motorola device and now my battery is at a solid 78% battery life after a 24 hour period the way I have it set up.CONS:I only really have one and if they fixed it this watch would be 100% perfect to me and that is the notifications. If you receive a series of notifications from the same source, messaging, facebook messenger, etc, you only see the latest one that was sent to you so if you are asleep or somehow don’t notice you’ve received a message, when you open your notifications on your watch, it will only show you the last response sent to you and none of the previous ones which is probably the silliest think ever. It’s not a huge deal for me because I really do not have contact with very many people but if you use your phone for business or you are very social, this is going to bug the heck out of you.All in all this watch is AMAZING!!!! Easily the best electronical purchase I have ever made and I have absolutely zero regrets so far.

Great Watch for anyone. would buy again

I purchased the Galaxy Gear S3 shortly after getting a Galaxy S7 edge. I previously owned an Apple watch as well with my iPhone so I had some experience with wearables. The watch is nicely made. it has solid construction and nothing feels janky or loose. Ive been wearing the product for 5 months and I love wearing it besides my horrible watch tan. I will say the watch is slightly bully and may not be for everyone. I have a smaller watch so it seems big on my wrist but I got over it and I’ve seen many people wearing huge watches with no features.Connectivity/app uses: the Bluetooth works well. stays connected out to about 60 feet and reconnects when coming back into range. turning Bluetooth off and on your phone easily connects/disconnects, no issues with reconnecting that I’ve noticed.I use it for messaging apps, timers, reminders, and fitness. messaging receiving and replying is easy with the ability to speak, type, or draw out your response; moving to your phone from the notification is easy as well. The phone and watch work in sync about 99% of the time with the occasional hiccup of my phone lighting up with a text and my watch not showing so until a few minutes later or I raise the watch/touch the watch.Functionality/Widgets: The ability to add widgets/shortcuts to access with the ring on the watch is great. I almost never access the app panel because anything I use the watch for is easily accessible flipping the ring on the watch once or a few times. I have a quick launch widget with timer, health app, Spotify, and find phone all accessed with one tap. Is it necessary? no. Is it nice and convenient? yes, if I don’t have the watch on I find myself reaching to access these anyway. The ability to access the golf app and know distance; see my steps or heart rate; set an alarm, start a wrokout, or set an alarm for my forgetful self I love using the widgets and the watch.Size/wearing: The watch is a bit bulky. If you wear it too tight I could see it cutting off circulation and as mentioned above leaves a horrid watch tan. The band seems to stand up well to conditions as well. I spent time at my job in the sun and wet/dry back and forth all day and the watch doesn’t seem worn at all. Unfortunately, sweat and water under the watch will just sit there and become uncomfortable/unpleasant. Also seems to be waterproof because I was on a splash park getting water dumped on me and it works fine.Battery: I personally use it sparingly on Bluetooth if I am not out and about. like this the watch can last over two days. when I first used the watch I had to turn off so many things because it would burn through battery very quickly. basically if you don’t need it turn it off. This brings me to the HR monitor. if you leave that on auto detect you will lose battery much quicker but you should still only have to charge nightly and that’s only because you don’t want to start day 2 at 35%. As well the HR monitor can be finnicky and needs to be cleaned or you need to stay still! Quiet!Overall, I think the watch is a great buy if you are in this market. If you’ve looked it up to buy more than twice and you have the spare money pull the trigger already. I’m glad I did. If you are looking for something to alert you to tects and fitness but aren’t sure about price or extra features/weight/size I would say to look at gear fit or Fitbit. The watch is great anf if you are into tech and enjoy being connected it is great.Pros: efficient, easy to connect, 2 day long battery w/some features off, cool features/add-on(golfnavi, Spotify,)cons: bigger/heavy, HRM finnicky, can cause skin irritation because unbreathable band

Works Great with my Moto Z2 Play

As I write this, I’ve had this watch around 2.5 weeks. I feel comfortable writing my review now since I have plenty of confidence in the device. My previous experience with Smartwatches was with the 1st gen Motorola 360, which I liked well enough, but was fully aware of its 1st generation shortcomings.I was worried about its ability to work with the Z2 Play since it isn’t on Samsung’s list of supported devices for the watch. But it works just fine with the Z2 Play. I’m pretty confident that any conventional Android phone that meets the minimum requirements for the watch will work reasonably well.I bought the S3 Frontier, primarily for fitness tracking and notifications which it does very well. I am a late middle aged guy and would consider myself a bit more than casual fitness person, but not a hard core exercise guy. I don’t run, that’s for young people with good knees!I could have gotten a cheaper watch to do those things, but I really liked the S3 Frontier’s looks. The only other watches that appealed to me, were the Huawei Watch 2, which was a tiny bit cheaper, and the Tic Watch E, which was significantly cheaper. I worried about the smaller size of the face screen of the Huawei, and the Tic Watch was . . . well, a boring looking, if well reviewed, watch. I had the money to burn, so I bought the watch with the most ‘sizzle’! I’m a sucker for good looking things. OK enough background on my goals and experience.****** What I have personally verified works for me:* I’ve never had any disconnect issues between the phone and watch.* Heart rate monitor is accurate. It tracks Identically with the Life-Fitness brand of elliptical trainer at my gym. It’s never been off more that 1 heart beat from the elliptical machine in either direction (Over/Under). I did notice that 4 days ago, it registered that I had 197 BPM, which is crazy since I would be in the hospital if I actually had a heart rate that high. 4 days ago was a very lazy day for me. I’m 99% certain my HR never got that high. I didn’t wear the watch all that much that day, so I’m comfortable in thinking that was an anomaly in something I did to the watch. The HR monitor has been very reliable otherwise.* The S-Health app on the watch syncs up with the S-Health app on my phone. I love S-Health! I think it is the best overall health tracking software out there, and Samsung provides it for free for your phone.* the sleep monitoring works well and syncs with SHealth, SHealth doesn’t do a lot of sleep analysis, but there are add on apps to provide that sort of thing if you want it.* When I am connected to the phone, I can actually answer the phone and talk and listen thru the watch. Surprisingly good sound quality considering.* Notifications work well. At times too well, I had to adjust which phone apps that offer notifications to the phone. The Google calendar syncs up with the watch’s calendar just fine, No complaints* The watch works well when disconnected from the phone, though it isn’t quite as robust when disconnected.* Watch faces are EASY to change, and there are Plenty of free and paid for faces to select from.* Software is easy to load and in spite of the complaints, I didn’t feel there was an inconvenient shortage of available apps to me.* Battery life is excellent, considering how much it does.I get roughly 2.5 days per charge. I spend between 6 and 8 hours a week at the gym where the watch monitors my exercise, and plays music, Plus I monitor my sleep with it. No, it isn’t a weekly charge, but it’s WAY better than the 6-8 hours I got with my Moto 360! Charging is reasonably fast, BTW, about an hour and a half to two hours to charge from about a 20% charge remaining.* VERY easy to change watch bands, I have the original sport band and an inexpensive leather band for non sport/exercise situations. Any 22 mm watchband will work, but I recommend that you buy the kind with the little lever attached to the spring bars.****** Things I Don’t like:* While the magnetic charger is nice, my moto 360 went into alarm clock mode when on the charger, so you could use the watch on your night stand as you alarm clock. It would be nice if the S3 did that.* The flight of stairs count is very unreliable. It’s supposed to measure every 12 feet of elevation, and I have to climb stairs quite a bit in my house that more than qualify, but the count is always way off. My experience says it’s pretty useless.* The watch’s S-Health app doesn’t support all the exercise functions that the phone app does. The phone app supports monitoring weight machine exercises, but you have to use “Other Exercice” to track on the watch. I’m not sure how well the two compare to each other.* The calories burned calculator varies about 10% – !5% from the devices at my gym. Not sure this is a major issue, but it might be for some.* I’m a Pandora user, I wish Pandor or Samsung would create a controller app for Pandora for the watch. It allows you to skip songs in Pandora, but that’s about it. It appears to do well with Spotify however, but I prefer Pandora.***********On the whole, I like the S3 Frontier watch very much. It does more than I need it to do, and it does almost everything well. It isn’t perfect, there is plenty of room for an S4!, (And it COULD be cheaper!) But I can recommend this watch to any Android user without any reservation.

    Disappointing at First, Amazing Later

Note: I have a Samsung Note 5, and that is the phone this watch was used with.I did a ton of research before buying my first smart watch about 6 months ago. Before I purchased this, I did some cursory research and found the Gear S3 was still pretty great, despite newcomers to the market, so I purchased it.When I first got the watch, I was so excited. I put it on and paired it and was super impressed with the exceptionally well designed and responsive UI. Using the bezel to control the watch is a stroke of pure genius, honestly. Despite the small area of the physical face of the watch, and how very tiny the icons on it are, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was able to easily and without error interact with the small icons. Then came the disappointment. The app store for the Gear is exceptionally anemic, primarily consisting of watch faces and applications that are very niche. There is no Gear support for Pandora, or Audible. Absolutely no Google apps are available for it. No Google Now. No Google Maps (although there is a well-designed app available in the store that uses Google Maps for like $2). No Android Pay. No Gmail. Nothing. The Spotify app is pretty nice, but for some reason I can’t select Spotify Radio stations in it, only playlists. I was exceptionally disappointed as I have based everything in Google. Pretty much, the only apps that are really any good are from Samsung. This was a further disappointment as Samsung apps are usually fat and offensively slow.I contemplated returning it in favor of a Huwaii or a LG Watch Sport, but I figured I’d give it a few days. The interface is just SO well made. It is very responsive. The Samsung apps actually aren’t crap this time, and they covered most of the use cases I have for my watch. So I gave it a few days. This is the part where the 5 stars come in.After using it for a few days and acquainting myself with it’s various idiosyncrasies, I began to realize that all I actually need for it are the Samsung apps. It *would* be nice if there were apps from Pandora and Audible and CityMapper and Moovit and it supported Google Now, but it doesn’t and that is actually a very workable scenario. The watch allows me to control my phone, basically, without taking it out of my pocket. So while I’m on the bus, if I swipe down on the watch face and hit the music note icon, I can control all aspects of the playback on my phone from the watch. Rewind, fast forward, pause, change the volume, change tracks, all of it. The altimeter is very accurate. I can create reminders and appointments right on the watch face. It displays the weather and my agenda using very will designed UIs. With a tap, I can zoom in on the weather and agenda to get more information, and I can plot the route to an appointment, if I included location information in the calendar item (although you have to open the phone to see the route). There is an Uber app for the watch that makes it very easy to call a cab. Finally, the watchfaces. Yes, they do get their own section because they are varied and amazing. Personally, I love the PipBoy Fallout 4 watch face. It displays an amazing amount of information using the interface of one of my favorite games. This watch face displays the following information, but you can find probably another 100 that do the same in zany and creative ways: Time, Date, Heartrate, Water Consumption, Coffee Consumption, Battery Level, Step Count, plus shortcuts to Music and Pictures, Samsung Health Daily Review, Alarms and Calendar. I wish the PipBoy interface showed the temperature, because if it did it would be on there too. Now, for the downsides, and there are some doozies.1) Samsung Pay does not work on my phone because I enabled the Samsung-provided Knox feature. I later disabled it because I didn’t like it. But you know what that did? It flipped flag on my phone that disables Samsung Pay. The Gear only works with Samsung Pay. Let me repeat that – A Samsung supplied feature, Knox, disables Samsung Pay, because it flips the flag that says the device has been rooted. You are probably thinking “OK, so I contact Samsung support and they fix it, right?” Nope. Samsung has no way to flip this flag back. They designed Knox in such a way that it makes your phone think it has been rooted, and they have no way to fix it if Knox is later disabled. That is exceptionally stupid. I am an engineer. I am aghast to think of the internal processes at Samsung that allowed a feature to be released into the wild that breaks your phone and does not supply a fix. It requires a monumental level of dysfunction for that to happen.2) You are limited to the Samsung ecosystem. So if you don’t like Samsung mail, too bad. No other mail client available. Don’t like Samsung Pay? Too bad. No other option available. Etc.3) If Samsung Mail is enabled, and it is connected to a company mail server that requires the watch to be encrypted to view mail, you will have to type in a pin just to check the time. Yup, you read that right. Want to just check the time really quick? Nope! You gotta type in your password first. Again, as an engineer, how does that get through focus testing without any developer hearing a customer say “that is amazingly stupid”. How does a developer, in their OWN DEVELOPMENT of the software, not get tired of typing in their password to check the time? It’s amazing.4) When you make the motion typical of checking the time on a watch, the watch face is supposed to light up automatically. I’ve found this to be rather untrue. I’ve found that it pretty much doesn’t work unless you are moving your hand from a stationary position, such as standing at a bus stop or sitting at your desk. If your hand is in motion it doesn’t seem to recognize the motion to look at it, despite the rather unique motion of rotating the wrist. That is a very unique movement, and I noticed that this does not happen to a friend who has the Apple watch. It seems to actually be keyed on the wrist flip to turn on, as it turns on in a movie theatre when you place your hands behind your head.In summary, great watch despite the lack of app support

Caveat Emptor : Do not buy used – completely defective item received twice from Chubbiestech

What could have been a great watch and a buying experience was altogether ruined by buying a used watch from Chubbiestech. The Samsung watch in and of itself is great, when it works. Works great, actually better than expected, however, I received a defective watch which would not charge and overheat. Raised this up to the seller and they offered a replacement. I requested them to kindly check the replacement before shipping out that at least it is fully functional and does not have the same issues i was forced to return for. Never mind that the watch was cosmetically beat up, but i don’t care much for that as long as it does what it’s supposed to do. Despite two reminders and requests, the seller sent me a second watch, which to my surprise was even more defective than the first. The big major issue with both the watches is that it cannot be charged. When you leave it on the supplied charger for any more than 20 minutes, it will heat up and stop charging. The screen shows an overheating icon and stops charging. Not only will the charging stop at this stage, but it will drain the battery even while on the charger. I received the replacement 3 days ago and for the life of me i haven’t been able to get it to go to a 100% charge. In fact it stays about 30% charge and then begins dumping fuel (discharging) whilst overheating. Second issue is that the gesture control of waking up the screen by rotating your wrist doesn’t work. It did work good on the first watch they sent me. Yes, checked the settings and toggled the control several times. Another issue with the replacement is that the UI gets stuck randomly on some screen and no matter how many bezel turns you do, it doesn’t move. Again, this was not the case with the first watch i received. Actually the first one only had the charging and overheating problem, not the others i just described. All in all, these are bad defective watches, that no one could fix and therefore were discarded. Seller slaps on a new wrist band and a charger and calls it “Very Good” condition. Very good you ask? It’s not even usable. I will advise against buying from these sellers – Chubbiestech dba Cellfeee. If you must buy refurbished, buy factory (oem) refurbished and not seller refurb.I’ve learned my lesson and will perhaps pay the difference and buy a new watch now. This one is a bust! And that my friends is what buyers need to be beware of.

    Great watch, lots of features

Great watch, lots of features. It is a little on the bigger side, so if you have smaller wrists it might be a little oversized.Pros:- Great battery life, I just tested it and made to right at 4 days from full charge to 9%, I was not using gps, but had several hour + workouts using live heart rate monitoring.- Very good look and feel. The stainless case and rotating bezel give a really professional, rugged, and classy look to it. easy to wear in all situations- Heart rate monitoring. I actually have had really good luck with the live heart rate monitoring. keep it tight and off your wrist bone and it picks up fine.- It can be used with Android or Apple phones.Cons:- I have a Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and the Frontier links to it via bluetooth. The bluetooth being on cuts my battery life in half pretty easily, so while the watches battery is great, it does impact my phone significantly. If i disconnect it from my phone, then it does lose the notification function when receiving texts/calls.- It’s monitors your sleep patterns, but you have to go through several steps to turn off the notifications, or the wake up gesture before you go to sleep, other wise it lights up in your face all the time. and regardless what you do if you turn the bezel it still lights up, so kind of annoying.- S Health app, the main app that tracks all your health and biometrics is a pretty solid app, but it seems to be geared toward the runner/cyclist, which i’m not. I do a lot of weight lifting and some cardio. There isn’t a real good app for just pulling live heart rate continuously and measuring calorie burn with our constant suggestions to move more or go faster. (pretty minor, but still a nuisance)- It can get wet, but it’s not recommended to swim with it on. They do not recommend salt or fresh water swimming, but it is capable of being submerged.Overall it’s a great product, and while a little pricey it’s cheaper than a comparable non-smartwatch with similar design. There’s a ton of watch face options available, and apps are being added daily.

    Running with the Gear S3

I had been looking for a new GPS running watch over the last 6 months and eventually landed on the Gear S3. After graduating from a Garmin 110, I decided I would like a GPS watch with smartwatch features (sorry TomTom) and on board music (sorry Garmin). After a brief foray into the New Balance RunIQ which was a bit of a disaster, I decided on the Gear S3 mostly due to overwhelmingly good reviews from Amazon reviewers. Mainstream reviews range from average to great depending on how people feel about what a smartwatch is actually supposed to do. My main concerns for the Gear were its lack of apps/Tizen support and its general overall function as a running watch. I thought I would focus this review on using it as a running watch as I have not really seen any reviews that address this specifically.Running/GPS: Overall, I would rate the Gear as an “OK” running watch. There is lots of potential, but I don’t think you should necessarily buy a 300$ device for its potential. There are many things I would like to change and would be easy to change, but right now it is what it is.You are basically stuck tracking your runs in Samsung Health, the onboard fitness tracker for the watch. Generally I like S-Health, but it could be better and there aren’t really any other good options for tracking a run. There is a lot of hand wringing over the lack of 3rd party apps and fitness tracking. Under Armour released its “Suite” of apps a few months ago (Endomondo, Map My Run, and UA Record). They all function the same way and have the same coding, so it is strange to see three different version of the same basic app. I only used these apps a few times, but found them not too my liking and haven’t used them since. When I used them, the default GPS seems to want to connect through your phone. The reason I got this watch is to run without my phone! Through trial and error, I have found getting away from your phone’s GPS/Bluetooth connection forces your smartwatch GPS to get a signal and start tracking rather than piggybacking from your phone’s GPS (Samsung, can I have an option to only use the watch GPS for a run?). When you do this with the UA apps, it tells you that it can’t find a GPS signal and won’t allow you to start a run. This leads to starting your run under your phone’s GPS signal and potentially inaccurate tracking at the beginning of a run as your watch struggles to find a GPS signal after losing the phone GPS signal. My other problem with the UA apps is the layout (which is the same in all 3 apps). It has all your important run stats on the dashboard, but can’t fit them all on the screen. This forces you to scroll down if you want to see more metrics. This is a bit difficult mid run when you just want to glance down to check your pace. It also makes it too easy to accidentally pause your run as you fumble to scroll down and accidentally hit the upper section of the screen which will pause the run. Another death knell for the UA apps is there is no music functionality built in, so to change or check music mid run, you have to go out to the main menu and go to your selected music app (again, a very difficult proposition mid run). I’ll admit that I haven’t tested these apps in a while nor very exhaustively, but these were my initial impressions.Samsung health then is the default and it generally works well. Here are my main problems with it and using the Gear S3 as a running watch in general.1) GPS acquisition: When you start a run, it gives you a 3 second countdown, but hasn’t necessarily locked on to a GPS signal. As mentioned above, this leads to very inaccurate tracking for the beginning of my run. I have taken to starting a run, then immediately pausing and waiting for a few minutes before taking off. I live in a very wooded area and need a few minutes to get a good signal. I think this has helped, but it is not a 100% cure. Another technique I picked up online is to start an app like “Speedometer” that activates and keeps the GPS rolling then start your S Health run. I did this once and the GPS worked great, but I lost about 30 percent of my battery during a 30 minute run. Also, the Speedometer app kept showing up by default causing me to have to swipe down to get back to S Health. Could Samsung have an option to lock onto GPS before starting a run like hundreds of other dedicated GPS watches? Sure they could. Will they? Who knows.2) General GPS accuracy: It seems OK apart from the above mentioned issue. I will say I have had a couple runs that have been way over distance. I have lost GPS signal a few times as well. This week I had to pause for traffic and lost a signal which caused a .2 mile loss. It is good enough for what I need, but if you are looking for highly consistent and accurate GPS, you need a Garmin. My old Garmin 110 which is 7 years old was more consistent and accurate than the Gear S3. I would say my runs deviate by anywhere from 3-5% which can affect your average pace. Don’t get me wrong, the Garmin deviated too, but I hardly ever lost a signal and run distance deviation was minimal. Again, I feel like Samsung could tweak some options for runners for getting better GPS tracking (1 second refresh anyone?). I would gladly lose some battery for a better GPS experience.3) General App data: There is a dashboard on the phone app which shows you your runs for the day/week/month. When you go into review a run, you get all your metrics. They recently added split times but they aren’t accurate. I frankly don’t know where they get the numbers because they are twice as high as my average mile time (which is oddly shown on the graph). Another deficiency is lack of course tracking. I run the same few loops regularly and like to compare my times day to day. Strava does this excellently. S-Health does not.4) Strava integration: As mentioned above, S-Health isn’t a fully fleshed out database for crunching your numbers. But Strava is! You can push all your run data to Strava automatically by linking your account in S-Health. People have seemed to have trouble with this. I haven’t had trouble pushing the data, but I have noticed the data is completely different than what is in S-health. I’m not sure where the difference comes from. For instance, my most recent run in S-health was 28:46 at 3.6 miles. When ported over to Strava it says 25:42 at 3.7 miles. That is a minute/mile difference in pace (which I would gladly take) but not accurate. My theory is that Strava is deducting some of my “pause” time from the actual run time and also rounding up the distances. There are entire threads on the internet for this but PLEASE STRAVA, MAKE A GEAR S3 STANDALONE APP!5) Split updates: I have noticed that you don’t get your split updates unless you have the watch screen active. This causes a couple issues. First of all it requires you to look at your watch around the mile marker which assumes you know about where a mile is. Or it assumes you are constantly checking your watch to see how far you have gone. Either way, if you do check “late” it will tell you your duration time is the time you are checking i.e. if you finished your mile at 8 minutes but didn’t check your split until 9 minutes, it will say your duration is 9 minutes. It will then go on to tell you your average mile time is 8 minutes, but it is a strange bug that could be fixed easily.6) General fit: This is a big watch. I tighten the strap up one notch before taking off because I like a snug watch that doesn’t move around on my wrist. I still get a little bit of what I call “ulnar migration” where the watch kind of rotates towards the pinkie side of your wrist. I tightened even more which solved the issue but almost cut off the circulation to my hand and I could barely get the watch off afterwards. This is not a huge deal. I did take the band of my defunct RunIQ. This band is stretchier silicone and you can get it pretty tight. It seems to do the job. As of now, I’m swapping out the watch band on the days I run. Takes about 30 seconds once you get it down.7) Pace: It is easy to scroll through your metrics: Duration, Distance, Heart Rate, Speed, Cadence etc. Pace, however is useless. It seems to be calculating an “instant pace” based on your speed in between GPS pings which can vary wildly. I would love to see an “average pace” and/or “split pace”. My old Garmin watch had on one screen: Duration, Distance and Average pace. That’s all I need, yet Samsung can’t quite get there.8) Other stuff: Heart rate monitor I don’t use. I have heard it is horribly inaccurate especially when doing interval or split training. It seems fine for me for just general regular pace runs. I would not use this watch to train with heart rate zones. If you are doing this, you are probably hardcore and have a Garmin anyway. Another FYI is the default setting has “target coaching” enabled. When I did my first run, my watch buzzed every 10 seconds to tell me to “slow down” which just made me want to run faster and then just annoyed me. Just choose “basic workout”or turn coaching off if you don’t need reminders on pace/distance/time. Another small issue is that you have a choice of metric at the bottom of your screen when running, which is nice. What isn’t nice is that the default is heart rate and you have to change it for every run. I leave my screen on ‘duration’ and set the bottom at ‘distance’, it would be nice if the watch kept those setting. This seems like a long list of things I don’t like, but honestly none of them are deal breakers and I have generally enjoyed using the watch. It has been a change from my Garmin 110 and I have had to alter the start of my runs to get good GPS signals but it’s worth the trade-offs. The music integration is very nice. It is easy to swipe over to see or change your music. The software is responsive and smooth (unlike the RunIQ). When you raise your wrist the watch wakes up and stats are pretty quick to update. I love being able to see your stats and map on your watch after a run records. Everything works like it should. I will also say that S-Health has updated a few times in the last couple months I have had the watch so you know Samsung is trying to constantly improve things. I see so much potential. Improved GPS setting/locking, add average pace and some menu customizations, or just add a standalone Strava app and BOOM you are there.Other watch functions: There isn’t much I can say here that hasn’t been said. This is a nice watch. It feels premium and well made. The rotating bezel is great. Tizen OS is slick and responsive and fairly easy to use. I took to it quickly after coming off using Android Wear for a couple months. The battery life is the best you will get on a dedicated smart watch. I routinely go 2-3 days even with Running with GPS/Music enabled. I have the ‘always on display’ feature off. The watch is very responsive when you raise it up and I prefer the improved battery life of the screen being off. The charger is great. You just drop the watch on the magnet and go. Takes about 2 hours from 0-100%. I love the built in sleep monitoring that feeds into S-Health. I love having different choices for watch faces with different stats built in. I also love being at home away from my phone but still able to answer a phone call over the watch. I love the water resistance as I shower in it regularly with no issues. It is a great smartwatch. Now the only question is, do you believe in smart watches?Overall watch concerns: People will mention that Tizen has a serious lack of app support compared to its Apple and Android competitors. Although this is true, I would like to address the overall nature of why you would wear a smartwatch. For me, I just want quick notifications. A quick text message, email, app notifications that I can see and dismiss without taking out my phone. Anything more than that, and I’m going to get my phone out. Writing a text message, phone. Checking nearby restaurants, phone. Getting directions to that restaurant, phone. Surfing my playlists to listen to, phone. Getting a detailed weather report, phone. Can you do all these things on the watch? Yes. But with my phone within reach it is faster and more efficient to do this on the phone. The exception would be if you have the LTE version and want to go sans phone. Even then, the core functionality and apps are there, but this is still not a replacement for a full smartphone. I have downloaded a few apps, but honestly I don’t use them. The core function of the watch is all built in and it works and works really well. There are a few areas that could improve though.1) S voice: Very limited in what you can do, especially it seems with a non Samsung phone. I can respond to text messages with voice control, but can’t send off a new one. Also, when you use S-voice to respond to text message, it really seems to drain the battery. Overall, it is just not as good of a voice assistant as Google or Siri. I haven’t used it much, but I don’t care. Talking into a watch is weird anyway.2) Spotify: Tizen doesn’t have many apps, but it does have Spotify, right? Check the reviews on this app though. It doesn’t work for many of us. There seems to be a bug that doesn’t allow you to connect it via Bluetooth to your phone for “remote” mode. I have gotten it to work a few times, but ended up just deleting the app. You can remote control your Spotify via the normal built in music app. Samsung did a press release that indicated Spotify will soon support “offline” playback allowing you to download songs onto the watch. I am eagerly awaiting this feature.3) Connectivity issues: I think Samsung has been working on updates for this, as it seems better now. The watch is supposed to connect to a WiFi network if out of reach of your phone’s Bluetooth. There still seem to be some lags in this area. Sometimes it doesn’t connect to my WiFi. I have had to reset my watch occasionally to get back connected to Bluetooth. Also, there was one night where my watch drained it’s battery as I think it was on WiFi instead of Bluetooth. Again, this seems better now than a few months ago.Overall Rating: It’s a great smartwatch. It’s an OK running watch. For me, it’s a nice compromise of the two. I get a good smartwatch that I can wear to work with my shirt and tie and still have a decent GPS watch for when I can get a run in. I’m hopeful for some improvements that would move this to a 5 star watch, but it works for what it is.

    Excellent Phone Companion

First of all, this will not replace a smart phone* even with LTE (vs bluetooth) as it doesn’t have full compatibility/apps to support it as your phone can do everything this can do and more (minus maybe the SOS function). But it does make a great accessory to your smartphone making for a more convenient lifestyle (luxury over necessity).* This can make for a great replacement flip phone (with LTE) with basic apps included. Just note that the screen size may be smaller for elderly/those far sighted, but the contact icons are really large. If you plan just to receive and send phone calls; this is a good option to consider as this is on your person most of the time. You do need a smart device (phone/tablet) to setup.Let’s go through some notable features:1. App notificationsCan get app notifications for ANY app, not just selected/popular ones. You can also hand select which app you want to notifications for.Watch will vibrate signaling an app notification. Vibration is not really strong (even at highest setting) as if you’re doing intense physical activity and/or heavily focused on a task you may not notice it. This can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. But there is a light orange dot indicator on your clock face giving you a visual indicator that you do have notificationsNotification displayed is the same as one your home screen on your phone. You can interact with some such as e-mail or text. There’s no full keyboard, but you can text via speech, old fashion number texting (like on flip phones), hand write/swipe in individual letters, or use suggested text response. For other notifications that doesn’t require text like my security cam motion detection for example; you can double tap the notification on the watch and when you open your smart phone, the app will automatically open up.For some apps; if you have multiple notifications, you may or may not be able to see all of them at once. Some allow you to only see the most recent one. But again, there’s a option to double tap on the screen to open the app on your phone.2. SOS functionHave to set this up on your phone app to activate on the watchBasically sends a SOS message with GPS loctation to a person on your emergency contact or 911 if you chooseGood if you’re ever in a hostage situation or stuck in a natural disaster for exampleTo activate you have to do a quick triple tap on the home button, which then the screen promps a 5second countdown timer just in case you activate it by accident. It then dials the emergency contact where it automatically puts you on speaker phone on the lowest possible volume (have to hold up watch to your ear to hear them) just in case you’re in a hostage situation and don’t want anyone is close proximity to hear. The feature also can send a generic text message and GPS location to your emergency contact if you wish3. AlarmsCan have a sound and/or vibration alarm. The latter is very convenient if you have someone in the same bed and/or room with you and have to wake up before them, but don’t want to wake them up.Again the rumble on the watch is not very strong, but with alarm it’s continuous for maybe 30secs. If you’re a heavy sleeper or your skin a not very sensitive to touch then you may want to set sound based alarm also. I recommend you test out the alarm on a day you have off (from school and/or work) or have a sound based alarm go off 5-10mins after the vibration alarm to test it.Alarm is not linked to your phone’s alarm unfortunately. So they won’t both go off the same time as they’re considered separate apps4. Health Fitness AppHave a fully featured fitness/health application similar to Fitbit and other fitness trackers.Tracks your sleep and physical activity.Like other fitness watches, the heart rate monitor is not as accurate as the chest strap on, but does give you a rough estimate. May not accurately (down to the exact numbers) tell you your heart rate in real time, but will give you a nice trending graph to track overtime. If you have friends who also use the watch/app you can compare stats, which is a great fitness motivatorApp also gives you notifications if it notices you’ve been sedentary for a few hours and will prompt you to do simple stretching exercises. You can turn this off also if this bothers you.5. Phone callsGives you large contact icons to tap on once you set them up as favorites/frequently used on your watch.Very convenient as you don’t have to pull out your phone.Goes directly to speaker phone on your watch. Good if you’re driving, busy doing a project where you are not hands free or have place to put your phone down for speaker phone**.**Don’t have to worry about misplacing your phone or carrying it around if you have to walk from place-to-place.Depending on where you pick up the call is where the phone signal will go: example phone directly, watch or bluetooth headset.6. Phone Watch FinderYou can find your phone via the watch and vice vera.Assuming both have some battery life left, bluetooth is on both devices. If phone set to vibrate will still make a sound.7. AppsApps are very limited compared to the Google Play Store and Smart Phone/Tablet apps. Most are just watch faces. There are some decent apps such as a Basic Calculator, Discount Calculator, Weather app, youtube app, music player, flash light, calendar, to-do list, yelp, news headlines, etcFor video apps it crops the videos, and drains tons of battery. You can store up to 4gb music into the watchThere’s very limited support at the moment and there’s no killer app except maybe the pre-installed health app at the moment. Wish there was a GPS turn-by-turn navigation appYou make purchases via Samsung Store, and not the Google Play store. So if you don’t have one, you have to make an account to download even the free apps. If you have Google Play credit you can’t use them to make watch app purchases. The store is also not user friendly when trying to find apps, and will take some searching to find the hidden gem or app that fits your needs8. Samsung PayVery easy to setup. Have to download multiple apps on your phone which syncs together.Have to go through this e-mail verification process with your bankSetup takes no longer than 10mins for multiple cardsIn practice makes shopping a breeze as you don’t have to take anything out from your pockets. Just hold on the back button to quick access Samsung pay, select the card you wish to use, press ‘pay’, then tap on the console at the register.Supports MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission). It’ll simulate a card swipe. Not to be confused with NFC. If the cashier says Samsung pay/Apple Pay doesn’t work, it will still work. Only exception is if the card reader is insert (card) only instead of swipe.—Misc info-Build QualityVery good. Has a heft to it, but won’t weigh your hand down. You will get used to it, as it is comfortable to wear throughout the dayThe watch is very large, at around 2 inches diameter.Has a rugged design. Looks better one males than females in my opinion due to the size. For those who are smaller/thinner profile, may want to look into the Gear S2. Just note that it’s a previous gen model and has less RAMIf you wear long sleeve shirts, sweater, jacket, etc; it will snag at the cuffAs thick as standard smart phone nowadays with thin case on. So will protrude a bit off your wrist. It’s dust, water, rain and shock resistant. The manual states it’s not recommended to take showers or swim with it though. But is sturdy enough for some extreme situations if there would be any, just don’t abuse it on a daily basisLove the twist navigation feature. Has a round circular basil around the watch face, Way better than using a small twist knob on the side or touch screen only.–DisplayVery vibrant. Similar quality to most high end smart phones.Very easy to view compared to other smart watches, again due to it’s size.–Battery lifeVery good. Can last a couple of days depending on usages, and if you use the always on watch face display. My average with watch face not always on is about 2-2.5 daysCharges wirelessly via stand. No need to align any pins, just plop it in and it’ll automatically charges. Can get full charge from 10% battery life within 2.5 hours–Less time taking things out of your pocketsDon’t have to pull out my phone/wallet as much. Great for work when you want to be discrete about cell phone usage. Also good for gym use/ outdoor jogging. For commuting in a busy bus/train, don’t have to worry about elbowing someone to get to your phone.Overall opinion, nice phone companion. Very good if you have a busy lifestyle and/or if shaving off seconds throughout the day is a big deal for you.

Works like a charm right out of the box with my Samsung Galaxy S7

I am one of those unlucky one who got scammed on “Indiegogo” about the “Cronovo” smart watch. So after giving up on that one and some more research I decided to go with the Gear S3. Especially attracted by the Frontier, since it has a bigger and more “adventurer” design than the regular or “sport” one. Plus, I have a quite large wrist, so that was also a perfect fit for me. But in case the band was too big (long), they also added in the box a smaller (shorter) one.Worked perfectly right out of the box, after the initial required full charge (the watch was at 50% when I received it). Setup may be a bit complicated for those who aren’t used to smart watch, so I advice you to read the user manual that comes with it (or watch YouTube video about the watch and how to set it up). Also, after the first setup, Samsung send you an email reminding you of your watch serial number (useful if your watch got stolen), along with the user manual in .PDF format, which is much more easier to read than the included small paper version, and also search-able too.I had a Android watch before, so using this one and set it up was pretty straight forward for me, even if this is a Samsung Gear watch and not Android specific watch. Which means there may be some Android apps that will not be compatible with it. But so far, all the apps I used with my old Android watch, works fine with this one. Some review state that Samsung do not have enough apps selection, but so far I was happy with the quite a great selection of apps available, so I was able to choose a neat face watch, along with some other great apps I needed for the watch.Heart monitor works flawlessly, but I do have to tighten the watch a little bit more for it to read the hear beats accurately. Love the turning bezel as well, and it give a nice genuine watch look to it. Matter of fact, if I change the watch face to be a classic one with analog display (the needles one), the watch look like if it was one of those genuine expensive analog one. The screen resolution is so great and bright (even outside), that if you don’t look closer you really think that those needles pointing at the time are real.On the battery side, I have everything on in the watch (except GPS for now), and it run for about 1 day and 20 hours without a charge. If I select “power saving” mode, then I could have up to 4 days of battery without charging the watch. Although, I have a habit to charge it every night before bed, so that’s not a problem for me to leave all the gadgets on, and I can fully enjoy the watch and its performance. In short this was a great buy, which I definitely recommend if you’re looking for a new smart watch, or replacement to an old one.

Awesome features for a smartwatch (and if you don’t expect your phone on a 2-inch screen)

Battery life is astounding (3 days is not unusual for me!) Samsung’s choice to go with a rotating bezel (in addition to supporting regular touch/swipe motions) is hands down the best interface on a smartwatch (sorry, Apple’s crown isn’t even close). It’s effortless to move (can even do it with my pinky finger) but doesn’t accidentally get triggered by rubbing it against your pocket. Simply awesome.Water proof (IP68)… no worries wearing it in the shower or rain. Speakerphone… awesome! And quite useful when your hands can’t grab the phone (like your hands are dirty, your kids have the phone, you left it in the other room or simply not in your pocket while you’re in the middle of doing something and someone calls). Same goes for WiFi support (and optionally, though I didn’t purchase it, the LTE option). Not always having to be tethered to your phone is great. Also awesome and understated in most reviews (from tech sites to shopping sites) is Samsung Pay… simply the best way to support payments (again, sorry Apple, but ApplePay simply can’t compare to SamsungPay). The ease of paying either with NFC or MST is awesome… especially when the fact of the matter is that in today’s America, MOST establishment still don’t support NFC readers, and those that do have hokey hardware/software. I’m in San Francisco, where tech is nothing new… I can’t even tell you how many coffee shops/cafes, quick eat places, gas stations, convenience stores, etc. either don’t have NFC, or do and have busted or finicky hardware. All I need to do is briefly hold my watch to either the NFC reader if it works, or pass it over the mag stripe reader where I’d normally swipe my card (which tends to be at least half the time due to the faulty NFC readers). What do my iPhone-toting colleagues do? Pay with cash or card. And please, don’t even get me started on the BS articles that over-hype security flaws in SamsungPay in contrived situations that no normal person could get caught in. Seriously, you don’t think you’d notice someone holding a goofy gadget 10cm from your phone/watch where your eyes are directly gazing to make the payment? MST is encrypted and uses pseudo-card numbers, just like NFC payment… your real card number is never exposed. So yeah, as far as real usefulness, it’s superb. I’m not one of those unrealistic twats that wants all of the functionality of their phone squeezed onto a barely 2-inch screen. I also happened to replace the band with one of many standard-size bands (again, Apple just doesn’t compare with their money-grubbing approach to band accessories)… I got a black metal link, and it’s color matched (same sheen and shade) to the S3 Frontier. The only thing I can fault, and it really depends on your viewpoint, is the lack of real apps… but that’s not what I want primarily. I don’t need a plethora of apps on my tiny watch screen. I need just the important ones for communication. But it would have been nice to have a few home automation apps (like ones to control my Nest, or lights, or Garage, etc.).

Winner over the new Galaxy Watch for me

I’ve been wanting a smart watch for a while now and finally decided to pull the trigger. My biggest criterion were that it had to be reasonably sized, reasonably priced, have GPS, and be able to have offline maps. I really liked the look of the Gear S3 Frontier and the Galaxy watches (let’s be real – the new 42mm Galaxy watch in black is basically the Frontier’s little brother), and I LOVE the rotating bezel.I tried out both the S3 Frontier and the Galaxy watch and came to the following conclusions.1) Look – the style of both watches are very similar (which you can see from the product photos).2) Size – the 46mm Frontier watch is obviously larger than the 42mm Galaxy. The watch band on the Frontier is thicker and has a slightly wider style that made it look larger than it actually is. I ended up buying a smaller band similar to the style on the Galaxy to remedy this. For me, the 42mm Galaxy wins on size. The screen was only slightly smaller, but the watch as a whole was much smaller (as you can see from my comparison pictures). The thickness of the two watches is about the same.3) Rotating Bezel – I found the bezel on the Frontier was easier for me to use. It’s slightly taller than the one on the Galaxy, and the notches on the side are bigger. The Galaxy bezel fit into the face of the watch a bit more smoothly, so you have to rotate it from the top of the watch, whereas on the Frontier you can rotate it from the side or top.4) Navigation – navigation through the different widgets and apps was very intuitive on both watches. You can use the bezel or touchscreen to move through items, and the two buttons on the side to select and navigate.5) Maps – ultimately this was the item that tipped the scale in favor of the Frontier for me. There’s an app you can download called HERE WeGo which provides directions from your location to your destination. Very similar to how Google Maps works. However, it also supports an offline functionality where you can download maps of an area (state / province / etc.) so you have them available without being connected to your phone. The downside to this is that it doesn’t have a satellite or topographic view, but I tested it out locally and the trails I took were all on there. So if I go hiking somewhere and get lost, I have a general idea of where I am – I can see it on the map. When I tested HERE WeGo on the new Galaxy watch it doesn’t function unless you’re connected to the phone, because you can’t download offline maps to the Galaxy. I checked with their support team and they said they will consider it for the future (but that doesn’t help me now).Ultimately I ended up keeping the S3 Frontier and returning the Galaxy. The Galaxy won on size and waterproof rating, but I just couldn’t justify spending almost double on the Galaxy when it wouldn’t meet one of my biggest criterion (the offline maps). It’s no Suunto or Garmin or Casio, but for the price point it meets my needs as a GPS watch.

    So Close to Perfection!

This watch is nearly perfect. I’ll outline the Pros and Cons below, but they could very easily make an app change which, in my mind, would make this a five star product. I’m not sure if it would be a Google or Samsung change, but it would set this watch apart.Pros:- The looks. I am 6′, average build and I think it looks great. As with many modern watches it is large, but not overly big in my opinion.- Tactile feel. I like the rotating bezel. For me it is intuitive to use and clicks in nicely. The touchscreen is responsive and accurate. For me I wish the back button was the bottom button, but once I trained myself it is a non-issue.- Display. It really is nice looking. When used in the always on mode I have had multiple people tell me they had no idea it was a digital watch.- Function. Apart from the one major con below, the watch does everything I need it to seamlessly. Alerts are timely and there is almost zero lag in function. Everything flows nicely and the shortcuts are great.- Samsung Pay! I have been using SP on my S7 Edge for quite a while and it is so much more efficient on the watch. It is faster (no fingerprint) and to me it seems to work from greater distance than the phone. It is kind of funny some of the looks tellers give you when you pay with your watch. (Many times they will say something like, oh we don’t have that here. -BEEP- Wow, how did you do that.)- Battery Life. First let me say I typically run the watch with Always On turned off. I do occasionally turn it on, but for me I typically leave it off. My normal daily procedure is to wear the watch all day and then at night to track my sleep. When I wake to shower and eat breakfast I’ll take the watch off (it is normally from 70-80% charged still) and place it on the charger. By the time I head out the door for work it is back at 100%.Cons:- The one MAJOR problem I have with this watch is the lack of integration with Google. I can’t wrap my head around why this is set up this way, but it is very frustrating. I would consider myself a heavy Google user. Unfortunately I have had to stop using the Google GMail and Messenger apps. The reason I have stopped using them is you can receive and reply to messages from these apps, but you cannot initiate a message. It is really too bad because for me they are far better than the S7 Edge’s messenger and email program. I also NEED to see programs such as Maps run natively on the watch. Yes there are alternative mapping programs you can install on the watch, but they fall far short of Google’s own apps. This watch would be a hands down 5 star device if Google apps ran natively on it.- The other issue I have occasionally had is the watch recognizing I am looking at it and turning the screen on (this is with Always On turned off). I don’t know if it the way I hold my arm, wrist, or something else I’m doing wrong; but from time to time I have to hit a button or spin the bezel to turn on the screen.Overall I’m very impressed with the watch. Feel free to ask any questions or leave any comments.

    Awesome watch poor fitness tracking

Love this watch. It looks like a real watch and has 100’s of watch faces you can use, many are free.Fitness tracking is bad but that isn’t what I was looking for so I still give it 4 StarsThe Good:• Send and receive calls, texts and emails. Works great, don’t have to keep pulling my phone out to check stuff.• Good battery life for me. I can get 3 days with the screen not set to always on. With always on screen about 2 days. With Powersaver on you can get around 4 days• Motion activation for the screen works 90% of the time. Sometimes you have to turn your hand back towards you again to get the screen on. Sensitivity can be adjusted in the settings• Uses standard watch bands. I got a black metal band for dress. Looks great but fitness tracking is worse since it’s not as tight to your wrist.• I can set what apps send messages to the watch and read full texts and emails. Facebook and twitter notifications can be read. This is really cool!• I can make and receive calls. Works pretty good overall but in a loud room it’s not as useful• I can put my phone in a locker (S8+) and walk around the gym still connected and getting messages from my phone as well as controlling my music. I use podcasts and iheartradio through it.• Encourages you to get moving if you have been inactive or a period of time. You can turn this off or adjust the times but I like the feature. The Bad:• If you’re looking for a fitness tracker I would suggest looking elsewhere.• The stair tracker is awful. For me I have to have my arms straight down at my sides and slowly walk up a flight of stairs to get it to register. I never walk upstairs like that so it doesn’t track anything for me. I went to a concert at an arena and sat in the rafters and it didn’t track one flight of stairs. BS!• The Heart Rate sensor always tells me to clean off the sensor. I have it tight to my wrist and it fails half of the time to give me anything useful.• Sleep tracker has never successfully tracked a night of sleep for me. Haven’t really investigated this issue much. Sleeping with this watch on is not comfortable. It’s big and bulky and the screen would randomly turn on during the night and wake me up. You can turn it off in the settings but who thinks to do that every time you go to bed?• The Step counter is about as useful and any other. I think they are all inaccurate so not really an issue for me• Calorie counter seems as good as any other although if the heart rate sensor is inaccurate I can’t imagine this is.Conclusion:Overall I love the watch, just wish they would get the Fitness software to work better. I would give it a 5 without question.

Watch is truly amazing, but how can the app options be so bad?

I had been a Pebble watch user from the beginning, but when they sold to Fitbit, I wanted something different. The things I loved about Pebble (always on screen, multi-day battery life, interchangeable bands, ability to design my own watch face) were musts. This watch does those things well. I used the GearWatchDesigner to build my own watch faces that I can run on the watch depending on which of my favorite sports teams are playing that day. If I take it off the charger in the morning and leave the screen always-on it has 55% battery left 24 hours later. I sleep with the watch on for the sleep tracking and then charge it back to close to 100% in the hour it takes me to get ready in the morning. But, I should be able to go 2 days without a charge if I wanted. Not as good as the 4 I could do with Pebble, but pretty good! I change my watch band every day to match the color of the watch face I am running that day, and the old 22mm bands from my Pebble work with this watch!New features that I love: paying at ANY credit card reader with Samsung Pay is spectacular, having multiple great ways to respond to texts on my wrist without pulling out my phone, being able to see text conversations on the watch that look just like they do in my phone text app (including seeing texted photos), making calls on my wrist is great and people can’t tell I’m not talking through my phone! The only complaint I have is the number of apps available is truly heartbreaking. Even on my Pebble there was an app to let me read my twitter feed and the ESPN app let me see scores from any game going on. On the Gear there is no twitter option that I can find and the ESPN app is HORRIBLE, only letting you see scores from teams you have “favorited” and you have to pull your phone out to even start that ESPN app. This is ridiculously bad. How can there not be a sports score app on a smartwatch? There is some great options for using your watch as a phone camera remote on which you can even see yourself on your watch from your phone camera to line up pics and videos, which is very cool.Amazing watch, but they HAVE to get more developers designing useful apps. Little tiny Pebble did a thousand times better job in the app department.

    Great Smartwatch

This is a pretty cool smartwatch. I love that it looks like a watch (i.e. is round). Someone looking at your wrist from afar would just assume that you’re wearing a chronograph watch or a sports watch. Its barely bigger than the Movado Series 800 chronograph that I used to wear. The rotating bezel is an example of great user interface design. I can quickly navigate through the widgets and apps. The abttery life is very good, I get close to 3 days of normal use.People complain about the lack of Samsung apps, but what apps are really missing? Are you going to watch YouTube on a screen that is less than 2 inches wide? Are you going to be surfing the web on such a small screen? Or send out tweet after tweet? If you need to send a lengthy response to a text message, would you really want to do that on a watch? You can with the Gear S3 but it seems that you’d more likely pull out your phone to o that. So given the concept of using the proper tool for the proper task, what’s actually missing? There’s an endless selection of watchfaces, you have weather, reminders, alarms, access to your contacts, your texts, your email, and your calendar, You can use Samsung Pay with your watch. Samsung’s fitness tools such as a step counter, heartbeat monitor, floor counter. You have access to the Samsung Health app with all of its workouts. You have an Altimeter and Barometer. There’s a maps app, though I don’t see myself trying too use a map on a screen this small. You can store pictures, and music on the watch. You can leave your phone in a different room and still be connected to the watch as long as they’re both connected to the same network. The Always On Display is neat if you want to always see a watchface so that it looks like you’re wearing a regular watch. Though the AOD versions of some of the watchfaces are not that great looking. Some things don’t work perfectly. For instance, the “Floors” counter often does not count flights of stairs that I’ve walked up. The Altimeter is probably a little off. When the watch reminds you to get active and suggest an activity (like a Torso Twist), it doesn’t always notice that you’ve started the suggested activity. I haven’t gone through all of the workouts that the phone has available to it, so I can’t speak to how accurate the watch records them.

    Great Smart Watch!

Bought these through Amazon on May 6, 2018. So have had them now for over a year.So far I love the Gear! Changed the band to the V-Moro and it looks much better! The stock rubber watch band just didn’t do the S3 justice. Before purchasing the S3, I did read reviews and went and physically checked them out at Best Buy.I love a good watch and for the last 20+ years have worn a Tissot, Movado Museum piece, Seiko. This is my 1st smart watch and is now my favorite time piece!I remember having to physically constantly changing the date/time on my watches in the past (Due to daylight savings, different days in each month, etc.). Now the S3 takes care of all that and more! Some review highlights:1. Change the band, the V-Moro is solid (I’ll write a separate review for the band)2. Battery life is good! Will last an entire day, and I use the setting always on. If you do go with always on, you’ll need to put it on the charger each night, so I don’t sleep with mine on.3. Downloadable different watch faces: Love some of the choices for different watch faces! Went with one that is a beautiful blue Earth rotating quickly, it was like a $2.00 download and has been my favorite face.4. Smart Watch features: A plethora! Like the heart rate monitor, the step tracker, weather updates, ALL of it! Too much to list.5. It’s now July 25, Thursday, 2019. I wear my S3 Everyday to the Gym (Workout about 5 days a week), to work (High Paced Restaurant Work) and just when relaxing. Being in a restaurant, I wash my hands ALOT, like every 10 minutes (Depending on how busy we are). So far the Water resistant feature is holding up just fine!Anyway you’ll be pleased with this stylish watch (After changing the band)!!Update: August 12th, 2020.Over 2 years of daily use, take this to the gym all the time. Washing regularly with soap and water will insure the bevel and buttons work as they should. They will get gummed up over time if you don’t clean.Still my favorite watch that I have ever owned, and I love nice watches!

    Great Compliment To My Smartphone

I ordered the Gear S3 Frontier Bluetooth model since my carrier (Sprint) does not offer the LTE version. I think it’s just as well because I can’t think of too many situations where I would be leaving my phone behind and just take the watch, so it would be a $10 monthly data plan not really fully used.As a companion to my smartphone it fulfills what I want a smart watch to do beautifully. First of all, it looks great! Very sleek, nice finish and color. Build quality is excellent… top notch in fact. One of the things I kept hearing about as I looked around the internet for info on the watch, was the size. So many people were warning and complaining that this watch is too big. I have very small wrists and since It was hard to get a real sense of the size of the watch online, I was very concerned that it would be too big on my wrist. I kept hesitating to get it, but the look and features just compelled me to take a chance and see if I could pull off wearing it. I AM SO GLAD I GOT IT! The watch is big, but not at all too big to wear. It’s even smaller than my Casio G-Shock DW-6900MF. I like my G-Shock watch because I can wear it no matter what outdoor activity I’m doing, but it’s only a casual watch, and besides, I always wanted the watch to do more than just tell time. Well, the Gear S3 Frontier takes care of that magnificently. My two favorite features are first; Samsung Pay, which works just about anywhere you can swipe a card. That feature alone makes me wear this watch everywhere. Second favorite feature is getting notifications I can glance at without having to take my phone out of my pocket. Especially since I think it’s rude to be fiddling with your phone when at a party or social gathering. IT’S RUDE, PEOPLE!The other features are just icing on the cake… S-Health, Workout and Sleep Tracking, Texting, and even showing off by Making and Receiving calls without pulling out my phone. Finally, customizing the look and feel of the watch by swapping out bands and watch faces is phenomenal. You can make it sporty and work out with it or you can dress it up by putting on a leather or metal band and take it into a meeting. Bye Bye G-Shock!This is an awesome smart watch. The only small con is the price. I think it’s a little expensive. The Bluetooth version should be less than the LTE, in my opinion.I definitely recommend this smart watch.

4 (Mostly) Solid Years of Service

Let’s cut to the chase here.I have put this watch under 4 years of abuse, and it has been a pretty good experience with a few hiccups. I’m only going to touch on the things that stand out the most to me.Durability: (Excellent)I work a very physical job where I’m occasionally banging my hands off of hard objects (hard plastic, steel, glass). Before the Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ finally cracked, I wore this watch for nearly 9,500 hours at my job alone. This is my first smartwatch, so I have nothing else to compare it to, but I’m blown away by the durability.Features/Apps: (Good)In 4 years, I haven’t utilized most of the features and apps. I really only used it to check the time, weather, and to make my music/audiobook-listening experience more streamlined, which it does well. Any sleep, fitness, or miscellaneous apps, I can’t comment on.Battery Life: (8+ Hours)This is where there have been some hiccups, but it seems like most of the problems have been software-based rather than the physical battery itself. After about a year of ownership, the battery would drain rapidly, but updates would sometimes fix that problem. Battery life has been pretty good for the past year of ownership though; 10 hours on average with moderate/heavy use. Conclusion: (Recommended)I would buy it again, but I feel like there are/will be better options for a similar or cheaper price than when I bought the watch in 2017. If you’re not a watch power-user, have a physical job/lifestyle, and don’t care about having the latest-greatest tech, you are going to appreciate this watch.

Not perfect but the best smartwatch I’ve owned.

I am a farmer and my hands are often full. So it is nice to see who is calling and my notifications at a glance. I owned the Asus Zenwatch 2 before this and it did well to suit my needs. Except in 3 areas. First, it did poorly in full sun. Second, it would not always respond when I flicked my wrist to see my notifications. And last was the charging game, it’s charging…no it’s not…yes it is…no it’s not.I tried the Gear S2 and frankly hated it. The design was too small for me and there was no way the bezel would work with heavy gloves. The S3 is just right. It is a good looking watch that can go from casual to more dressy with a simple change of a non-proprietary band. I have the brightness set to full and I can see the display with no problem in full daylight. (check box number one) The wireless charger is awesome. I just place the watch on the charger each night and done deal. (check box number 3) I have around 30% left after 16 hours. So that’s two out of three so far. The S3 will not respond when I flick my wrist sometimes, I just rotate the bezel then. While not perfect I can live with it. I have the watch set to “always on” but to turn off the display if I take it off and lay it down. Sometimes the watch gets confused and turns off while on my wrist and I have to give it a good flick or rotate the bezel to wake. And it is hit or miss on taking my pulse. Last. it will often mistake my daily work activities as working out.

Great watch but not on an iPhone.

Let me start by saying that I returned this watch 2 weeks after getting it so why did I give it 4 stars?I bought the S3 because, unlike the Apple Watch, it looks like a real watch. I was excited that they now had a companion app that works on an iPhone. The watch is very good looking, it is a bit big but I like big watches and it felt nice on my wrist. Using the bezel as an interface is great. It really works and makes sense. All of the standard functions worked really well. I really wanted to like it.Downloading new watch faces worked very well. I like the array of faces available and there are always new watch faces being made.Where things fell apart for me wash the integration to my iPhone. The app would loose connection for no reason and not reconnect. Some combination or turning off Bluetooth and Bluetooth LE on the phone, the watch or both would fix the connection. One time it did not and I had to hard reset the watch and lost all my data. Yes, afterwards I learned I could have backed it up but we are only talking 3 days of steps. The main reason to have a smart watch is to see text, emails and other messages at a glance on your wrist. With the connection failing I would get messages 50% of the time.I tried to download apps to the watch. The list of apps was very limited and half of them would not download. The few that downloaded did not work or barely worked. Yelp downloaded but crashed. Twitter was a general Twitter feed, no way for you to login and see your feed.I wanted to like the watch and I did like the watch. If the connection was rock sold and I could reliably get my messages on the watch I probably could have overlooked the lack of apps and kept it. They are on to something here. Hopefully it works better with a Samsung phone. I understand that Apple is not giving Samsung the access they need to make it work really well on the iPhone but I have an iPhone.I bought an Apple Watch and it works much better with my iPhone. Many apps and so far, they all work. Totally different experience. I don’t like the way the Apple Watch looks. It does not look like a watch, it looks like a mini computer on my wrist but it works.Hopefully Samsung will continue to improve their watch. I will definitely keep an eye on it and look at it again in the future.

GPS does NOT work in standalone mode (Updated: it does work!)

    — Update:Finally, after a lot of trial and error, I figured it out. The built-in GPS does work standalone but requires a counterintuitive setup: you have to turn OFF Bluetooth *and* you have to turn OFF Wifi to make the built-in GPS kick in. I have no idea why Samsung would make it work like this but they did.ps. I have now revised my review rating upwards.—- Original review follows:Let me begin by saying this is a very good looking watch with lots of very useful capabilities. The heart rate system is spot on (tested it side by side with my Fitbit Charge HR while sitting, walking around, and during a long run) but needs a snug fit otherwise it cannot ‘read’ your pulse. For me, the biggest problem is that, despite the claims of the Amazon product page and the claims of Samsung’s own product page, this iteration of the watch cannot provide GPS information when it is standalone. Yesterday, I ran an errand for 1.5 hours outside, in very wide streets with unobstructed views of the sky and no clouds and the S3 could simply not lock onto the GPS. It kept on trying to connect only to time out. And the S3 was not covered by clothing or anything like that.I thought that the problem was with my own watch – I suspected a defective copy of the device – but a little search around Samsung-related newsgroups showed that a lot of people have been reporting this problem in the last 1-2 months. Lack of standalone GPS defeats the purpose (not to mention that it contradicts the stated claims).I am curious to see if / when Samsung will address the S3’s GPS problem.

Best you can get right now!

This is the best smartwatch out right now for Android. I own a few smartwatches and researched others heavily and the Gear S3 has won hands down. I went with the Frontier over the classic for my preference. The watches I compared were the Nixon and the Casio Android Wear versions. I am just not liking the Android Wear interface. The display is amazing and the GPS is working great. The apps are sparse but I get what I need for a smartwatch. There is a ton of watch faces that are very useful for whatever you are doing. Especially if you are active. I use one watch face that seems to be geared just for my cycling that opens up a map from the watch face, very useful. Other watch faces are great for everything from step counts, stairs climb, running, cycling, and sleep tracking. They all seem pretty accurate and are tied into SHealth on your phone. The biggest con is SVoice but it does the job, but in a slow fashion. Everything else speedy and easy to get to from your wrist. The watch looks great and is on the big side. The gear S2 is smaller and a great watch also that is smaller that lacks little compared to S3. My wife stole my S2 (it replaced her pebble time)on day 1 of me receiving the S3. But, the S2 looks good on her compared to S3. However, the S3 Frontier was not at all bad looking on her. I purchased two leather bands that look great, and use the silicon strap for workouts and cycling. The supplied silicone strap is comfortable even while sweating. The star is the rotating bezel that makes navigating through the watch the best way right now with smart watches. My Apple friends are in awe. Not taking anything away from Apples crown which is second behind the S3 rotating bezel. The co-star is the display of this watch which is brilliant and out standing in all lighting situations. I have yet had a problem seeing the screen with right watch face in the sunlight.

    Truly Smart Watch

I’ve got a lot of Samsung tech, so I may be slightly biased towards their stuff. I got this watch replace my Samsung Gear S, I think one of the first generation of smart watches. Basically, that was a extension of the phone. I could answer calls, but neither hear nor talk to the person. This watch has a built in speaker and microphone, so I’ve actually heard people talk on the watch, although I still haven’t confirmed that it actually works as a second phone – Dick Tracy style (or James Bond, depending on which one you remember). This watch charges very quickly on the charging pad, and holds its change too. I’ve lefty it out for three days, it still had 16% left. On an average day, the charge goes to about 80% on a full charge. The weather functions are an impressive upgrade, although I haven’t verified the accuracy of the tools. It appears that some of the tools – altimeter, barometer among them – need a reference to be really effective, but i haven’t tested that yet. It looks pretty accurate compared to available data even without the reference. The health functions are amazing – not only does this watch measure heartbeats accurately and frequently, it does a fair job predicting your current activity – walking, running, biking. I haven’t tried swimming with it yet, but I think that’s an option – I wouldn’t do it without some protection however. The one annoying part of this is that it will prompt you (unless you change the notification settings) to start walking if you’re stationary for a long time – not exactly a good idea of you’re sitting in a meeting. It will also buzz if you’re walking around at work, just a casual reminder that you’re also exercising. As a timekeeper, it’s pretty good. Oddly, with all of the fancy apps on this thing (you can download more through the gear os on your phone), a good free chronometer is hard to find. Nonetheless, it does its primary job very competently.I’m hopeful that with updates, this watch will keep getting better and smarter.

    Holy Smart Watch, Batman

Holy Smart Watch, Batman. Are you kidding me? The Android train, flush and fueled by success, got slogged down in the watch arena. Probably because every company known to God decided to nail an accelerometer to a watch band and call it a smart watch.Samsung (wisely) decided to fight against the stock Android crowd and double-down on it’s Tizen OS for the use in the Gear 3. It’s superb. Superb. This watch takes your breath away. It is durable, beautiful, and extremely useful. The rotating bezel is genius. The watch faces choices make your head spin. The operating system is smooth and the operation is simple. Samsung Pay and S Health work flawlessly. Battery life is shockingly efficient. No, you can’t get your boarding pass on it. Or collect moon dust. Or manufacture Wheaties from your the Whole Grain App. That is what your smartphone is for. The Gear S3 Frontier has it’s own ample set of apps that are more than enough for a watch. I know you can get a lot more apps on the Apple Watch or Android Wear. But honestly. Please–It’s a watch, folks. The Gear S3 can make calls, play music, control your music, read texts, send texts, get weather, measure your heartbeat, measure your sleep, measure your steps, automatically track workouts, pay for stuff, set alarms, set timers, set stopwatch, check your email, see your contacts, check your calendar, look at pictures, read the news, check your altitude and check the barometric pressure. And oh, I almost forgot–tell the time. What else do you need it to do?If you have a Samsung 8 series of phones, this watch is a MUST HAVE accessory. If I could do it all over again, I would have bought this the day after I picked up the Note 8. Just a stunning piece of tech. A top five electronic purchase in my lifetime, for sure.

    Disappointment

Standalone versionA serious upgrade of my review from 6 months ago. I may well have kept me healthy. I mentioned in the original review that it was ot accurately measuring my pulse. I had a return to Samsung to fix the problem. I decided not to do that and kept wearing the watch. Turns out the heart rate that was about twice normal was real. Something known as atrial flutter. Which was fixed today. The watch is certainly worth what I paid for it. Love the SHealth function. Now.The SHealth feature is ok if you want to track steps, walking time and maybe running time and distance. The GPS is pretty much useless. Even though the Samsung webpage says “Whether you’re running, hiking or checking into your favorite brunch spot, the Gear S3’s built-in GPS helps you stay on the map.1” It won’t keep you an any map, but will track, in Runnng, on SHealth about where on a map you went. Although used in the add, samsung appears to have no intention of this device being used to keep anyone on a map. Google maps will do that on my Galaxy phone. It doesn’t track walking up stairs very well. The altimeter is off and while I’m not moving will vary by several feet. The watch gave me a little excitement when I received it because it thought my resting pulse rate was twice normal, and so did my phone, it was about twice the pulse I counted the old fashioned way.Samsung community and tech support hasn’t been much help. It took them a while to come around to admitting that there was nothing the watch would do to help me stay on the map.I’m very disappointed with the cost versus lack of features and would strongly recommend anyone thinking of purchasing one of these to look at the much less expensive, better alternatives.

    Love it

Ever since I was a kid watching Dick Tracy, I wanted a ‘wrist radio”. This is so much better. :-)I have a Samsung phone, so compatibility is seamless. It is the perfect companion to a smart phone allowing me to access all the functions I have chosen directly from my watch. I don’t play games from the watch, so the limited games available was of no difference to me. I can play any I want from my phone or my tablet already. But: Events, calendar, to do, music player, alarm clock and fitness apps are a few I have chosen and there are plenty more available.Making a phone call through the watch (I don’t have the sim card version) linked via bluetooth to my phone was very clear. Recipients couldn’t tell I was calling from the watch. And for me, it was the culmination of a childhood dream. (Come in Dick Tracy, 🙂 The mic works great, normal speaking levels were heard just fine. Music also sounds surprisingly good when you consider how small the speaker is.Another feature that I really like is Samsung Pay. After adding a debit or credit card, one touch brings up Samsung pay, which allows you to skip a couple of steps during check out at the store and looks very futuristic to everyone else in line. I always get amazed comments. Also very handy is the emergency call feature. Set it up with up to four phone numbers (I used 911 and my son as my numbers) and add an emergency message. If you have an emergency (like you’ve dropped and can’t get up) hit the bottom button three times and if you do not stop it in five seconds, the watch will send your emergency message and your GPS coordinates to your chosen contacts automatically. All in all I am very pleased with my purchase. If you own a Samsung Phone, it’s really almost a “no-brainer” to buy THIS watch. You’ll be glad you did.

    Pixel XL S3 user

I’ve had this watch for about a week. Using with the Pixel XL. I have to say this watch is the coolest piece of tech I’ve ever owned. All of its features run incredibly smooth, the rotating bezel is so much easier than trying to swipe and zoom on a tiny screen, and being able to shower without taking it off is amazing. Battery life is insane too. I have gotten 3 days with light use and about 30% left when I finally charged. However, I have my screen always OFF and rotate the bezel a click to wake it up. The rotate wrist to wake feature is just annoying in my opinion because most of the time you aren’t actually trying to look at your wrist so you waste a lot of battery. Also when trying to sleep it comes on constantly. Here’s what I’m a little disappointed in so far:Watch faces – literally hundreds to choose from but they’re all kind of junk (unless you pay for them. $1-2). Up close the classy chronometers look pixelated and fake. My absolute favorite face is a super simple black and white digital.Lots of pre-loaded crap – the phone claims to have 4 gigs of storage but with all the pre-loaded crap you actually only have about 2.5. Most of which can’t be erased. No pre-downloaded stopwatch or timer?! That’s just silly…ITS A WATCH! you have to download them. Not too big a deal, they’re free, but still… Its a watch! Also, the Samsung gear app is ABOMINAL! Clunky confusing and poorly laid out. After owning iphones and now the pixel I’m used to super simple; which this app is not. It is awful. That’s it for the negative so far. It really is an amazing watch. I have gotten TONS of compliments and I’ve probably made several sales for Samsung (you’re welcome). They did a great job on this thing. Happy with purchase for sure.

    I love this watch

I love this watch. I got it for an anniversary present. I had been hinting that I wanted it for a couple of months and sure enough I got it. I have to say it has a lot of features that I do not use. I have a hard time hearing my phone ring or even vibrating when it is in my pocket. My wife would say ” Honey your phone is ringing” and I cant hear it. ( Slight hearing problem on my end) SO I thought let me try this watch to see if the vibration helps. I love it. When I am driving ( older car with no blue tooth) I can have the music on and not miss a call. I don’t talk and drive but I can see if it is the school for my children and pull over. I like how it tracks my walking. I have walked several steps and counted then seen how close the watch was. It is within 1 or 2 steps every time. I don’t mean walking 10 steps, I have counted out over a 100 many times to compare. It is very accurate for me. I love the track my sleep function. I Know it isn’t going to be as accurate as a $5000 sleep study but it gives me good information. The making calls from your watch and receiving calls works well. I can hear who I am talking to and they hear me just fine. Another great feature is if you get too far from your phone it vibrates once and lets you know. Saved me a couple of tie from leaving my phone in my desk at the end of the day. Overall great watch. We got it for just under $300 and was well worth it.

From awesome to garbage in just one update. (Update below – back to awesome!)

This little watch was awesome when I got it as a birthday gift from my wife. I didn’t really think I’d care much for a smartwatch, having always worn an analog watch through my adult life. But after I received it and was able to change the watch faces – how cool is that? Okay, what else can this little thing do? Well, it can measure your heartbeat – neat – oh wait, it can track my steps too? Okay – so now I can see if I’ve been a lazy fat butt. Now it’s telling me I’m really lazy and should do a torso twist. Thanks, but I’m in the middle of an important meeting with a customer. I’m sure they’d appreciate it if I did a “torso twist” in the middle of our meeting because my watch said to. So what else – there’s some apps out there, you can get navigation, which sounds neat but the reality is, I’m over 40 and can’t see up close that great when I’m wearing my contacts. Last thing I need to be doing while driving is squinting to look at my watch for directions. Then there’s weather, and the fact that I can do the Dick Tracy thing (call someone or receive a call) on my watch. (If you don’t know who Dick Tracy is, Google it.) That’s come in handy several times. I’m able to text (though if you’re a long-time user of Google Voice like I am, it will use your paired device’s number to send/reply with and not your GV number.) Wish there was a GV app for this! There’s a weather app in case you don’t go outside (why do you care about the weather if you’re only inside? Go look out a window already!) I even found a nifty Powerpoint app that I can link my watch to my laptop and use it as a remote. That is, until the watch goes to sleep in the middle of a slideshow. Everything in the Tizen OS seems to be nice and fast, no lagging at all. Keep in mind, this is not a Google or Android OS, it’s Samsung’s proprietary OS, they have their own apps for it, and the app store is somewhat lacking in my opinion. I wanted a simple stock ticker but apparently to do that, you have to have a constantly-on connection with your phone to receive updates as well as a separate app on your phone.I kept getting this popup on the watch when I’d hit he buttons wrong – “Try Samsung Pay!” Finally, I broke down and decided to give it a try. I read up on the whole “LoopPay” setup and realized – this could actually be kinda cool! I setup a couple of cards in the system and decided to give it a shot at a few places while on a business trip. The area I was in was very tech saavy so most places had Near Field Communications (NFC) POS terminals. Beep! Payment accepted. Whoa. This is cool! Then, back to where I live – out in the country where some merchants still take checks. I nervously walked up to the POS terminal – everything I read says this should work. No NFC tap-type POS terminal here, just an older swipe terminal. Alright, deep breath – look for the mag-stripe read heads, hover the watch over it – BEEP – payment accepted. The clerk gives me this WTF look and said “is that Apple Pay?? I didn’t think we could do that!” Then I have to explain to them, no, it’s a special watch that can do this pretty much anywhere because it emulates a card swipe. The looks I get when I do this at these rinky-dink out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere merchants are priceless. Everything from the hair-grabbing “ER MEH GERD!” to open-mouthed googly-eyes. Once in a while I get someone giving me that skeptical “are you trying to hack us?” look, but it’s extremely rare. I will warn you, if you use it at Wal-Mart they think you’re using their Wal-Mart pay thing. So now you’re thinking – okay, this actually sounds pretty darn cool – why the heck did you give it one star? Sometime early in 2018, they issued out new firmware. Being that I keep my equipment updated, I went ahead and did it. (After all, it does nag you to do it all the time anyway.) I had no indication that this could be problematic. Update done. Supposed to “fix battery problems” they said. Wait, I was getting a whole day out of my watch, now I’m getting maybe 3-4 hours? That didn’t fix anything, it made it worse! Well at least the Samsung Pay thing is pretty cool. That is, now the update causes the whole watch to completely shut down after I use Samsung Pay. I have to start it back up. This goes on for several weeks and I realize – the update has completely hosed my really cool watch. So I read up and sure enough, LOTS of people are complaining about this update. Not just a handful, but a LOT. Check YouTube. Okay, so what can I do to see if I can fix it? Reset it, everyone says – as a troubleshooting measure. Nice, now all my settings are gone (note to myself and others – you CAN backup your settings so you don’t lose them through the phone app!) Still, no dice. Watch still has horrible battery life, yet when I put it on the charger it says 95% after it dies? I called Samsung support and they didn’t even question me other than asking if I had tried resetting it. They didn’t even flinch – here’s your ticket number and a UPS label to send it back. Today, I tried to turn it on, and can’t even get it to turn on after being on the charger all night. Today it goes to UPS and off to a “repair center” for 9-11 business days. I’ll update this review once I get it back and have it for a week or two to see if it’s fixed.Update 6/22/2018 – I received the watch back, even though it was out of warranty they apparently opted to fix it for free since the update apparently caused the issue. They had it back to me within their 9-11 days easily so it wasn’t gone too long. So far it’s functioning like it used to before the update and I’m enjoying it again! Of course it was reset when I received it so I had to set everything up again, but while it was gone I discovered Samsung has a watch face designer where I was able to import a watch design I liked into the watch from a website.I also bought a Fossil Q gen 3 watch while this one was out for repair and while it’s fairly nice, it doesn’t even compare to this one. Lots more features and I still really like the ability to use Samsung Pay directly on the watch. (Lots of my local haunts know me as the guy that pays with his watch.)

A solid watch at an elevated price.

The Gear S3 Frontier is a pretty good watch. You likely have already read other reviews, so I’ll just toss on my two pennies perspective only.Heft: Yes. It is a large watch. It is large to accommodate a larger battery. It is a metal body. Both add weight to it. But I personally don’t mind the weight. Somehow it makes it feel like a quality device. There are two core version of this watch (and the two style differences not covered here, you likely already know about them). the two versions are: Normal smart watch, and smart watch with LTE built in. Yes, the second version is a cell phone. It even has a speaker and microphone in it so you could make speaker phone calls. I do not have that version. But the first version has the same speaker and microphone built in. You can use as a speaker phone with the phone you have it connected to. Still a wee bit tinny, but servicable. Best used in a quieter room.Because each has the speaker, you can also play music from it. It comes with a music app that can control the music play on your phone, or be switched to play music from your watch. The watch has roughly 2.5 gigs of storage in it, so it can hold a good amount of music. The watch will pair with bluetooth headphones or bluetooth speakers. So you can get a better sounds quality from those if you desire. I play from my watch when I find myself somewhere where popping my phone out isn’t convenient or desirable. Keep in mind that driving this over bluetooth will eat up battery time faster that if you were just using it as a watch. This is not a large smart phone. This is not a iPhone, nor is it an iWatch. As such, although it does have an ‘app store’ to download apps from, the selection is very small and a lot of the store is devoted to more watch faces. So don’t go in thinking you are going to be downloading a lot of really cool stuff. There are a couple keepers in there, but it should not be your driving motivation. **Note: as I state below, I use it with an iPhone and as such the app store may be reduced below what Android users might see to only show applications that work with the restrictive iPhone or have no phone needs at all.Battery life: I see about two days out of mine. I use the vibration feature for alerts and alarms. I do not use the ‘always on’ display. I don’t use many apps or play games on it. I do let it turn on when I lift my arm to read it. It turns off again when I lower my arm. So you may see battery life around or less than this. However, if you go to extremes and turn off bluetooth, set the display to turn on only if you push a button, use a simple black and white clock face, then you may actually be able to hit the marketing statement of 4 days battery life. Of course, why did you buy it then in the first place?Charging it is from an induction charger you just set the watch on.No tiny plug in cables to plug in, but sit it on the charger. If you shower daily, that is a great time to put a little more charge in the battery because you don’t need it right then. I tend to take about 20 plus minutes from getting up to ready to put it back on. That will usually bring it from 70% to 95%. Maybe a bit less. More than enough to go through the day.As noted above, it comes in a cell phone version. If you use a smart phone, you are using a device with a high theft rate. You should be using a lock code that you have to type in to unlock it for use. This watch has that too. You can set in a code and then if you take the watch off, it automatically locks (side effect of having a heart rate monitor built in (which does work). You try and use it, you have to key in the code. You put it back on and you have to unlock it. Someone steals it, it will be useless to them without the code. Both models have this feature since it is just part of the shared operating system they have. However, entering a code is a bit fiddly. It is a very small numeric keypad. if you have really pudgy fingers, then it might be a pain point. You don’t have to use it. But it is nice as a security point.I happen to use mine with an iPhone. I have been drooling over this watch for some time but it was not compatible with my locked-in-a-contract phone. Finally Samsung released an iPhone app so you could use it and they can expand their customer base. The core features are there.Advanced abilities you might get from pairing it with an Android phone are not there since Apple is blocking some phone access features from it as a competitor. But it does the core things I want which are tell time, control my music, receive notifications from the phone, and act as an alarm clock. Of all of that, the only thing the phone is doing is providing notifications. Any app that can use the iPhone’s notifications to show you information will work with this. The watch can also get GPS data from your phone, but also has its own GPS functionality built in. The built in GPS works, but is a battery consumer. There is no built in MAPS application to use it, but runners could track their path and speed and use that in some other program later. I don’t so I do not know if its of much use. I do have a little app that shows your current speed of travel. In the car it does read correctly but has a wee bit of lag in speed changes. It is a simple way to see if your car is reading the correct speed on your speedometer. The watch can also read your phone contacts list, and even let you dial your phone from the watch from those or a numeric keypad. This is another side effect of having an alternate version that is also a phone. It’s a nice watch with an elevated price tag. Like 90% of smart watches out there, it has relatively lack luster battery life. Few out there will ever come close to the legendary battery life of a (now defunct) Pebble watch. Other makers will exceed that level with massive trade-offs in performance and display technology. So you are not buying this for battery life. But… This thing’s battery life is far better than an iWatch when set at the same performance levels. And if you own an Android (or Samsung) phone then its features may increase above the core features that I get using it with an iPhone.

    Somewhere Between Dumbwatch and Smartphone

First and foremost, this is supposed to be a WATCH. That means this thing’s main job is to tell TIME… But since we’re also calling it a “SMARTwatch”, shouldn’t it at LEAST be able do everything the best “DUMBwatch” can do?******************I FORGOT… WHAT’S A WATCH, AGAIN?Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s start with the basics — the features that make a great watch. There are several optional features available in traditional watches and if this one’s going to be SMARTER than average, I believe it should have MOST of these features straight out of the box.A smartwatch should have (and prioritize) the following basic functions:1. A full-featured Chronograph. Currently, the stopwatch feature only exists as a widget on the default watch face, rather than as a standalone watch mode. This means that if you customize the watch face, you’ll lose your stopwatch.2. A Timer. There should be a standalone mode to sound an alarm after a desired number of minutes pass. Currently, there is no built-in timer on the watch.3. An Alarm. You should be able to efficiently set at least one alarm that will sound/vibrate at a specified time of day or week.4. A World Clock. There should be a simple ability to switch between home time zone and a minimum of 2 other saved locales. Consider allowing a GMT hand/time.Currently these key functions either don’t exist at all on the watch or are separate apps that are not grouped in any logical fashion. (Currently there is an Alarm and a World Clock app but I believe they should be grouped logically and accessed more conveniently than any of the watch’s “smart” features.)SIDENOTE: I currently own a Citizen WR100 that can do all of the aforementioned. It was made like… 30 years ago and manages all these functions without the benefit of a CPU, RAM, or touch screens.Despite the incredible advancements in technology since the manufacture of that watch, this 3rd generation Samsung “smartwatch” has been designed to perform far FEWER timekeeping functions than my 30-year-old “dumbwatch…”How does that make sense?******************THE WATCH BANDBefore I start on the “smart” watch features, I have to mention the watch band. You should know it’s been reported by a significant number of users that the included silicon watch band causes friction burns; I’ve experienced a bit of it myself. It is also impossible (for me) to make it fit comfortably, as the clasp half of the strap is not long enough to keep the watch face centered on my 7.5″ wrist. The watch includes an optional shorter perforated half, but NOT a longer clasp half, so there’s no way to center the clasp and watch face without over-tightening the band.Although the band is silicone, the watch case is 316L Stainless Steel and appears well-made. Simply put, it should have been paired with a traditional and matching stainless steel band with removable links. Sure, it’s more expensive to produce, but considering the number of people who have experienced discomfort and scarring from wearing the silicon band, it’s far better to begin with a proper steel band and allow customization afterward if desired. If such a band cannot be provided with the watch, a matching band should at least be made available by Samsung for a nominal fee.As of right now, it’s only possible to acquire steel bands from a 3rd party, and only various leather, textile, and silicon bands can be purchased directly from Samsung. These bands have the same dimensions as the included silicon band, however, so if the original band doesn’t fit properly, purchasing ANY replacement band from Samsung will only perpetuate your discomfort.******************SMARTWATCH FEATURESGet ready to think wayyy outside the box…You need to think of this watch as being DUMBER than a normal watch and SMARTER than a flip phone, but never knowing quite enough about watches or phones to do what you really want. At MOST, it’s a wrist-borne relay point between you and your smartphone. It’s like a middle[wo]man that allows you to:1. Send txts or reply to messages from a preset list of allowed apps2. Place and answer phone calls, mute the built-in microphone, and adjust the speaker volume with the bezel. (Perfect.)3. Read notifications (from certain apps)4. Continue playing music you’ve recently started on your phone, adjust the volume, and skip tracks with the bezel. (In my opinion, the bezel should control the volume, not skipping tracks. Who skips that many tracks without seeing the working playlist?)5. Make payments via Samsung Pay6. Et al.It can collect biometrics intermittently for S Health as well, monitoring your steps, heart rate, and sleep efficiency. These features seem to work fairly well, but you may experience some discomfort if you allow the watch to collect heart rate data throughout the day. (The watch can get a bit warm/hot.)******************OOPS…As smart as these features may be, the watch isn’t good at doing ANY of them simultaneously… Btw, that includes telling TIME.[Yes. You read that correctly. Just because you’ve got a watch, you should NOT expect it to tell time… It’s 2018, ok? Things are different now.]If you attempt to switch tasks or lower your arm in the midst of a reply, you are likely to lose your work. That adds up to a LOT of wasted life if you’ve started drafting your txts on a 1.25″ screen…You also cannot switch tasks during certain processes, like:1. Taking phone calls.During a call, a user cannot leave the call screen for any reason. And when I say “not for any reason”, I literally mean that a person wearing this “watch” CANNOT CHECK THE TIME OR DATE, nor can they execute any other function during a call. So by design, the primary purpose of this product can’t be realized while it attempts to be MORE than a basic watch; it literally CEASES to be a watch while you’re taking a call!Did I just buy a broken watch?——————–When I first realized I couldn’t read the time while staring at my $300 watch, I almost said THIS to the person I was talking to:”Excuse me, do you have the time? I really SHOULD have it, but… apparently I don’t.”I couldn’t make my mouth say those ridiculous words, though. Instead, I did what Samsung expected:I used my free hand to pull out my PHONE so I could use it like a WATCH while I talked into my WATCH like a PHONE…——————–Do I really have to explain the magnitude of failure involved here? I hope not, because it HURTS MY BRAIN to even relive that moment. All I’ll say is it’s completely UNACCEPTABLE for such an advanced piece of technology to EVER SUCK THAT HARD.1a. If notifications come in during a call, don’t expect to see them for more than half a second.1b. And… if notifications come in during a call, don’t even HOPE to reply.2. During a workout, you’re stuck with S Health on the screen. If you want to use a different feature or app, you’ve gotta end (not pause) your workout. But hey, at least it’ll flash the time of day real quick when you wake the screen! That immediately makes S Health the best app on the watch!******************BUT WAIT — THERE’S LESSI think any good “smart” device should have strong app support to keep it relevant. Unfortunately, though, this watch lacks support from the major msg-based apps you use on a daily basis, like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, likely owing (in part) to the fact that it is built on the Linux Tizen platform, as opposed to the Android platform developers are already writing for in the Google Play Store. So without standalone apps, it is really difficult [read “impossible”] to respond to and keep track of any non-SMS msg thread. For example…Let’s say you get a notification from Facebook Messenger and catch a glimpse of a truncated msg from your best friend… only to get 3 MORE Messenger notifications at once without time enough to read them all. The notifications disappear as each new msg comes in and you wind up missing so much of the thread that you just let your arm drop… defeated… to your side, as you wrestle out your phone to see WTF YOU JUST MISSED…Sound stressful? Oh good… I’ve described it PERFECTLY.******************THE BOTTOM LINEIt’s basically like this — this device is barely DUMB enough to reliably be a watch. And it’s barely SMART enough to reliably be a smartphone… In truth, it’s neither watch nor smartphone; it’s a clumsy, expensive, half-baked concept that makes this product fall miles behind the standard of quality you’d expect from Samsung.I wish I could say better, because I really love Samsung products. In fact, I enjoy my Galaxy S8 phone so much that I recently got a Samsung NP940X5N laptop, and I love that product too. They’re the best phone and computer I’ve ever had… But I can’t say the same about this watch!

It’s close to everything I want in a smartwatch but not what I was hoping for with battery life so far.

I have had my Gear S3 Frontier for about a week now. Background:I also own the 1st Gen Moto 360 Android Wear smart watch, a Pebble Time Steel watch and plenty of fitness trackers prior to this. I have also owned a few Casio G-shock watches.Observations/Notes:When comparing this watch to my prior experiences, it does offer everything I could hope to have in a modern smartwatch. I really wanted Android Wear 2.0 watches to be the answer and is what I was waiting for but the one thing I could not stand about my prior Android Wear watch and from what all the current Android Wear 2.0 watches also look to have is the terrible 1 day battery life. After using a Pebble Time Steel for the past year, I could not go back to a watch I have to charge every single day. I don’t mind charging every few days though. One of the common points I kept reading about this watch is it gets 4 solid days of battery life and I have yet to see that though with it being a new “toy” I have been playing with it a lot more than I otherwise likely will given more time. The Gear companion app (on Android) is pretty solid. It provides useful stats about what specific items are consuming your watch battery and I was able to early on identify some specific on by default features that I did not actually care to use were large battery consumers.I have had a few issues with activity detection. I was rocking my daughter to sleep and it thought I was using an elliptical, which is somewhat understandable due to the rocking motion but it was not intuitive at all on how to stop it from being in that workout activity. I still do not understand exactly what I did that stopped it but it took me about an hour of trying different things on the watch to stop it from thinking I was still in that activity. It also does not seem to detect when I’m sleeping very well, which is a huge disappointment to me as it’s something I like to track and became used to with my Pebble. I received a week report yesterday that showed a bunch of nice stats and graphs but it only had sleep tracking data for 2 days out of 6. I don’t know why the other days did not track or why the 2 days that did track worked but it’s a big mark against it so far until I can figure out a better way.To this point though, it’s one of the larger pain points of the watch. It’s not very intuitive, there’s really not any kind of walk through demo that shows you how to use everything, even the companion app does not locally store the guides and just loads a webpage FAQ which is pretty lacking and not very comprehensive or accessible in teaching someone who knows nothing about using the watch. I say this as someone with over 20 years in technology and who has used may other gadgets and smartwatches already. This is more typical with Samsung in general though. Their phones are the same, they pack them full of new features but do a terrible job of educating the consumer about them and how to use them. The physical footprint of the watch itself is large, it’s much larger then the Gear S2, which I have worn in the past. It is pretty thick and makes fitting under a long sleeve dress shirt difficult. This is an area the Pebble Steel Time won out at hands down. It looks great though, it’s very classy looking (in my opinion) and it’s easy to switch out the silicone/rubber band with a nicer metal band if you want to dress it up.The navigation is great with the twisting dial, it’s a lot easier to spin than the Gear S2 from my experiences. I do wish there was a way to select something with a physical button though, but there is a bit of a solution you can enable in the settings that will select whatever you are stopped on for a few seconds. This might work for some but I found it more of a pain than just touching the screen to select. I wish the two side buttons were more dynamic though and one would become the select button when twisting the dial and go back to it’s normal functions when inside of an app or menu or when at the name home screen/watch face.Speaker calls and Bluetooth:It’s awesome that the watch has a decent and passable speaker that you can easily take a call and hold a conversation with someone in a mostly quiet room without issue. It’s very “Dick Tracy” feeling and I love it, but I cannot use it sadly as enabling the watch to receive and hold calls using the speaker ties up your phones Bluetooth connection and will not allow it to connect to your cars Bluetooth hands free or a Bluetooth headset to take calls without having to always disconnect the watch phone audio under Bluetooth settings prior to using the other devices each and every time. I wish there was a way to auto-enable the phone audio to the watch based on GPS location or WiFi connection. That would be the perfect solution as I would have it allow calls from the watches speaker whenever I was home but disable it everywhere else. Maybe there’s a way to accomplish something like this with Tasker and is something I will probably play with at some point. I think Samsung’s vision and solution to this is their new upcoming Galaxy S8 which is one of the first phones I’ve seen that does multipoint Bluetooth that will allow it to be connected to two different Bluetooth speakers/systems at the same time. This is a pretty new feature though and not an option on my Nexus 6P sadly. At this point, I plan on keeping it if I can figure out how to get sleep detection working correctly and actually get the 4 days of battery life consistently. If I cannot get either one of these resolved, then I will likely return it and wait longer for something better to come along. I plan on doing an updated review once I have had more time with the watch.

    The perfect (smart) watch!

Jumping from a Moto 360 (first gen) to this… it’s a big jump!I got the international version so it doesn’t have a sim card slot…First the hardware, everyone can agree it’s smooth, amazing and easy to navigate. The software…The steps are counted quite accurately and are not counted while I’m driving. It does sometimes register a few steps while I’m driving but nothing too dramatic.I do like how it reminds me to move when I’m sitting for an hour or more! The floors seem to be counted fine most of the time.I also wear this to sleep, something I thought I couldn’t do but I’ve gotten used to it. So it tracks my sleep and gives me everything from how long I slept for to how much I remained motionless. The problem though…It couldn’t sync with my phone. The app simply wouldn’t install. It wasn’t compatible even though my phone is a lenovo Zuk z2 pro and has 6gb of ram and everything else a high end smartphone would have.I had to go through many forums to find a modified app that would install, and eventually, it did. It keeps disconnecting every now and then though.Remote functions…I like how you can connect to any wifi and be able to receive whatsapp messages and notifications even if your phone isn’t nearby or connected through bluetooth.I don’t know if you can receive calls remotely and answer them with your watch, that would be cool but I don’t think it’s possible. The speakers and microphone…Super clear and basic. The person on the other end could hear me fine and I could hear them. But don’t depend on the voice assistant unless you like to wait 5 minutes for an answer and even then, it’s usually not what you’re looking for lol.Performance…Rarely is there any lags at all.Once a week, there’s a bit of lag randomly but I am sure there’s an explanation for it because it rarely happens. Otherwise, it’s super smooth, unstoppable and doesn’t have any “Android stopped responding” type of errors lol!Everyday wear…I use this for everything. I’m a bodybuilder so I lift weights with this watch on. I don’t have any stored music yet but I think it’s ridiculous how it only has 1.5gb of available space.Even my moto 360 first gen had at least 2gb of free space but I guess it’s the software that takes up all the space.I can wear this on my runs, lifts and sleep. And even if there’s a formal occasion, I can wear this with a nice outfit and still look fashionable.I like how the bands are easily swappable. I have a black band for formal use, and red for everything else.Battery life…Samsung claims 4 days or 3. It barely makes it past 2 days with normal use (always on display, checking steps etc).I’m super happy with the battery life because my old smartwatch (moto 360 1st gen) would only last 6-8 hours if I was lucky.*Recommended fitness app*I’ve tried a few fitness apps now and I think Underarmour Record has the best app for this watch. It’s super efficient and displays what you need to know like distance / constant heart rate measurement/ etc. and you can change the type of workout you’re doing.I heard Underarmour has the best software, but not the best hardware. So this watch goes perfectly with that app. And of course, it syncs with your phone.*App issues*I’m not getting my steps synced into my app, as I mentioned earlier I had to go miles to get a modified app to work on my phone. So I’m not getting my steps, sleep or really anything else synced on my phone. I heard I have to un-sync my watch and reset it and whatnot but I don’t feel like going through the trouble.I’ve already spent a day installing the modified app, and additional apps that this watch requires. It was a tedious process but well worth it as I’m willing to put in the work for this watch. If I could, I would rate this 4.5. I don’t want to knock out a whole star because I think it deserves that half star for the potential and current usefulness.I think this watch has set the bar up high for future smartwatches! If you’re looking for a smartwatch that will last you for a good long time, then this one is the one to get.I heard even Samsung’s next smartwatch won’t look like this, it’ll look more like a “smartwatch” than a regular watch. It’s unfortunate since I got this because it looks like it a watch!I believe this watch should last a solid 5 years as I don’t see myself needing anything special unless the battery life extended to 7 days or something.Too bad there aren’t that many apps to install but I can live with that and don’t need anything special on mine.Overall, this is like a 9.5 out of 10 for me.Did you find my review helpful? So nice, BUT… (don’t let the 3 stars fool you, you will still love it)

I love the watch, but…I was skeptical at first. I do not like the whole recharge thing because battery life is questionable and this means getting a new watch every (enter number here) years instead of just getting a nice watch to last 40+ years. My heart was set on a Marathon WW series watch, but I just cannot afford it so I caved and bought a Suunto Traverse Alpha. I hated it. In order to get notifications you have to have their app always running in the background and it was a terrible experience. I fell in love with the notifications though, which honestly, was not the reason I bought the Suunto in the first place. I wanted a durable and sleek looking semi smart watch with good battery life. I returned it and set my sights on the Gear S3 Frontier. At first, I disliked the step tracker and sHealth app. There is no way to disable it. However, after toying with it for a couple days I figured out how to stop the heart rate monitor and stop all notifications from the sHealth features. It still tracks steps, but it does not kill the battery like before. However, it is still the most used app on battery life regardless of what you do. You could listen to music on your watch, browse photos, take calls, etc etc, and sHealth will still be the number one battery life draining app. The bad part about all this: there is no option to turn the steps monitor or the ‘floors’ monitor off. There is one for the heart rate, but sHealth should be completely user configurable and allow us the options to choose if we want ANY monitoring or not. This is a HUGE flaw in my opinion, and the main reason for the 3 stars.I use a Samsung Galaxy s8, and have the AOD on. With a couple calls per day, random texting, maybe a game for a half hour on my lunch break occasionally, some email and other minimal tasks (after meticulously navigating app/background data/battery settings) I get around 75% at the end of the day. Even with GPS on battery saving mode to connect with my watch face. So I like to use the AOD on my watch too. I think the movement detection and bezel turn to wake up option are very flawed. My shirt sleeve sets the watch on occasionally with the button press option, plus how many times I knock into something would easily turn the watch on with the bezel/movement option. So AOD and button press to activate actually saves battery life. However, the AOD is nothing impressive. It should be exactly like the Galaxy S8/9 phones. But it’s basically just a dimmed version of your watch face without second counting (for most faces). So there could easily be some battery saving if they would adopt the same AOD the phones have. This is the second reason for 3 stars.Battery saving and watch only mode. Terrible. I mean, they are great features, but the watch faces and functions are terrible. However, I expected them to be exactly what they are and have never needed to use either of them on my phone to get good battery life. If the rare occasion presents itself to save serious amounts of battery life, I would be surprised and probably not need to rely on the watch anyways. Basically, the watch faces are what make both these options so terrible. For a digital watch, you would expect to have the date/time/battery life. That is about it. But on battery saving, the step counter are forced on the screen and it is VERY cluttered. Even more so that the stock face I use normally. As for watch only, well, it is just time, and very unresponsive. I would press a button to see the time and wait 5 seconds, still nothing, press it again, a quick flash of time, and then I’d get frustrated and turn the watch back to normal mode. It’s pretty terrible. This is where the phones version of AOD would do great, but Samsung overlooked how simple the K.I.S.S. method is, and a good ol “If it aint broke, don’t fix it” mentality.Overall, I love the watch. Reading a text message on my watch really quickly when I am at a work environment where walking around with your phone in front of your face is seriously frowned upon (as it should be, everywhere including outside of work) this is really nice because I will instantly know if it’s important of something that can wait. When your day to day life consists of hands on work and manual labor tasks, this is also a benefit of being able to keep your phone secure and safe. Bascially this watch reduces the risk of dropping your phone, and help to make notifications discreet, simple, quick and easy. The best thing about this watch in my opinion, is the look and design. Samsung went above and beyond what most smart watches do and made it waterproof, with a black(ish) bezel and a modern simple silicone wrist band. It’s perfect. If they had a flat black version with a bit more rugged display and no bezel turn, that would be cool too. Kind of like their “Active” line of phones… for us military folks and hard working people who get their hands dirty or play even dirtier.I highly recommend this watch. Do not let the 3 stars fool you. The watch is great. However, due to the things I mentioned, they are notable and greatly reduce battery life while limiting user control as well. So that is a very big deal too. I don’t think it is enough to deter the average consumer even the slightest bit, but let’s be honest, the average consumer replaces their equipment regularly because they fail to maintain or understand it.

    Good Value

The watch is really nice. Great value for money. My only complaint is that the strap that came with the watch was not the one in the picture. The strap I received is flimsy and cheap. it lets down an otherwise great product.

I Love This Watch!!! Exceeded my Expectations

I’ve had this watch now for 4 days and the Gear S3 Frontier (non 4G LTE Version) is a great watch so far. It is a beautiful and it does more than I expected. I bought the watch on sale and I am glad I did because I now see that the prices is $100 dollars more than I paid for it.The band that come with the watch is comfortable, but I hate that band style, so I purchased the Solid Stainless Steel Watch Band Link Bracelet Strap that matches the Frontier and that added more style to the watch and it is comfortable too. I thought the watch itself may have been a little too big at first, but after putting it on, it feels nice and it does not look big at all on my wrist..The watch is paired to a Galaxy S7 Edge and the watch linked up nicely and seamlessly with the Samsung Gear app. Through either the watch or the gear app, additional features are easy to install and remove. I use the watch to monitor my sleep, and other bio data, and it seems ok. I measured my heart rate manually with the watch and with the phone and it was accurate. The watch can be set up to also auto measure your heart rate and it updates the info to the phone. Very slick…Calls made and received from the watch are clear and when asked, no one could tell that I was talking through my watch. I can have the watch on my lap when talking and no one complained about talk quality. Text messages and emails are easy to get a quick read. It has a built in GPS and Wi-Fi, and the watch synced to my home network without having to do anything. Samsung Gear stores your Wi-Fi and other information through your Amazon account, and sends it to the watch, so when I am out of bluetooth range, the watch shifts to my home network so if I misplace it in the house, I will be able to locate it through the Gear app.S-Voice works well too as do the other apps I’ve used and I’ve got no complaints with S-Voice yet.As for Battery life, so far I’m getting almost 2 days of battery with moderate to heavy use. Always On Display is disabled, but I use the wrist motion to activate the watch face. I also use the “do not disturb” function and after 10pm (I set that time), the watch does not come on unless I manually activate it with a button. I have not received any calls or text messages in this mode, so I do not know if calls and texts will come through between 10pm and 6am.Samsung Pay works great too. It requires you to set a password since it will have your credit/debit cards stored on the phone, and at first, I did want to have to go through the pain of having to punch in my passcode. However, what I learned is that as long as the watch is on your wrist, you only have to enter the passcode once a day, and I can live with that. I used the watch’s Samsung Pay at Walmart and Macy’s so far with no trouble. It logged my transaction in Samsung Gear and it sends me an alert that my watch was used to purchase something. The watch’s battery is not user accessible, so the only question I have so far is what happens in the next two years or so when the battery begins to lose its ability to hold a charge and needs to be replaced. I haven’t seen any comments about battery replacement solutions yet, but I suspect that there will be more said about that later after the watch has been around for a year or two. The watch comes with a wireless cradle that is great and it charges fairly quickly.I really love this watch! It is full of all kinds of features that I have not yet explored, but I learn something everyday and look forward to the watch’s evolution. I have read a lot of reviews about the watch, and there is a lot of positive feedback out there, but it seems for some, their expectations are a bit high. I see this watch as an extension of my smartphone and for me, the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier is exceeding those expectations so far.
